How long until 'Saw' runs into the ground. Every single year we get a new 'Saw' film. I must say it is getting old and the general public must agree seeing Saw IV was the lowest grossing Saw film to date. I understand they make money, but how long until they run out of ideas or do we see DTV Saw films. It is literally becoming the next 'Friday the 13th' or 'Nightmare on Elm Street' where we see 10 sequels, that aren't very memorable.

I believe I heard around here that Saw VI in 2009 is projected to be the final one.

Yeah, ever since the second one came out out there has been a final predicted number of six Saw films. The producers still have plenty of characters they want to introduce, and the story has yet to get wrapped up. Be thankful that an intelligent horror series that doesn't screw up its own continuity that isn't by George Romero is doing well, unlike say, Friday the 13th. And especially unlike Friday the 13th, the sequels are just as good as the original.

I've only seen bits and pieces of the first Saw (not much into the current torture-horror genre), but is there really much of a story to these films? Every ad for every movie looks exactly the same, so I don't see what the big deal is about this series, and it appears to be every bit as repetitive as the Friday the 13th movies. It seems like the only difference from one film to the next is new ways to torture and mutilate people.

Well, the stories in each sequel are different and they have new twists. But I'm curious to know how Saw VI will conclude the franchise.

Honestly, I have enjoyed every SAW thus far, they all are entertaining, and at the end I am literally going "WTF! OMG NO FREAKING WAY!" As long as they keep me with that mentality, I say bring them on.

There's going to be 6, they're filming 5 and 6 back to back. Tobin Bell's contract ends at 5, though, but I imagine 6 will still use snippets from previous movies (audio, visual) that Tobin has said or done to kind of tie it all together.

You'd be surprised, and I think a lot of people who saw Saw IV were surprised as well (one of the main complaints was how you had to know the previous movies to 'get' this one, which, c'mon, it's the 4th one, that's kind of obvious). There are a large amount of characters, each with their own backstory and problems, and quite a few go in and out of each 'episode' of the franchise, intertwining with other characters and other plots. Plots are full of twists, but they still manage to stay coherent and have a very keen eye with continuity, which other movies that went through the same sequel process did not and continue to suffer for to this day.
Even the same areas are connected: Saw took place in the same building Saw 2 did (it was a bathroom inside of a large abandoned complex), and Saw 3 continues to use Jigsaw's lair as his operating place, while Saw 4 takes place at the same time as Saw 3. People pass these movies off as 'torture porn' like Hostel, but honestly, it's very deep and complex when you give it a shot, which is what I like about it the most. I don't think any other movie franchise really cares about itself as much as Saw. So while the franchise may have peaked in box office gross with 3, I imagine the last one will still do well enough just when the money train comes to a stop. The movies are all filmed on small budgets anyway - no matter what happens it's still financial gain for Lionsgate.

Sounds as annoying-complex as some video games. "Okay, this game is Part Three, but the first half takes place during the middle of Part Two and the second half takes place before Part One."

SO well phrased :D!

I suppose but I feel that it really deepens the experience if you pay attention. It's not too hard to figure everything out, but a few weird scene transitions in 4 really kind of get things confusing for a few moments.

Saw should have ended with III, as that was the last good one. IV sucked, especially the nonsensical ending, and I have no doubt V and VI will as well. Hell, the guys who did the commentary to Saw IV even say straight up that IV was done just to make some extra money.
Seriously they should have stopped with the first one.

I generally despise the 'horror' genre as a whole, but I was pushed into watching the first Saw, and I was impressed, and liked part 2 nearly as much. I highly recommend both.
III was a disappointment to me, and when I heard there was IV and V on the board at the same time, I wrote the whole thing off as a money-grab. But hearing that there is actually a plan in place, I guess I'll give IV a chance. I suppose I'll have to rewatch III to do that, and maybe it will be one of those movies I appreciate more on repeat viewings.
'Movies you didn't like the first time that grew on you', or something like that. There's a topic for someone itching to start a thread.

Are you sure they weren't joking? In fact, as I recall, on the Saw III commentary Bousman said Saw IV is being Co-Directed by Rob Zombie and even though it was a joke, you really believed that.

Their not really annoyingly complex. The twists that have happened in all of the movies up to this point do take some thought, but the twists aren't anything that are nonsensical. Also while all the movies are connected, it's not hard to follow them either. A friend of mine who hadn't seen any of the Saw movies went to see Saw 4 and was able to follow it again proving that their not to complex for their own good.

after the 2nd movie the guy who plays Jigsaw signed on for 5 more movies....so there will be at least 7 with Jigsaw.
i personally like the series...but 7 of em is kinda running it into the ground

Probably because I don't follow commentary all that thorough, however, the comment about it being made for money was according to various sites that have reviewed the disc, all stating that is what they said in the commentary, so I do not know if they were joking or not, but hey, it does sound quite accurate as IV was a big let down.

You are saying Saw has something new every movie...when really it is quite cliche, they are just sticking new characters into the same situation that we've seen in the past 4 movies. If anything it appears lazy.

But there's always something new in each film.

Franchises like that are just one of those things. Fans of the various slasher franchises probably know which films they think are better than other just like Trekkies have certain episodes/films that they prefer, as do kaiju eiga fans, etc.

I disagree.
If Saw II had 3 guys stuck in a bathroom trying to get out, and III had 6 in a bathroom, and IV had 9, that would be cliche. Cliche is what ever Freddy, Jason, Chucky, and Michael sequel is. Each Saw movie has been almost completely different.
