Negima is a lot like Pani Poni Dash in some ways (or rather the other way around, since Negima came first): Too many characters to adequately write for.

Hence me wishing that some of the cast can be cut down by having most of the students compete in Battle Royale, with the survivors joining the following "non-competing" characters in the story:

-Sayo (for obvious reasons)
-Evangeline
-Negi's first four Ministra Magi (Asuna, Nodoka, Setsuna, and Konoka)

Ultimately, what should have happened is that an anime should NOT have been created until maybe about now. Xebec wanted to appeal to the otaku by making sure all the girls got a bit more of a role in the anime than maybe they had in the manga at that point. That wasn't a proper choice, I agree but you couldn't just say, "OK, most of you girls are completely out of here." That would REALLY anger manga fans.

However, Xebec's biggest problem (beyond the hideous animation issues that they had to spend extra money on to fix for the DVD release) is the adaptation itself. At that time, the 3-volume Kyoto Arc was the most intense thing to come out of the manga. Xebec compressed that down to 2 episodes in favor of crappy non-manga stories.

Akamatsu-sensei has shown he doesn't care that much about anime adaptations (though rumor has it that the animation problems for Negima! were a sore spot for him) getting it right, providing he gets paid. That is his right. Still, I wish that the franchise would get a complete reboot at some point in the future and do an ACCURATE adaptation of the manga story.

Two more solutions:

1. The show should have been longer than 26 episodes (face it, Negima can't be condensed to just 26 episodes if you're going to follow the manga).

2. The show should have gone the route that the SHAFT version did by ignoring most of the stories told during the first two volumes of the manga (which were basically done by Ken to make it seem like it was going to be another Love Hina), and instead focus on setting up the other main Pactios (or the Kyoto storyline) after the Evangeline storyline.

I disagree to a point. Negima is to manga what the Legion of Super Heroes is to American comics; a large part of its charm is the large cast, with a cast member for anyone's liking.

It is, however, a series that needs a lot of room to be played properly. Something a meager 26 episodes just can't provide.

If it did follow the manga, it could be about 80+ episodes in my view.
