The constant advertising and promotion for Jumper was enough that audiences turned out to see it. I seriously suspect the negative buzz will kill Jumper next week, and it really does deserve it (horrible film).

I'm surprised Spiderwick didn't bomb like every other children's novel epic of the last six months. Of course, third place may be the best it will ever do but Golden Compass is jealous of those numbers.
Who sees breakdancing movies?
It'll be a good weekend to be a redneck next week, with Be Kind Rewind and Witless Protection both out. Yet I am not a redneck, I am smarter than a fifth-grader, and I'm not interested in Vantage Point either. I'll be staying home.

FINALLY!
I've been waiting to see this for such a long time. Hopefully it's as good as it looks.

Spiderwick has made less money than Golden Compass's opening weekend. Golden Compass was just more of a flop since it cost twice as much to make as Spiderwick.
I'm guessing that breakdancing movies are mostly seen as date movies. The Valentines Day opening kinda cements that.
How is Be Kind Rewind a redneck movie exactly? It's from a director of mostly arthouse fare, and if the early reviews are anything to go by, it's one of the best spoof movies made in a while (admittedly that's not saying much). When given the right roles, Jack Black can be very funny.

Will it? Negative buzz didn't kill Norbit and Ghost Rider this time last year. I almost wonder if at this time in the year people chose to go to crap movies to be rebellious against the Oscar nominees or something.

Ha, ha.:D Nice to see Hannah slip down to number nine. Looks like it doesn't have the staying power on the Top 5 after all.
Surprised that Step Up 2 wasn't number one. With all of the commercials, it should of had the power of being number one but I'm glad that it didn't.
Witless Protection seems to be Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector Part Deux to me. I love Larry the Cable Guy but sfter his two bombs of the past year with Health Inspector and Delta Farce, who's to say that his newest film will flop too. Maybe he should stick to straight-to-video movies. That would help his film career in the long run.

I agree, I don't understand what makes it a redneck film...
But it's not really the same type of spoof movie as 'Meet The Spartans', or even 'Walk Hard', so who really knows how the critics or audiences will respond, as they both had opposite reactions to those aforementioned films. Hopefully this'll be the one where everyone comes together.

How is Be Kind Rewind a redneck movie? From what I've seen and read so far, it's nothing like that.
And I guess kids are actually getting tired of Hannah Montana, well it had to happen anyway.
It'll be a good weekend to be a redneck next week, with Be Kind Rewind and Witless Protection both out. Ill be the fifth person to say this...how can a movie with Jack Black and Mos Def be considered a redneck movie? You couldnt even mistake it...

Call me crazy, but all of the upcoming movies look interesting.
It's nice to see Jumper top the box office. Unlike a lot of critics (including a hugely-uncalled for *1/2 rating in my local paper), I liked it.

Kind of a dull crop this week. Nothing that big, except for Jumper and Spiderwick, which don't seem to be huge. Great to see Juno kicking butt though. The little indie that could.

Really, I mean the movie looks weird and difficult to classify, but "redneck" is not a word that comes to mind. Jack Black's incessant riffing can get annoying, but when reigned in (School of Rock) he can be pretty funny.

Depends on a lot of things. There wasn't really much competition this week.

Yeah....I'll be the sixth.

Looks like swing and a miss for Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins, which debuted at #6. Just as well, the film didn't look all that good to me. Family reunions are a seriously overused cliche in movies centering on African-Americans, and I refuse to pay to see anything with Mo'Nique in it out of sheer principle. (IMO, Mo'Nique is the most successful unfunny comedian since Dane Cook). The only reason I'd ever even consider watching that movie would be for Joy Bryant, and based on the trailer I saw and the review I read on MSN.com, she was sorely wasted in that movie.

This is WHRJ's second weekend. It finished second to Fool's Gold last weekend.

Sad that the film isn't doing so well, it's really funny.
Jumper was good, so I'm glad it's #1.
As for next week, Vantage Point's clearly going to be #1. Be Kind Rewind looks creative and hilarious, so I hope it'll be in the top 3. Witless Protection should do moderate business for the Blue Collar fans, and Charlie Bartlett...well, I don't know about this one. Might get lost in the shuffle.
Seriously i dont know about you guys...but im checking this thread for Martianinvader's explaination of how Be Kind Rewind is a redneck movie...but thats just me lol (just kidding but not really).
But anyways..im really surpirsed Step Up 2 did that well. I mean the first movie had Channing Tatum when he was all rage but this one had like nobodies from what i can tell. Very surpirsing indeed...must of def been the whole Valentine Day working in its favor.
Be Kind, Rewind looks awesome. The fact that Jack Black is in it doesn't hurt, either.
On the other hand, Witless Protection looks horrible. The fact that Larry the Cable Guy is in it doesn't help, either.
Maybe I'm just blinded by my hatred for Larry the Cable Guy.

Step Up 2? I've never even heard of Step Up 1. All those "teenagers dancing" movies run together for me.

One of my roommates took his girlfriend to see Step Up 2: The Streets. We had a lot of fun teasing them for deciding to see a dancing movie. The best part was, we had this conversation with some dinner guests about the clever title. You have to admit, it is clever. "Step up to the streets." "Step Up 2: The Streets." So the rest of the night we kept calling it by its full name whenever it was mentioned, but we added a colon after the 2 to make the film sound important. So for the rest of my life whenever somebody mentions Step Up 2: The Streets, I have to say it exactly like that. Sounds like more of a gangster movie that way I think. Anyway, hopefully I will never have a reason to talk about Step Up 2: The Streets again.
Vantage Point and Be Kind Rewind are on my list, but I think I'll wait for rental on the latter. Or perhaps a matinée.

To be fair, though I didn't think the story wasn't as good as the first, I really thought the dancing was awesome, I wish I could dance like that.

VP looks interesting, and I like the casting. A couple of my friends are going this weekend, but I think I'll probably wait for the dvd. I was able to see the movies I really wanted to see over this last month, so I might take a break from the theater for a while. The next must-see for me will probably be TDK. I'm not saying that's the next time I'll be at the theater, but its a possibility.

Step Up 2 was directed by the son of the family that owns a Chinese restaurant near my home. Doesn't make me want to see the movie, but I thought it was interesting.
I saw Spiderwick, and it should've been number one, not Jumper (who goes to see a Hayden Christensen movie without the Star Wars license?). And hopefully Be Kind Rewind will be in a theater near me, as art houses are in short supply in Southern Oregon, apparently. Is it getting better distribution than The Science of Sleep?

'Cause the ads made it sound really really asinine, and the kind of lame thing only neanderthals would watch.
"When this one guy accidentally erased all the videos in the rental store, there was only one thing to do....film them all again!"
And not just buy more? WTH? This looks stupid.

It's supposed to be stupid. I mean, the fact this movie takes place in a world where Jack Black runs around magnetized and people still use VHS tapes makes it pretty clear that Goudry is consciously ignoring logic.

But then there's no movie.Absolutely.
The way the premise is reached is dumb. Stupid mistake coupled with flawed reasoning. But once the movie gets going and works with the plot itself, with these guys re-filming classic movies on no budget, is definitely going to be interesting.

I think I liked it better when 'Be Kind Rewind is a redneck movie' was just a really, really cryptic comment.
Besides, I think the first sentence would be much better suited to Funny Games. Seriously, who but a film critic is looking forward to seeing that?!

Genre fans. Seriously, I can see the marketing now: "MORE INTENSE THAT SAW!" Given the strong nature of the film, I'll be interested to see how the media treats it though....
