After starring in what is considered this year's Battlefield Earth, Glitter star Mariah Carey is giving the big screen another chance...twice. The Hollywood Reporter says that after receiving a string of favorable reviews for her starring turn in the Sundance Film Festival selection "Wisegirls," Mariah Carey is set to reteam with the film's producer for her next acting job, the indie drama "Sweet Science."
Carey will star in the project as a determined boxing manager who drafts an unknown female boxer to make a name for them both.
Gary Goldman ("Total Recall"), Stan Seidel ("One Night at McCool's") and Rick Angres penned the screenplay.
"Wisegirls" producer will produce through his Leading Pictures along with Meg Liberman and Cami Patton. Producers are eyeing a summer start for "Science."
Plucked as a special screening for Sundance last month, "Wisegirls" is scheduled for release this year from Lions Gate Films. In the David Anspaugh-directed film, Carey stars alongside Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters as Rachel, a sassy-yet-sensitive waitress who works in a restaurant run by the mob.
Wow...two box office champs right there...

Wait, Mariah Carey actually agreed to star in the second half/sequel to Battlefield Earth. Did she even pay attention to how badly the first movie bombed at the box-office?
And here I thought she was out to help her career. :D

Oh know...I meant Battlefeild: Earth as a comparison to the original. "B:E" is basically what you compare bad movies to know, or the worst movie of the respective year. "B:E" was the worst movie of 2000. Glitter was the worst movie of 2001. There is no sequel for B:E...yet...

Can't she stick to the singing thing? The only singer I have really enjoyed acting was Bowie and that was for his hammy cheekiness in Labyrinth.
Surely movies should be about movies and to keep us spellbound we should have actors we don't associate to closely to something else - it breaks the suspension of disbelief.
Besides, are they trying to tell me out of all actors who auditioned that she was fortuanately perfect for the part? I doubt it. I smell the dirty rake of publicity scratching against Hollywoods cobbles..

It's just that there is a sequel coming and when I saw "this year's B:E" I just assumed that the sequel to one of the worst films ever made was coming out sooner than I expected.
At any rate her new movie doesn't sound like it's going to impress me. Unless it gets great reviews I'll still probably wait until it's on video before I check it out.

Hmmmmmmmmmm......
Usually i can at least see greed and money as the causes for execs to do something, no matter how stupid they seem to us. But this... this just makes no sense at all!

HER giving movies a second chance?! Gah, and all this time I thought she was part of the problem. I could've sworn it should be us giving her a second chance which I doubt anyone really wants to do...

Didn't they already do the whole "determined girl boxer" thing in the movie Girlfight?
Then again, cribbed ideas abound in Hollywood in general, not just with our lovely looney.

I read the premise of "Sweet Science" out loud so that my roommate could hear. He was talking on the phone, and after reading it he dropped it and laughed for about 5 minutes, snorting and all. Oh man, it was funny.
So, Carey in a new movie? She should try to do the soundtrack, she'll make plenty of $$ when the company tries to get rid of her.

Mariah Carey's going to do some more movies? Good for her!
You guys (and gals) are being tough on her. This reminds me of the "Crossroads" thread where everyone went after Britney Spears. C'mon! They're people just like everyone else, trying to earn a living. Sure, they earn a lot more money than we do, but they earn it a lot less often. That's just the way the free market works.
I give her credit for trying again, especially after "Glitter" turned out to be such a terrible movie. I'm not a Mariah Carey fan or anything, but I don't have anything against her, either. :)
Besides, acting is like any other profession. They have schools for it, and it takes practice to get good at it. Of course, like everything else in life, from welding to professional sports, there will be people that have a natural talent and go far quickly, but for everyone else, they have to work at it. Mariah Carey want to be an actor, and she's working at it.
Don't be a player-hater! :D

My problem with this is, as they're giving roles to pop stars who shouldn't touch movies with a 50 mile pole, some great young actor/actress who's "trained" their whole life is getting overlooked, because of their lack of name value.

And yet movie studios will gladly pass up credible writing or decent acting in favor of big names, because that's what gets asses in the seats. It's a depressing process.

Which is why the whole Batman movie franchise (among countless of others) has been utter crap.
