View Full Version : Code Geass: Why Adult Swim?

I don't know a whole lot about this show, so I'm asking. Is it airing on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block by default, or does this show have something that wouldn't fly on Toonami? If it's the latter, is it because of the political elements (i.e., Japan losing its rights and freedom)? Is it so violent or...otherwise during critical series elements that no amount of editing will make it Toonami-worthy?

The show, from what I've seen, would probably be editable for Toonami if they gave it a TV-PGLV. But Code Geass isn't like, say, a Gundam series when it comes to subtlety. There's a LOT of brutal moments in the show.
So while it would be viable to air on Toonami, the money spent on the editing and possibly brushing over the more violent and shocking instances aren't probably worth it. It's fine where it's at.

In a time when Bakugan is airing on Toonami it just doesn't seem plausible for the awesomeness of Code Geass to run on the block but you can bet I'd love to see it there. Especially given it's being wasted at freak'n 1:30AM.
THIS ISN'T EUREKA SEVEN YOU IDIOTS! Every moment is enjoyable and should be enjoyed. Okay.. maybe not that 1 moment... that was just disturbing.

I don't know their reasons, but violence is the best reason. I don't think mass executions have ever been depicted on Toonami.

Yes that one episode... That would be a problem. But it's just one episode.

HAHAHAHAHA wow. it's clear you don't know much about this show. let's see if you feel the same way after the first episode.
i dont care what anyone says, Group Suicide is not Toonami material.

It's not just the amount of violence (although Code Geass certainly has its share), but the series also has a very complex and multi-layered story. And the characterization is extremely deep. It's just not material for juveniles.

So? We see Naruto jump off a cliff at the end of the intro.

I've only managed to catch a few episodes of the series, but from what I've seen, it would work great on Toonami, and add a lot of life to the block. I would prefer to see it on Toonami at TV-PG DV or something along those lines.(It would need more than a little editing, but would fit in great and probably still managed an awsome dub)
But right now I don't really care, the show would flop on both at this point.

buu?
Note I said mass executions, not mass murder. We're talking people dying to energy blasts mostly off screen with the viewer knowing they can be brought back to life by magic balls, as opposed to real world violence.
So? We see Naruto jump off a cliff at the end of the intro.
ARE YOU SERIOUS, That is no comparison.:raven:
in episode 1 a group of soldiers get their guns, put the guns up to their heads and then they blow their brains out, how is that anything like clip of Naruto simbolicaly jumping of a cliff in a song (where you dont see him die violently):raven:

Not to mention that there is a certain glasses-wearing character who has some (cough cough) "interesting" qualities
She kinda becomes a psycho lesbian and there is a scene of her doing something very innapropiate to herself. Oh and she threatens to blow up a school too.
I don't think she would fly with Toonami.

Let's keep discussion about what happens in certain episodes out of the thread. People who haven't seen the episodes before don't want to be spoiled on what happens.
Also, discussion about editable content should not be mentioned since the people from CN do come to these boards.

Can I just say that I imagine this is indeed for some of the violence other folks have mentioned. I wouldn't really say Geass has fantastically multi-layered characters. Most of them have secrets and issues but no more than most other shows. I hardly think the characters were the reason it went to AS. Fact is it was a daytime show in Japan then got shafted to late night and so the tone changed. There are some things early on that they could edit but without giving anything away a certain part of the story just couldn't work if you edit it.

Yeah, Naruto would survive that fall in his own show much less in DBZ or One Piece...
Code Geass could run on Toonami but nobody wants to edit stuff adequately these days. So it's either an over-edit for children or uncut perhaps even jazzed up for adults. Code Geass is an easier sell for the latter but I think the Naruto viewers would like it a lot. What with Lelouch and Suzuka feeling all too much like Naruto and Sasuke at times (but Lulu is even more screwed up than Sasuke which makes it more entertaining).
And it's honeslty hard to imagine Flash, D or TOM 4 promoting Code Geass. I'd love to see them try... but I'm okay with it going to Adult Swim as I was with Death Note. The only AS show I plead them to send to Toonami is Bleach but with ASA in the poor shape it is now I'd say Toonami may be a better home for all their remaining premieres as long as they aren't TV-MA (yes, play TV-14-V shows on Toonami at this point I don't think parents are going to make a stink about it). Or make a new 12-17 targeted block to run those shows in. It's getting to the point in which anime is danged if you do and danged if you don't.
But Code Geass is a great show that is both exciting and interesting. The right mix of action, drama and a dash of comedy. I believe it could do well on either Toonami or Adult Swim but 1:30AM on Saturday Adult Swim is pretty much a death sentance. The least they could do is put it between Bleach and Death Note rather than after both.
how would you edit Code Geass, "hey kids, come as watch as pepople dont bleed from fatal bullet holes, just goes to show you head shots are perfectly safe, go out and imitate the boy who died immitating Garra only use guns instead just like in Code Geass", it wouldnt work.
and for the last time, Naruto symbolicaly jumping of a bridge in a song where you dont see him die violently is nothing like:a group of guys shooting themselves in the head

They usually don't but The N targets 9-14 and 12-17 for their network.

Blame the FCC. Just look how heavily censored EVA was on cartoon network doing the giant robot week. Do you want code geass ruined? If they aired it uncensored then they would be fined by the FCC. If they censor it then it will ruin the show just like EVA was clearly ruined by the heavy censorship. This is why adult swim exist. Just like EVA, code geass will be ruined by censorship thanks to the bloody FCC if aired on toonami. However, adult swim will make code geass a success just like EVA was and I expect little censorship just like EVA.
I can't wait to see Code geass on adult swim. I've just finished watching it and its by far my new favorite anime. :anime: You just got to love such a complex character like Zero. ALL HAIL ZERO!

The FCC only regulates broadcast networks, not cable networks.

I agree. But it also deserves a better starting slot than freak'n 1:30AM on a Saturday night. And you know they will barely promote the premiere.. this is Adult Swim.

The dub, on paper, seems pretty strong to me (especially Mary McGlynn as Cornelia. That's casting win at its purest). Johnny Yong Bosch seems to be doing well as Lelouch if the trailer's any indication, so I have a lot of confidence in this dub.
You guys can't really think the show that shows mounds of bloody corpses of men, women, children, what have you like it was going out of style would work on Toonami, would you?
I mean, I know this argument comes up literally every time a new anime ends up on AS but come on. You would have to literally not have seen the show to think a Toonami edit would be anything but a total hatchet job.

Completely true. I think that if it was on Toonami, there would be as much editing to the show as there was for 4Kids' One Piece (albiet without the hilariously awful voices)
Also, table rape.

I'm not sure that seen with nina will even be shown on adult swim. It would be hilarious though if it were. Truely one of the most infamous scenes in anime history. :anime: Well, at least for an anime thats billed as mainstream it really pushes the envelope.

I think this thread has run its course. The show is airing on AS and probably won't go anywhere else.
