The awesome Comic Newsarama website recently had a chance to talk to Birds of Prey cover artist Phil Noto about his comic work, as well as some of his other work. Below is an excerpt:

PN: I was crazy about comics between 1st and 3rd grade. Devil Dinosaur was the first comic I bought. I just remember being freaked out by Jack Kirby's art. Everything seemed creepy but cool. Micronauts and The Avengers soon became my favorites. Then Star Wars kind of took over all my drawing inspiration and I didn't read any more comics until Dark Knight Returns. I 'd pick up something here and there afterwards, but the Batman/Judge Dredd crossover, Judgment on Gotham and Gen 13 were the books that blew me away and got me back into comics full force.

NRAMA: And the covers have been your first comics work, right?

All the pieces on my website are ones I did for fun, commission pieces or old ebay sales.

NRAMA: Of the major companies, it could be seen that DC is the most open to new and different art styles on their flagship books, and that you could have a place there. Did you approach DC, or did they come after you?

PN: Mark Chiarello , art director for DC, saw my website through Shane Glines' link page and emailed me about doing some covers for them.
