I saw the promos for the new Resident Evil movie last night. Apparently it's going to have a lot of that Matrix/Crouching Tiger type fighting. It looks pretty cool. Thoughts on this subject?

I went to IMDB to get plot summaries:
Resident Evil (the game):
"Something bizarre is happening in Raccoon City. People are being eaten with no clue why. S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team goes to investigate more on the situation in Raccoon Forest. The team is supposedly wiped out and S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team is sent in to find out what is going on. The team, comprised of Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, and Arnold Wesker, find strange mysterious goings on. They retreat into a huge mansion where the horror and terror begins. Throughout the game, truths about the problem in Raccoon City are revealed."
Resident Evil (the movie):
"A Virus has escaped in a secret facility called "The Hive" turning all researchers into hungry zombies and releasing there mutated Lab "Animals" that they were studying. The Government sends in an elite military task force lead by Alice (Jovovich) and Rain (Rodriguez) to contain the virus in three hours before it escapes and infects the rest of the world. But all there training couldn't have prepared them for what they were going to encounter..."
Hmm, anyone else think something got lost in the translation from game to movie?

Of course not. Hollywood always does faithful translations of books, series, and video games.

We all know that Hollywood always changes the storylines when their translating a game into a movie. This, however, is different.
This film is supposed to be a prequel, so that explains why the story is different. The director wanted this kind of story so he could do different things, so it would'nt be JUST like the game, which would make him explore new areas that the game didn't do, which I think is a prety smart move.
All the video game -------> movie translations have sucked, except one movie that is the best of them all, Mortal Kombat (just the first one). This was the only movie that succeeded with a good storyline, and good acting at the same time.
So, that explains the different storylines for the new RE movie. Well, I'm out! :)

Changing some things is ok, but changing the characters, location, the basic plot of the games (where did they get the idea to have a computer release the virus?), and basically everything besides the fact there are zombies and there's really no point in calling it Resident Evil besides the extra money the movie will bring in. They really could have tried a little harder to stick to the Resident Evil franchise, but something tells me I'm just expecting too much from movie studios.

BatKid- You thought the acting in Mortal Kombat was good? I agree its one of the few decent video game to movie translations, but I wouldn't consider the acting to be one of the strong suits.
On the subject of the movie, I expect it to suck. But that's just me.

I gotta admit, some of the acting really sucked..but there were a few good acting spots here and there. I might change my viewpoint though, since the last time I saw the movie was like 3 years ago...and it seemed like good acting at the time. So, I don't really know if it does have good acting. Maybe I should watch it again?

I totally agree with you. I think rather than repeat holleywood's horrible mistakes, I would have tried to be faithful to the game as possible(look how well Haryy Potter did, it apparently was an almost copy of the book). Is not as if majority of the people in the country have played RE 1, so they cant use the excuse that they wanted to give the audience something new. 4 years in the works should have been used better than this.

I think Tomb Raider was the best video game to movie translation. Mortal Kombat was more like a B movie.

Yeah, Mortal Kombat seemed more like something you'd see on MST3K. On the topic of video game to movie translations, I think that as long as the "philosophy" of the game is preserved, it's okay to use a new or different plotline. Who wants to see a movie where it's just one long "OMG, remember this!?". I am kinda disappointed that there won't be a Clare in this movie though, she rocks! Also, I always thought that CHuck Norris would have made a good Barry, besides being sorta similar in appearance, they both have about the same degree of acting ability.
