i saw it one time with a friend of mine..he has pretty much every anime under the sun...it was one of the most brutal, graphic anime's that i'd seen at that time..i'm not much of a fan so it's hard for me to compare...pretty cool storyline and all.. just have to be able to stomach alot of blood to enjoy it..i never got to see the live action version of it, but judging by the gueyver movie adaptions it probably didn't measure up...

There is an anime movie version and a couple of episodes of the TV series out.
It's pretty violent for an 80s anime. The storyline is pretty simplistic---some guy wanders through some wasteland searching for his woman, and beating up bad guy punks and helping helpless innocents on the way. It's kind of like a story of a violent messiah. (?) Not exactly high art there.
That said, it's fun in the right mood. It's a bit like the Road Warrior crossed with Bruce Lee. IMO, the movie is kinda crappy. It doesn't make much sense, even for a storyline that doesn't make much sense, and it's just a bunch of guys getting killed.
The TV series has some abominable animation, but it's a far better piece of schlock entertainment. Fleshed out, the TV series reminds me of Michael Moorcock's "Eternal Champion" series of fantasy novels.
There is also a live-action American movie version, but I wouldn't even bother.

Showtime has it. I don't get to see it at all because it isn't shown on the main Showtime channel. :(
