So what's the most depressing piece of animation ever made?
I recently watched a movie called 'Grave of the Fireflies' that was pretty harrowing...
It was set during WW2 and dealt with two Japanese kids trying to survive on their own after their mother dies and their home is destroyed in a firebomb attack. They move into a little cave and needless to say... life turns out to be considerably harder than they thought. It was a great movie and it had a point but it was very, very sad.
Another really depressing animated movie I've seen was the UK production "When the Wind Blows".

Yeah, grave of the fireflies is pretty depressing. Comparitively speaking, I can't think of a more depressing one off the top of my head.

The concept of Titanic: The Animated Movie depresses me.

I would have to say Grave of the Fireflies too.....I think that's the only anime that I've seen that I've cried everytime I've seen it.

I never seen Grave of the Fireflies but I would say Plague Dogs which was written by the same author that did Watership Down.

I remember seeing Grave of the Fireflies a couple years back and it just about tore my heart out. Everytime I think of that movie I get really sad and depressed. It definetly was a depressing, yet very beautiful, animated film.

The ending to Charlotte's Web got me bawling, when I saw it as a kid. Still can't bring myself to sit through it again....

I thought Lain was just mind-boggling, I've never heard of it being depressing.
Grave of The Fireflies is the most depressing piece of animation. Period. You can't deny it. To think otherwise is impossible.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of things about Grave of the Fireflies (having not seen it myself). Neon Genesis Evangelion did become pretty depressing near the end of the series.

I may actually consider renting "Grave of the Fireflies" next time I'm in Blockbuster now...My family is into WWII so we might find it interesting to watch.
