Okay now this is probably one of the strangest questions out here in the cafe but I have been curious lately and wanted to see what others would say about this.
Pretend you are diagnosed with an illness and the doctor tells you there are two options for you to get better, but these options will leave you with either being blind or being deaf for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?
For me I would choose blindness because if I chose to become deaf then I would never be able to hear my favorite song playing on the radio that makes you sing to it and gives you a good vibe. Plus you wouldn't be able to hear birds singing or the sound of a river flowing while going on a hike. On the plus side though, won't hear anyone nag at you.
But I would still choose blindness even if it meant having someone help me for the rest of my life.
What would you guys choose.
And horray 2,000th post.

It goes without saying that losing either would suck, and would be quite an adjustment.
That said, I think I'd rather be deaf than blind. I just can't imagine going through my life without being able to experience the wonder that is sight. I admire anyone who goes through life blind- that must be quite a challenge just getting around, even with help.

I like my eyes too much, so ill go with deaf.
Hey, i gotta look at girls, cant imagine not seeing girls.;)
As for music, wasnt Beethoven deaf yet made some awesome music? I still think you can be deaf and hear music, in your head that is...

well I like listening to music and I like watching tv/dvds
if i lose sight I can't see what I'm watching (among other things) and if I lose sound I can't hear nothing
this is my catch 22, so I'll pick mute!!! That's not something I use very often anyways and if a carry around paper and a pencil problem solved!
(yep, i answered with a "pick your own diagnosis")

I'll stick with going deaf. For some reason, if I am not mistaken, its easier to regain hearing than it is sight.

Well, my eyesight is pretty bad as it is, but I think I'd rather go deaf.
You could still feel the vibrations of the sound.

For practical reasons, I'd rather go deaf than blind because I'm an artist, and I need my sight. Of course, I'm a dancer by hobby, so not hearing music would be a bummer... then again, there was that deaf girl in my modern dance class who dances just fine w/o hearing music...

I'd rather be deaf than blind. I love to see things and look at things and know people and still smiling back at me. I can learn sign language to communicate, but I can learn how to use a new pair of eyes I don't have. Plus if I was blind I'd feel completely helpless and lost all the time.

Well, hearing would make the world seem more alive. Then again...I love seeing more then hearing.
But then, being blind would teach you to use your other senses. You could still talk with people but it might be awkward.

I think that I would rather be deaf, even though I can't hear music but I can still come to TZ:)

This is a difficult question but I guess I'd go with deaf. I just couldn't imagine going through life without being able to see. Being deaf, you can still watch TV with closed captioning. And as much as I would miss being able to hear music and the voices of my loved ones, I'd rather be able to see my way around, I think.

Blind.
My girlfriend worked at one of those relay companies for 2 years and a lot of the deaf people she interacted with over the relay were extremely rude to her.

Deaf. I'd miss sound so much, but I could still function with sight.

I'd rather be deaf, because I prefer seeing things over hearing. At least I'd be more easily aware if I was deaf over blind and could still see, especially with sign language, close captioning, signs, etc.
If I were to go blind, I could not do any of my animation work.
If I were to go deaf... It would make it hard-- but not impossible, to do my animation work (concerning lip-synch and dialogue timing.) I would however, be able to visually time my animation to visible wavelength beats in the timeline (where I key frames and synch to sound files).
While being deaf would also mean never getting to hear my favorite musical artist again (see icon, hehe), I could still go to his concerts and see him, and enjoy the show that way.
Out of the two... i'd rather be deaf.

I think you forgot the third impairment here, Dumb? Being unable to speak? But if I had to choose between sight and hearing I would probably choose sight over hearing.

I'd go with keeping my sight, otherwise all the money spent on my comics would be worthless (in the emotional sense).
Blind no question about it, I love music and would easily sacrifice sight or any other senses before it. Easy choice, I can't live without music.

Being deaf, I guess. I can't imagine a life without seeing things.

Deaf, could still play video games and watch closed captioned/ subbed movies. Could get places easier also.

Deaf. I love to read, and well there's sex also.

Deaf. I love to read, and well there's sex also.
Sex with nothing but sound and touch actually sounds rather kinky, imho. But I'd choose deaf. I love music, but I'd prefer to see my way around. Then, of course, there is the drooling over pretty girls thing :p

There are so many nice things to see (beautiful days, beautiful women), and I could still read and watch movies and televion shows with subtitles and closed captions so it wouldn't be too bad.
...the only bad thing is loosing music.
Of course, if I went blind I could emulate Zatoichi.

Deaf. If I couldn't see to write, or be able to enjoy a sunset, or even be able to see where I am, I would be terrified.

Deaf. I don't even listen to music to be honest. I just couldn't get around without being able to see.

Since I'm a cartoonist, I'd definitely rather be deaf than blind.

Well here's one for the Deaf/Blind commentary:
Related Link(s): http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22949721/
Here's the story of a 92 year old man who's a golfer and who suffers from Macular degeneration (a form of blindness.) this guy can't see the pin, or even know where he's shooting and he has to have someone help line up the shot.
But then this happens. and it shows one thing..
Blind people can do anything they want.. even draw/color art..
After all I would rather be (legally) blind rather than totally blind or deaf (oh wait I forgot, I'm already Legally blind.. Can't drive a car.. But if a 92 year old man can sink a hole in one on a golf course, that doesn't mean I can't do other things too. Like fly a flight simulator or pilot a train. that's what makes everyone different.. Even if we can't do things in real life, there's always options..
that's the way I view this debate.. in a different light so to speak.
But that's just my thoughts on this one.
