View Full Version : What TV series should I buy next week?

Okay, here's the deal. Next week, I have minor surgery (I'll be fine, I'm sure...it's very low risk) and I'll be off work for 10 days. I recently just got my income tax return and while I do like to save and build a mild savings, I'm planning on taking $2-300 of it and splurging. I'm going to buy an entire TV series on DVD to watch as a mass marathon over the course of that time frame. I'll have to be on bed rest, so therefore, it seems a logical time to be impulsive if ever there was one. My question is, what TV series (3-5 seasons roughly) would you recommend that I buy? I've seen all of the Timm animated series, I have Simpsons, Seinfeld, 30 Rock, Nip-Tuck, and Arrested Development, and a few other obscure shows. Basically, I'm looking for a good show with consistent quality to enjoy during my time off.
Any recommendations?

Eh, it's more of a general question about television shows in general, not the DVDs. They just happen to be on the DVD format.
I tweaked the topic title to be more suitable for this forum. Also try reporting a post instead of posting in the thread. We get to them faster that way.

Any recommendations? If you want I'd recommend "MONK".In case you didn't know its a comedy-mystery show and Tony Shalhoub is amazing. The 1st 3seasons are good, the others are okay but the plots are really great and its a pretty smart show in its own respect. Also I'd recommend Frasier,Friends and "Everybody loves Raymond".Also I'd recommend "The Sopranos" and "Prison break" as they are really good shows especially Prison break.

I'd advise either Frasier and/or The Definitive Twilight Zone. You might to select the Zone because it's an anthology program that jumps all over the place. You might grow tired of seeing the same characters disc after disc after disc. Of course, I'm a Frasier-holic so I don't have that problem. Speedy recovery!

The West Wing - Caution: It doesn't appeal to everyone. Some call it enlightened, some call it elitist. I call it the best television series ever made. John Wells used seasons 5-7 to try and drag that opinion out of me, but even those episodes were decent. Seasons 1-2 were consistently genius while season 3-4 were still amazing, but slightly less genius. It's been dubbed "poetry set to film." I will supply proof if you PM me and I will defend this recommendation to the death.
Veronica Mars - People here on TZ highly recommended this show and I decided to pick it up based solely on what they told me. Turns out, they were right.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Arguably the best of the spinoffs. Seasons 1-2 are "meh," but the show kept getting better as it went on. If you're not a sci-fi person, skip it, but if you've had any prior Trek experience and are interested, this is not a bad purchase whatsoever. (Deep Space Nine is also a decent series, more character-based, arc-oriented and violent, for your consideration, but is only available on 7 individual sets for $100 each.)
MST3K - The show about people in space making fun of bad movies. Again, not everyone's cup of tea. And you can't get season sets, just box sets of four 2-hour episodes each. But if I was in bed for 10 days straight, I would devote at least 3 or 4 days to watching classic MST eps.

'Newsradio' is a pretty funny comedy that is pretty consistent throughout it's few seasons, it takes the sitcom format and pushes it as far as it goes with the craziness, if you like Seinfeld I'm pretty sure you'll like it. I would also recommend 'Titus' as a comedy about dysfunctional people that has been ripped off by everyone since it's third and last season aired, it's hard to compare it to anything because there isn't much like it.
That's my $0.02!

If you wanna piss yourself laughing, I recommend 'Scrubs' or 'Fresh Prince of Belair'. Otherwise if you want something of a miz of humour and drama (kinda depressing at times) I'd say Angel or Buffy. If you like annoying complex teen drama's the OC bar the last season is always enjoyable.
Relating the cartoons: Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, original TMNT and if you can wait til the 11th March, Sam & Max: Freelance Police

If you're not watching Lost now, you should. Seasons 1, 2, and 3 are currently on DVD. When your done with those, you can watch the currently airing season 4 (5 episodes have aired as of tonight) at ABC.com.
If you've never watched the show, your at the benefit of getting to watch all of these episodes at the same time.

Best Bang for your buck would be Seasons 1-6 of Scrubs, which is going for 120 at Best Buy until tomorrow.
I would recommend My Name is Earl and The Office too. Veronica Mars and 24 are also good options if you don't want a comedy.

I'll second those who recommended 24, Scrubs, and My Name is Earl.
I'll also toss in Battlestar Galactica, the current series. Season 1 and 2 are out on DVD, Season 3 will be out on March 18, and season 4 will start broadcasting sometime this year.
BSG and 24 are the kind of shows that, if you get into them, you won't want to do anything else until you've seen it all. You just keep popping in the discs. Sickeningly addictive.:p

If you like Simpsons, you'd probably also like Futurama.
Invader ZIM's really funny, but maybe not the type of thing you want to watch if you're not feeling well from the surgery.

And The Critic, but that seems to be a bit harder to find now.
Still, at least it has the whole series in one set.

I recommend Scrubs. Wholeheartedly.
GREAAAAT suggestion; I just so happen to have that series and forgot to mention it.
The sci-fi genre in it's purest sense (epic outer space adventures) never really appealed to me on any subjective level, so that rules out Star Trek: TNG, though it gets rave acclaim from any Star Trek fan I've ever met!
I have "The Office" and I was tempted by "My Name is Earl" but ultimately, I've decided to go with the following two selections:
1. TEEN TITANS-I do think I'm going to pick up Teen Titans at some point as I've not seen the majority of episodes and most people have, at least, respect for the series. I'm not sure that I'm going to do the Titans thing this coming week in marathon form, however. I'll catch up on the episodes on an individual basis to break up the monotony of watching an entire series straight through and prevent it from feeling stale. I also debated with Futurama for this purpose. Is going with Titans over Futurama a mistake? Speak up now and let me know; I'll be picking these up tomorrow!
2. CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM-Always seemed interesting to me and I've been thinking about giving it a shot for some time.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned HOUSE M.D. I'd thought about it as well...
THANKS FOR ALL OF THE FEEDBACK! It is appreciated!

Is going with Titans over Futurama a mistake? Speak up now and let me know; I'll be picking these up tomorrow! It is a whopping mistake, unless you have absolutely fallen in love with the Titans episodes you've already seen. Futurama has a better ratio of good:bad episodes than Titans does, IMO.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned HOUSE M.D. I'd thought about it as well...On a marathon basis, I don't recommend it because the formulaic nature of the show will become very apparent and you'll risk burn out. If you mix it up with another series, like you would with Titans/Futurama, you might be okay.

Personally I would have chosen Futurama over Titans. I've only seen clips of Titans but from what I know (I admit, it's little) Futurama is far better.

Dude, go with Futurama all the way. You can also pick up the DTV Bender's Big Score which takes place after the final episode of Futurama.

I wouldn't recommend buying 3-5 seasons at once of a show you've never seen before. You might realize halfway through the first season that you can't stand the show. I'd buy the first season, then buy more if you like it. So, what kind of show are you interested in? I noticed you listed mostly comedies, so I assume you're looking to buy a comedy?
1. TEEN TITANS-I do think I'm going to pick up Teen Titans at some point as I've not seen the majority of episodes and most people have, at least, respect for the series. Are you watching Teen Titans for comedy or action? While Teen Titans has a fair share of comedy episodes it also has a lot of more dramatic episodes. Futurama is more a straight up comedy, while it does still have the occasional dramatic moment. Personally, I always felt Futurama is somewhat overrated. I always hated how it was supposed to be set in the future yet they still rely on 90s pop culture references. Also, if you don't like sc-fi you might not care for Futurama's plot.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned HOUSE M.D. I'd thought about it as well...
I couldn't possibly imagine marathoning House. It's an okay show, but people mostly enjoy it for the main character. The plots are incredibly formulaic and I'd imagine they would seem even more so watching a whole season in one sitting.

Oh, and while all the recommendations were heeded and appreciated, I've ultimately decided to go with:
1. Curb Your Enthusiasm
2. ...and I'm going to give S.1 of Futurama a shot!
Thanks all!
