Coming up with this top 10 was rather difficult. There were enough shows to make a couple more best of lists and I don't think any less of them and there is a large amount of shows that didn't make the long list that I love. My list is pretty organic, so it might be different with each passing week. Still, these are the ones that I can watch over and over again and never tire.
I judge 2-parters separately. True, it may be one story, but the technical aspects can be drastically different from part to part. If one part is bad, from a craftsmanship point of view, I refuse to judge it on equal terms with the other part, provided it is of better quality.
Also, a great story and bad craftmanship doesn't cut it with me either. This is animation and the quality should be above average if one is to use the medium to tell a story. If it isn't, it should have been told in some other form. Why waste the time and resources, and MY time if the animation and voice acting is subpar. Story be darned.
Top:
-Appointment in Crime Alley
Loved the generalized nature of the whole thing. Basically, this is Bats on patrol, no super villain, no driving force. He's out there helping the citizenry. This is also one of my top 5 scores of the series.
-Robin's Reckoning Part 1 and 2
Yeah, cheated and included both parts(11 shows on list). They are equal and create one masterpiece. There is no difference in the quality of the two shows like so many of the other 2-parters. Tragic story, great score, some of the coolest animation ever on the small screen, esp. the flashback portions.
-Two-Face, Part 1
Great animation, tragic stuff. Adult oriented.
-POV
Liked the fractured structure. Another great score. The way the "boss" was kept in the background and not that big of a deal was tops with me. Some of the best animation in the series and liked the focus off of Batman.
-A Bullet for Bullock
The brilliant jazz score hands down. This is great stuff. The animation is great, too. Liked the fact that Batman isn't the focus and is treated as a secondary character.
-The Laughing Fish
The best Joker episode. Mindblowingly eerie score. Fantastic use of silohoette[sp?]. Weird, hazy-like visual to the thing. Joker at his most psychotic.
-It's Never Too Late
Great characters, no supervillains. Tragic, sad and uplifting at the same time.
-Read My Lips
Another jazzy score. Classy.
-Second Chance
More tragedy and awesome animation. Great use of Two-Face character. All human and no cartoony crap.
-Paging the Crime Doctor
Another non-super villain show. Liked the relationships between all the characters. Mobsters.
Bottom:
-Christmas with the Joker
The worst animation and voice acting of the series. Nobody gets it right. Screwy art and perspective. Stupid Joker robots, ridiculous dialogue, a Christmas Tree rocket. Just plain dumb.
-Joker's Favor
Ditto, though the acting and animation were only slightly better.
-Moon of the Wolf
Crap animation. Moe is in it. Terrible score. Major color shift problems.
-Cat Scratch Fever
Moe's back. More bad animation and plain ridiculous henchmen.
-Critters
No comment.
-I've Got a Batman in my Basement
More crap animation, that stupid vulture. I hate kids in anything.
-The Last Laugh
Horrid Mark Hamill delivery, as well as, Conroy. Bad animation and semi-annoying score.
-The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne
Batman swinging all the way around a mountain with a single grappling hook line pretty much spells it out. Putrid animation. Horrible waste of the villains.
-If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?
Putrid animation. Silly maze and more silly flying hand. Liked the ending and painted cels, though.
-Sins of the Father
Bad animation and waste of Two-Face. Gotta love it when somebody gets punched and they fly 30 feet backwards. Common occurance in TNBA.
-Cult of the Cat
Ridiculous giant cat. Bad animation.
-Beware the Creeper
The Three Stooges. Not funny. Bad animation. I'm so glad this guy wasn't a regular as originally intended.
