View Full Version : Why hasn't Pepe LePew been banned yet?

I don't understand why CN has such a PC heavy vendetta against Speedy Gonzalez, yet let Pepe LePew run around. Think about it. Pepe is:
A) A hairy Frenchman
B) A smelly Frenchman
C) A horny Frenchman
I think that would constitute as much a ban on Pepe as they have instituted on Speedy. Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't surrender at the drop of a hat that has kept him out of the lime-light.:D
A) A hairy Frenchman
Does Pepe Really count for this one, I mean, a bald scunk would be really pasty, naked, ugly, and wrinkly. I'd rather see a hairy Frenchman than a pasty, naked, ugly, wrinkly one....
You'd think they would get more worked up over Penelope, with the hairy european woman steriotype...

It just might all be coincidental. Why? Well, If you're a skunk, you can't help but be hairy. If you're a skunk, you can't help but smell. The horny part is just his personality. In all actuality, there are horny people in every culture. Heck, I'm horny right now, but you probably didn't want to know that.
About Speedy, someone told me that his wasn't banned, he was just out of the heavy rotation the other toons experience. Personally, I don't buy that story, but we all have our theories, right? I don't know why Speedy isn't shown that much. Hispanics can't possibly be offended by a mouse who is the OPPOSITE of all the Mexican stereotypes(you all know the ones). He should be a role model if anything. Pepe Le Pew could be looked at as the perfect model of how NOT to approach the opposite sex. French stereotype, I don't think so. Sorry.

Pepe isn't a French slur, he's a caracture of Charles Boyer's character from Algers.
:p
That's why he isn't banned.
Speedy is a generic Mexican mouse (but very very fast.)

LOL!
All your points are very true and by CN's standars Pepe is quite UN-PC.
Bring back Speedy!

I don't see why the French are stereotypes as being the most libidinous. I'm Scotch-Irish and quite the Lothario (my people are noted for being cheap buggers, and let's face it, I'm afraid I live up to that one--I'll pinch a penny till it bleeds). Granted I'm a bit more of a gentleman with a woman than Pepe....
A sex-crazed skunk? From what I've seen dogs are the most lustful of animals--just watch the males come a'runnin' when a female is in heat. Then again, there's something hypnotically seductive about cats too...it's something in their eyes and the way they walk....

You do have a point. Pepe is a skunk and can't help being hairy or smelly? Yes, every culture is horny. I'm glad Pepe Le Pew isn't banned because I enjoy those cartoons quite a bit. Also, there was a Speedy cartoon shown on Acme Hour one night. It was an early one (possibly his first) where he had a gold tooth. Kind of ironic since CN never shows any other Speedy cartoon.

I think that cartoon is CAT-TAILS FOR TWO, the only Speedy cartoon CN shows on somewhat of a regular basis, which is ironic since Speedy's has a more offensive appearance in that cartoon than his "cultural" Mexican look. I would figure that if any cartoon with Speedy in it would be played on a normal basis, it would be THE WILD CHASE since Speedy's rather tame in that one and doesn't have much focus on him.

Yep, you're right. I'd really like to see them show "The Pied Piper of Guadalupe" or "A Taste of Catnip" since those are the most tame. Boy, I wish I would've taped Nickelodeon, when they played Speedy to DEATH.....

Mainly, the reason why Speedy is banned and Pepe isn't is...
1) The US has a large hispanic population. If offended, hispanic population could cause problems. While this is unlikely, CN is run by wussies.
2) The US has a very small French population. If offended, they won't do diddly-squat.
3) No one really cares if the French are insulted. See the number of surrender jokes, unshaven French women jokes, etc. I don't hear many Hispanic jokes though.
I understand that Pepe is based on the Charles Boyer character, but the average person doesn't know that, and that wouldn't matter if points 2 and 3 were false.
"I don't hear many Hispanic jokes though."
I think this depends on where you live. Living in Houston I hear lots of racist Hispanic jokes.
I've had this conversation with more than one friend of Hispanic heritage. I've yet to find one offended by Speedy, although a couple said Slowpoke Rodriguez might be pushing it for the hypersensitive.

Is this getting ridiculous or what?
I just read this afternoon in Sports Illustrated that Colgate University is dropping the "Red" out of the "Red Raiders." According to them, officials originally referred to "red" as the school's uniform color, BUT became associated over the years with Native Americans and may "offend people in ways that undermine the institution's values and commitments."
Did anyone forget to tell these people that PC is NOT English?
By the way, Speedy is banned, someone wants Pepe banned; I mean...what's next? Porky because he stutters? Elmer because he can't pronounce correctly and sports a gun? Foghorn Leghorn because of his southern slang? Daffy and Sylvester because "they're black"?
I wrote a very angry editorial about this PC crap in cartoons...if anyone is interested in reading what I have written, please E-mail me and I will send you a copy.
For now, of course you know this means war...and we're still not winning it!

Well... TED TURNER was the man for taking "Speedy Gonzales" off of CN'S roster, he thought that the Hispanic comunity would get offended by Speedy.
I don't think that CN ever got any complaints from the Hispanic audience towards "The fastest mouse in all mexico", there has been many people trying their best to get Speedy back on CN, but several of his cartoons have popped up during late night viewing hours and in the early morning schedule.
There is no reason why Speedy can't be back on CN, none whatsoever, are his cartoons are offensive by any means, and it's a sad excuse for their (CN)decision, on this subject matter.

Geez, that IS rediculous! I'm fed up with all this PC s#!t too!

Don't forget Bugs. He's an un-PC New Yorker stereotype cause he talks with a Brooklyn accent and has a bad attitude. Donald Duck makes fun of people who can't speak intelligebly, Mickey Mouse is a bad role model cause he encourages kids to get high on helium. Goofy makes fun of stupid ("mentally disabled") people. Betty Boop is too risqué. We ain't left with much, folks.
(by the way, I'm being sarcastic.)

Nelson:
TED TURNER was the man for taking "Speedy Gonzales" off of CN'S roster [believing] that the Hispanic comunity would get offended by Speedy.
Yet this is the man who has called Christians fools, made insulting comments about the tradition of putting ashes on one's forehead on Ash Wednesday, and who has publicly supported the two-children-only laws of Communist China, saying if he'd had a brain when he was a younger man he wouldn't have fathered his other two or three kids. Yet Speedy concerns him. So he has no qualms about offending Christians, but he'll bend over backwards for Hispanics. Well, [expletive deleted] him, and [expletive deleted] that [expletive deleted] Hanoi Jane as well! [flatulates loudly in the direction of Atlanta and the Turner empire]

Previous characters who may as well be banned: Betty Boop (being too risque), Donald Duck (because he speaks unintelligibly), Goofy (caricature of a mentally retarded person), Mickey Mouse (encourages kids to get high off of helium)
What about Pluto? Couldn't he be offensive to dogs?
How about Woody Woodpecker? Don't you think that would be very offensive to all the woodpeckers out there?
What about Popeye? When he eats the spinach, it perks him up right away. Makes one wonder if there are certain drugs in it.
