This is the talkback thread for Live-Action "Death Note" Hitting Theaters in Two-Day Event (http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=23020).

With the Japanese films gardnering more attention one must wonder if whether or not an American company (espicially due to Warner Brothers having the rights to distribute in Japan) might want to try their hand at an adaptation. One that follows the comic a bit more closely, God willing.

Announcer: In a world that is plagued with money (cut to bank robbers) corruption (cut to politicians drinking) and crime (cut to bank robbers running away). Some wonder if they could change the very fabric of the world. (Zoom out of NYC) and then black screen...

Cut to a shadow of a computer animated Ryuk flying in the distance as audience sees a Death Note slowly fall to the ground.

Announcer: What if you actually could

While Death Note is falling you hear that Latin music they play during the show as footsteps are heard becoming extremely louder. As the Note hits the floor the music stops. You see Light (played by Shia LaBouef. Hey I think he could work) picking it up.

Light: Death...Note?

Generic Horror Rock Music plays (i would put "what's up people" playing here)

Rules of the Death Note fly on the screen while images from the movie play after each rule. For Example:

RULE I: THE PERSON WHO'S NAME IS WRITTEN IN THIS NOTE SHALL DIE
(scene of Light writing names)

RULE II: THIS NOTE WILL NOT TAKE EFFECT UNLESS THE WRITER HAS THE SUBJECT'S FACE IN THEIR MIND WHEN WRITING HIS/HER NAME
(scene of Light looking at photos of FBI agents and smirking

RULE III: IF THE CAUSE OF DEATH IS WRITTEN WITHIN 40 SECONDS OF WRITING THE SUBJECT'S NAME. IT WILL HAPPEN
(scene of Light looking at his watch, maybe say something like"Only 10 more seconds...)

RULE IV: IF THE CAUSE OF DEATH IS NOT SPECIFIED THE VICTIM WILL SIMPLY DIE OF A HEART ATTACK
(scenes of various criminals dying of heart attacks

RULE V: AFTER WRITING THE CAUSE OF DEATH, THE DETAILS OF THE DEATH SHOULD BE WRITTEN IN THE NEXT 6 MINUTES AND 40 SECONDS
(scene of Light writing a complicated plan in the Note)

Black screen again and cut music then...
Ryuk (same VA as anime)-Ha ha ha, you humans really are...interesting

Various scenes flash by extremely quickly the last one shows Light and L (not sure who would be good to play him) saying

"I AM JUSTICE"

Slowly Zoom out to see title first in Japanese then it reverses to say Death Note.

Last scene is Light tossing an apple to Ryuk and devilishly smiling

The world will change
(Insert date of Movie here)

Yeah, I'd like it if the trailer looked something like that.

Oh right, good news on the movie

God forbid they stick to the original setting and cultures like American comics' [films] do.

Knowing most limited releases, the closest to me will probably be in NYC, which is like an hour away.

Most American comics that get made into movies ARE AMERICAN in culture and setting anyway.

Interesting that they say Death Note gets over a million viewers in the PR. I wonder how well it would do on Toonami.

Good question. I would expect it does best with 12-17 given the manga sales and it's popularity among people in that age group. But the 9-14 ratings might not be that good even in a pre-11PM slot. I'm perfectly fine with it airing on Adult Swim but I do think it could manage better ratings on Toonami but not nearly what Bleach could.

One that follows the comic a bit more closely, God willing.I thought I heard mentions of WB doing a US version of Death Note last year back when the Japanese movies premiered.

Anyways, outside of the Note itself and the rules, and maybe Ryuk, there's really no need to directly adapt the manga for an American version. They can easily transfer the setting and have different characters without it being as big a problem as some other things I think. It would take a really good team to take it beyond a stupid teen horror flick though, so any movie would more than likely be awful given WB's hope for a quick cash grab if they make it.

Haven't a couple of those Japanese horror remakes kinda worked as semi-sequels to the originals? Certainly, I think you could do that with DN- starting with a brand new franchise in the US and continuing the existing one in Japan- with an American Kira dealing with Near and Mello or something.

Otherwise, I see this... [American, probably Caucasian] Light finds the DN. Early uses of it being stopping things like hostage situations. But he becomes a more active user after his father winds up in the hospital. Now, he's just killing murderers and is just as good at covering his tracks as in the original manga/anime. He has a close call here and there with investigators on his trail, but he's still at the point where he won't cross that line of killing them. That will soon change. L is determined to stop the killings at any cost. Light's father soon joins the Kira taskforce, making L aware of Light. And then there's Misa, here more of an equal and real love interest (possibly Latina). Light finds himself more and more open to kill investigators who get too close to catching her. And each time, Light finds it easier and easier to justify. And L gets more persistent and more convinced that Kira is evil- taking bigger chances like bringing Light in on the investigation.

I just don't think you can just bring in elements like Light killing FBI agents in cold-blood early on or stringing Misa along if you're making an American movie where he's the main character you're following. The only thing in the US I can think of where it's all about looking forward to the jerk getting what was coming to him/her is Tales From the Crypt.

Yeah, but that was two Saw movies too many.

I actually think a tightly directed adapation of DN would be a great movie or pair of movies as the case may warrant. It wouldn't have to deviate from the original story too much. Misa's stalker nature, the Gods of Death, they could all be played off rather faithfully and simply.

Honestly, I think the trailer Viz uses for the series, with some polishing, would work extremely well for theaters.

You only left out one thng to make this really "Hollywood": at some point in the trailer - perhaps when the criminals start keeling over - Rob Zombie's song, "Bodies" should come blasting over the soundtrack along with a flurry of headache-inducing jump-cut edits.

I'm not sure what it is about Hagerstown being the otaku capital in Maryland (aside from Otakon, much of anything geek-related has at least one location in Hagerstown), but it's annoying, mainly because it's too far away to drive from Baltimore. -_-

I'm still wondering why the hell these anime companies aren't getting into Muvico at Arundel Mills. I mean, they showed the 4th and 5th Pokémon movies!

Important question here - I'm watching the show on Adult Swim and they're I believe on episode 25. They will have shown up to episode 30 before this movie comes out. Do I need to see the entire show before I see this movie, or is there a cutoff point? Obviously I don't want the movie to spoil things yet to happen in the show.

Also, anyone know if it's subbed or dubbed?

The movies follow the series pretty faithfully for the first 20-something episodes/6 and a half manga volumes and then go off on a completely different tangent.

Since live-action dubs rarely work, I'd assume it's subbed.
