With the Superbowl just around the corner, talk about how the Patriots began their dynasty in 2001, and here in New York talking about past New York Cinderella teams. And the New York / Boston rivalory.
This thought occured to me, but the 1996 Yankees and the 2001 Patriots were both Cinderella teams, and the both became dynasty. That is kind of unusual, but the United States began as a Cinderella country and became a world power, so it is apporpriate these two franchises with american symbolism in their names, follow that tradition.
Anyway there are sort of Cinderella teams, but only for the championship round. I don't think it was crazy to think the Patriots would win the AFC and the Yankees would win the AL. I remember in 96 the Yankees dominated the season series with the only two AL powerhouses that year the Indians and Orioles.
Both teams got gifts along the way, the Jeffrey Mayer play and the tuck rule play.
In the championship round the 01 Rams and 96 Braves were both suppose to be unbeatable. Both teams pulled off great upsets and became dynastys in later seasons.
I consider the 96 Yankkes, and the 98 - 00 Yankees has two different types of teams. Same thing with the 01 Patriots and the 03 - present Patriots.
I guess the two cities have something in common.
