In your own opinion, what do you think is the worst, and the best, anime you've seen so far? And why?

Gundam for best, for its depth, and it's just plain cool! Um, okay don't kill me but (in my opinion) sailor moon is the worst, HA. :p

Hmm... 1 second please... ho yeah!

The Best: Blue Seed
The Worst Sailor Moon (me too)

The best (for me) would be, Rurouni Kenshin. I STRONGLY think if you haven't seen this, you need to at least once. There is also Yu Yu Hakusho, Robotech, and Mobile Suit Gundam too.

As for the worst, I would say Salior Moon, because it moves at a slower pace then even Dragonball Z. Lets also not forget Zoids, which annoyed me to no end.

umm, Fushigi Yugi was good. But (please, no one hurt me  ) I do enjoy dbz the most.
I think the worst was Ghost in the Shell (waaaaay too much gore for me) that or zoids (sorry, I just can't stand it for some reason)

For me, best would have to be Trigun. It has those Bebop comedy moments (though nothing can match Cowboy Funk) with a great serious story. It's better than Bebop for Wolfwood's cross and because it's a big change from all the space-like anime although it takes place in a remote planet, you really don't see any ships outside a flashback or when Vash is going back to the "ship that failed to crash".

Second place: Rurouni Kenshin. Love the series, but it was too long and has so much filler I just wanted to see the end of Trigun more.

Third place: Cowboy Bebop. Do I really need to say why?

DBZ fans don't highlight.
Last place (worst): Some people will hate me, but Dragon Ball (Z & GT) is the worst in my opinion. It just has no real plot other than some monster came to Earth to kill people. The music IS good, the vocal songs at least, but other than that we have a bunch of guys with very strong bodies who fight people because they want the challenge. Not that bad, but they're so overpowered and the series is so overrated I now hate it.

I'm tempted to vote Sailor Moon the best, just to spite all you slaggers here....no way is that the worst...no way is it worse than Dragon Ball Z, either... ;) :p

I'd say best would be, for me, Armored Trooper Votoms.

Worst would be Yugi-Oh. Definitely.

Best and worst are personal preferences, and will very from person to person. Sure there will be very popular animes out there, and there will be those that a lot of people hate.

That said, I don't believe in "the best anime ever!!!!", sure there are a bunch of series that I love for different reasons, but I don't think I'll ever agree that something is "the best anime ever".

I will, however, admit that there is one anime that I absolutely despise: Marmalade Boy. Good God I hate that show.

I haven't seen a lot of anime, but from what I have seen:
(no flames people, this is just my opinion, which has no meaning to anyone except me)
Best: Gundam Wing
I know that most people don't consider this the best gundam cartoon, but I do. The story line is very well constructed and interesting. It also has several messages about modern warfare that are very interesting. The animation is beautiful, better than I've seen in a lot of cartoons. The music is very good too. There isn't an aspect of this cartoon that I don't like, so I think its the best.

Worst:Sailor Moon
I have only watched this show for a short while when it was on CN, but thats all it took to earn my scorn. The humor wasn't funny, i never laughed once. The animation was nothing special, Serena had the most annoying voice I'd ever heard in a cartoon character, she made gilbert godfrey's voice sound like music. Speaking of music, the music annoyed me as well. The show seemed like an excuse to spend a lot of time and animation showing the scouts transform. The storyline seemed ridiculous. I watched this show for two weeks and still didn't get the plotline. One more thing: Two words: Tuxedo Mask. I like pokemon, I like DB/Z but I can't stand sailor moon.

Best: Evangelion, easy.

Worst: Man, there are a lot. I'm going to say "Dragon Half" a little 2-episode bit of pointlessness.

Leaping Larry Jojo
02-22-2002, 01:32 AM
Many fans say that "Dragon Half" was one of the funniest non-sequiters displayed in anime. (I don't remember much of it)

I can't believe some of the results here...I mean, I know people have got their own opinions, but there are several dozens of anime far worse than what's been listed here, and several dozens of anime far BETTER than what's listed here...of course, that's a matter of opinion, but I can't see how a poll like this doesn't include these:

Worst:

MD Geist---By far the worst piece of crap ever made. Consistently topped "worst anime" fan polls since 1995.

Gowcaizer--video game

X--embarrassing to release in theatres

The Professional (well, I don't mind this...but it's pretty bad)

Sword for Truth--Better off with Kenshin.

or Best:

Any Ghibli
Rose of Versailles
Captain Harlock 1970s
Zeta Gundam
Future Boy Conan
Heidi

CN's great and all, but I'd hate to think they represent the selection of anime available for these kind of polls...come on, folks, let's see some shows outside of Toonami...

Don't mind me. After seeing hundreds to thousands of anime dating back to the 70s over a 14 year period...you can imagine how many *really* bad titles I've seen. ;)

One of the lesser animes to me would be Cyber City Oedo 808and SailorMoon.

Fist of the North Star with Houto Man,Kenshin,Appleseed,Dragonball series which isn't so bad...some of Evangelion I seen and Cowboy Bebop,Inu Yasha,Baoh,Gunsmith Cats.
So far I liked those.

Trigun

The worst series:
Big O
Zoids Zero

Best:

Mazinger Z(My first anime, and my all time favorite, see my avatar)

Great Mazinger(sequel to above)

Mazinkaiser(A BRAND NEW OVA series from my favorite mecha :) !)

Evangelion(with the movies of course)

Saint Seiya(Will send the Ronin Warrior go cry for his mommy)

Saber Marionette J, J Again, and J to X(a cute android girl that
kicks butt :D)

Ghost in the Shell(It's so well done)

Getter Robo Armageddon(an Ova from the the very first combining mecha Voltron is a ripoff from this one)

Dragon Ball Z(Spanish version)I'm glad that Funimation does not have an office in Mexico :bosko: )

Dragon Ball GT(Wait till you see it! GO PAN!!!)

Worst:

Street Fighter Alpha(mediocre film)

Variable Geo(excelent character desings, fighgting sequences, characters, music, acting, but its so pervert  )

Dragon Ball Z(Funimation's version):Imagine if they ever dubbed Evangelion

For me the best are...

Dragonball seires... the story lines are so good that I can't wait for the next episode

Cowboy Beebop... later in the series (Love the music, especialy "Call Me Call Me" Got the MP3)
Bubblegum Crisis
Vampire Hunter D

Ones I hate...

Sailer Moon...I mean COME ON! Bad acting, animation, stories... the toon had to be cencored!
Pokemon... bad animation
Digimon... Pokemon ripoff!
All the ones on Fox Family

There are others but I can't remember the names!

Best -
El Hazard - The Wanderers, 2, the OVA's and The subplot they released.
X TV - It took me so long to grab these beauties. (I have to diagree with the guy up there calling this the worst, he obviously has NO idea. =P)
Ranma 1/2 - Gotta stick with the classics here.
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Excel Saga

Worst...
There really isn't anything I would ever categorize as bad anime cept this one really boring one about some gay guy who played basketball and the chicks drooled over him. The series was horrible.

My personal fave would be Escaflowne. Arguably the most developed characters in any 26 episode series, great animation, best anime soundtrack ever, enthralling storyline, good voices(from the japanese side, not english), and so on...
Second place would go to Cowboy Bebop which is essentially on the same level as Escaflowne but the fact that Escaflowne has no dull filler episodes and Bebop does knocks it to second place.
Third would go to the always interesting Serial Experiments Lain.

As for worst? DBZ. Nuff said. :p

Sadly most of us are limited to what we see on CN, Fox Family, or WB. I do get to see some anime outside of this. Being an anime fan is not cheap, so I don't get to see nearly as much as I'd like.

Best: Cowboy Bebop and Trigun

Worst: Flint the Time Detective. Hands down. :p

Best (some of them - I can't think of all of them right now):

Escaflowne
Trigun
Akachan to Boku
Slayers
Cardcaptor Sakura
Ranma 1/2
I'll Be An Angel

Worst:

Wedding Peach
Zoids
Flint The Time Detective
Big O - It's just Batman, anime-style!
Mon Colle Knights
Medabots - Well, it's not so bad, if I could just see it in Japanese I might like it a bit more. Except for maybe that one kid who sounds like a chain smoker :p
DBZ - Just stating my opinion, I just don't like this show. At all.

Here we go:

BEST:REVENGER-I dunno about you since it's a rare piece of anime but this is good stuff. It's about a washed-up super hero who is the shrimpiest guy ever! It's rare but I have to say that it's one of the greatest thing I've EVER SEEN!

2ND PLACE:FREEDOM-Another rare piece of anime.Only 2 episodes exist! It's NOT action-packed but more of a calm,sothing,patriotic anime

3RD PLACE:TENCHI-Ryoko is hot and NAKED in almost EVERY scene! YUM!!!

WORST:(Hint:It's Totally Crap!)TOTALLY SPIES-Totally CRAP is more like it!

Wow, everyone is so "new school" here you make me feel old. ;)

I was into anime when it first started to become trendy in mainstream America in the late eighties/early nineties, but eventually I saw so many bad ones that I became a casual viewer. I tend not to remember the ones I really didn' like.

#1) Akira - this film is what made adult anime poular in the U.S. It's the one everyone has seen, and it's still the best.

#2) Princess Mononoke - Studio Gibli puts out high quality work and this was the best.

#3) Cowboy Bebop - Thank you Adult Swim for giving me this show that I probably wouldn't have given a chance. There is so much style her that separates it from the rest. Worthwhile plots. Outstanding music.

Honerable mention goes to Ninja Scroll, an excellent, gimick based, martial arts adventure, Twilight of the Cockaroach, a creative and original concept, Dragonball, a cute, quirky and bizarre series, Neo-Tokyo, a film consisting of three short, sureal, segments, and for sheer childhood nostalgia, Voltron, Robotech, and Dragon Warrior.

I really couldn't remember any of the really bad ones I've seen on video, (there were many) but the worst would go to alot of the crap on Fox Kids, Digimon, Monkonie Warriors, Medabots, and don't get me started on what they've done to Transformers.

The Golden Raspberry Award (so bad it's good) goes to Mad Bull 34. If you ever need a really hard laugh, seek this out.

My vote for best anime would have to be the one show that got me watching anime in the first place...Space Cruiser Yamato..Star Blazers was good for an American version..but the original was the best. This was the first cartoon for me back in the early 80's when I was a kid that people actually died!

As for worst...God there are so many I wouldn't know where to start...

Start with any anime that has crazy looking people with weird hair, same stupid story line every episode, same tired scenes, and characters that just act plain stupid and their voices sound even more rediculous.

This new gen anime is a sorry attempted copycat of the classic stuff that just comes off looking cheap and rediculous.

Best:
Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun

So-So:

Zoids

Campy, Fanservice shows (AKA: glorious):
Amazing Nurse Nanako

Best:
Record of Lodoss War
Tenchi Muyo!
Inu-Yasha

Worst:
Sailor Moon
'X' the movie (Was there a plot to that???)

I couldn't figure out where to put DBZ. You see, that's the show that introduced me to anime. I definitely wouldn't say it's the best anymore. I haven't even watched it in a long time....But I don't want to say it's the worst either.

The best animes that I have seen so far:
Rurouni Kenshin (it's one of my absolute fav animes ever. It's just such an awesome series!)
Escaflowne (everything about this is just amazing, the story, the art, the music, everything)
Gundam (well, come on, it's Gundam!)

Now for worst, I'm not exactly sure if I have seen really really bd anime. Sailor Moon is weak compared to others, that's for sure, but it was the anime that got me started on anime, so I can't really boo hoo it too much. Big O always reminds me of a Batman rip-off. I have seen some of Dragon-Half, the first couple eps or so, and none of it really made sense, though it was amusing from time to time. I think I have yet to see the worst anime, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Same here, started in the mid 80s, and exposed to more through Cantonese rentals, friends, pen-pals, and of course, the ones released on DVD. And I'm not even that old at 23 (well, it's kinda old).

I'm forced to play the curmudgeonly old man when I see all the CN choices here. Though I do understand the lack of awareness outside of CN--anime is too expensive to come by if you don't have easy and cheap connections to it. ;)

Especially Sailor Moon *grumble* grumble* which at least deserves some respect *grumble* grumble* for having more of an influence on all the newer "hip" shows than they think. Evangelion, Card Captor Sakura, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cowboy Bebop (yes, you heard me), Escaflowne, and even Kenshin all owe something, directly or indirectly to Sailor Moon. I mean, I know it looks like a geeky girl's show (sadly true), but geez...a lot of the better anime shows---from their own creator's admission--used many modern themes, devices and characteristics from Sailor Moon. Okay, I'm done ranting now. RockitShipper may let you guys slam her beloved Pokemon 24/7, but I'm gonna put up at least some token defence for a show I respect and has done much more for anime than many suspect. (Even though I admit it's not the best)

Oh well. I guess I can understand Citizen Kane fans a bit more now. Younger audiences don't "get it" or don't think it's the best movie ever made (that's me), but I can see why so many filmmakers would defend it as it had a lot more influence on film in general than many other films before and after it.

Re: Dragon Half and other stuffs

Dragon Half was really about the most ridiculous bit of SD fanservice trash I ever saw. It's just two episodes of generic story crammed up with innuendo and a few gags. I'm one of the few who's glad more episodes were never made.

I'm guessing Rose of Versaille gets better than the handful of episodes I've seen, which have been mainly focused on Marie's little intrigues at court. I do like the distinctive visual style. Samurai Jack seems to have borrowed a few tricks from it.

I really wish I could find some of the older series like Heidi and Yamato and Harlock since I've heard so much about them.

Well, "Rose..." has a director change at around episode 23 or so, and it affected the show drastically. Set pieces became more melodramatic, and the plot went ahead full bore as the revolution came around (as you know from history). So things start "heating up" so to speak.

Yamato is available through Star Blazers. It isn't as hacked up as you'd think. The music is the same as the original, the edits were strictly done for censorship, and the dub is not too bad. The story is much more faithful to the original than newer dubs such as Sailor Moon, Robotech or Cardcaptors. I actually haven't seen all of it yet, so my opinion is still out there on it. But I see some elements of anime that would be developed further later on.

Heidi is like Kiki or Totoro, and Harlock was one of the more sophisticated "angst-fests" of its time.

My picks for best anime are:

1. Robotech - It was revolutionary in it's time. There had never been anything on like it when it debuted. An all time classic.

2. Transformers(Generation 1 through The Targetmasters Episodes) - Transformers was awesome!!! And the movie was awesome. Great animation for its time. They were just cool.

3. Dragon Ball Z - I know a lot of people don't like this series, but the fights are kick ass.

4. Gundam Wing - This series is so cool on so many levels. The heroes are screwed up and flawed. I dare anyone who has seen "Endless Waltz" to argue with me on this one.

5. Neon Genesis Evangelion - This is cool on the same lines as Gundam. It's just good

Now for the worst anime:

1. Pokemon - This show is so retarded it's not even funny. It blows.

2. Sailor Moon - All thing it did for anime here considered, and it DID go a long way in exposing anime to girls, it is by far the stupidest show I've ever seen. And I watched "Robots In Disguise".

3. Any Transformers with "Beasts" in it's name - Transformers fans DO NOT WANT TO SEE PRIME AS A FREAKING MONKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As much as "Robots In Disguise" sucks, at least Optimus is a truck. I could spew venom towards those shows for days, but I digress.

4. Mon Collie Knights - If you've seen it, you already know why it's on my list.

5. The Big O - I tried to watch it, but it bored me to sleep.

I'd also like to give special mentions to Ninja Scroll, Ghost In The Shell, and Yu Yu Hakusho. These are all fine anime. Check them out.

====

Gundam Wing
This show had it all. Wonderful story and plot line, great characters. This show made me more interested in anime. It has caused me to see other great anime series. I was amazed at how great of a show it truly is.

Rurouni Kenshin
Damn....It ranks up there with Gundam Wing. It is my favorite anime to date(Besides Gundam Wing). I love it so much. Character devolpment is well done, lots of action, and great moments.

Honorable Metion:

Cowboy Bebop
Inuyasha
Escaflowne

Worst:

Utena
One episode was enough to tell me how crappy it is. The music is hillarious.

DBZ
Overrated to HELL. So boring, and redundant. The fights aren't even that great. Characters..ugh. It could have potential, but it's pathetic at times. I don't like it.

Zoids
One word..."crap."

No, I hadn't seen 'X' the tv show. My old friend tried to explain everything to me and I can't say I understood it, but I agreed to watch the movie with her. All I remember from it is everyone died except Kamui(??). That kind of disappointed me. =\ What was the series or even the manga actually like? It's been so long since since I've talked to my old friend I can't remember...lol

Most of the comments in here concern the movie on its own, but I've seen a good chunk of the TV series and read three volumes of the manga. And I still think the movie was a mess. They tried to fit the entire story into two hours and it DIDN'T FIT! In order to get it into those two hours, they shortchanged everybody on character development, failed to adequately set up anything, threw out large chunks of story, and put the entire final showdown sequences on hyper-fast-forward. The long-awaited Subaru-Seishiro battle took, what, two minutes?

My biggest problem with the X movie, however, was the focus. My favorite bits of the storyline always involved the incidental and side characters like Satsuki, Nataku, Arashi, and Sorata. I never really liked the Kamui-Kotori-Fuuma business (a girl can really only take so much angst) and the Seeresses always drove me nuts. Of course the movie wound up putting the bulk of its time on the very elements I had the least interest in.

Damn. Well, so much for keeping my mouth shut. Oh well. It was a very pretty movie. I'll give it that.

My picks for the best anime are:
Tenchi Muyo!: My absolute favorite anime ever!

Cowboy Bebop: Great plot, great animation, great music

Gundam Wing: Awesome giant robots!

Tenchi Universe: Has most of the charm of the original series

Princess Mononoke: One of my favorite movies of all time.

Transformers: Come on! Do I really need to elaborate on this one?

Macron 1: Am I the only one who remembers this giant robot show? My introduction to anime!

Worst:
I haven't found a series that I hate. I can sit through an episode of any series I've seen without thinking "This is crap!" or the like.

Best- Mobile Fighter G Gundam ("My hand is shining, calling me to defeat you!") Gundam meets super robot. But trust me, it has a great plot and characters. Too bad for the dub they're changing alot of names (God Gundam to Burning Gundam, Devil Gundam to Dark Gundam, Gundam Spiegel to Shadow Gundam, Gundam Heaven's Sword to Raven Gundam. :( that's just a few of them)

Worst- Monster Rancher. How many boy trains monster animes do we need???

X the Movie

That's all off the top of my head.

Now, as for X the Movie, let me quickly explain why it made my list. While the animation quality was very good overall, I had no background in any of these characters. Nothing was really explained about the main characters enough that I would care what happened to them in the end, and that includes the young woman who was bait for our Hero/anti-Hero. The only character that affected me emotionally was a single supporting character, a young girl (name escapes me). It is an action movie, so the plot is kept simple as is to be expected (MI:2 is a great example of that) but without the charsima of the characters, it was like a Hong-Kong flick made with paper-doll cutouts imo.

Sorry Morgan, I tried to like it... :(

Best:

1.) Evangelion: A masterpiece. I have yet to encounter an anime series that has such brilliance and depth. It has the best twist ending ever. And Asuka kicks butt, big time ;)

2.) Utena: A gem. A grim fairytale that just gets better as it goes on. The movie was utterly breathtaking.

3.) Akira: an undisputed classic. KANEEEEDAAAAAAA!!!

Worst

Ugh...DBZ, Gundam Wing, half the Streamline Pictures video library, anything with "-Mon" in the title...the list goes on...

BTW, for anyone who hated the X movie, READ THE MANGA! The movie completely butchered the original story, they're almost completely different entities. The manga has everything the movie lacked: characterization, drama, suspense, angst, and an actually believable plot. It's worth a serious look.

LOL. I'm glad Akira is finally getting some props. For the longest time no one was mentioning it in this thread. It's really the one that started it all for us in the U.S. as aposed to Japan. Even in Japan it must have been considered one of the best to date at that point, I assume. It's like The Godfather of Anime.

Why'd you have to revive a 5-year-old thread for?

Man, what is with all the Sailor Moon hate? Yea it's corny, and can be really dumb at times, but I thought it's been consistantly entertaining for as many eps as I've seen (about thirty). No way is it anywhere close to "worst ever". Worst english adaption maybe...
As for this thread, I don't like to say anything is the "best" or "worst" ever because every show tries to accomplish something different. How could you compare, say something like "Fruits Baskets" to something like "Giant Robo"?
That said here are a few of my personal loves and hates (in no particular order).
Zeta Gundam: I realize this show is flawed, quite seriously in fact. But I still just love it. I can watch it over and over and it just doesn't get old. Incredibly entertaining.
Armored Trooper VOTOMS: Just like Z Gundam. Flawed, but just so damn entertaining! Great atmosphere, and some of the best Mech battles ever.
Slayers/Slayers Next: The first anime I ever bought on DVD, great characters, humor, and ever some nice epic drama from time to time.
Giant Robo:The definition of "Comic booky" in a good way. Incredibly over the top characters, battles, and melodrama, and it all works so perfectly. Fantastic art, music, and animation that rarely ever been matched.
Princess Tutu:I don't think I've ever seen a show that came together so well. It's just brilliant in every way.

Slayers Try:It just didn't have the magic of the first two. The animation (never the Slayers strong point) was just reprehensibly bad with characters off model and every shortcut in the book. Even worse than that I found most of the humor to be unbearably lame. I mean what in the blue blazes was up with that fish episode anyway? The story should have worked, but somehow just couldn't hold my interest at all. The new characters I did like quite a bit actually, to bad they were in this lame show. The exceptions are Valgaav's two sidekicks. Stupidest characters in Slayers history, and not in a funny way either! Kickass OP though:cool:
Garzey's Wing:Worst Tomino work ever (at least I really hope it is!) Manages to pack more mind numbing blandness into a mere three episodes than any twenty filler eps in any long running shonen show. Only worth watching to laugh at the lousy dub.
Magic Shopping Arcade Abinobashi:I know this one has its fans, and if you got some entertainment out of it I'm glad for you, but this has to be one of the most boring things I've seen. None of the jokes made me laugh ever, not even a little, even though I got all the references. Just gave up after two volumes and sold it off.
