View Full Version : Soul Calibur IV Talkback Thread (Spoilers)

I know that's there's a thread for it but, it seems it's just talking about Vader and Yoda... so, if there's a issue with that, my B or feel free to make additions, amends, etc.
*ahem*
Confirmed:
Ivy
Taki
Mitsurugi
Raphael
Vader (PS3) *new*
Yoda (360) *new*
Maxi
Seung Mi-na
Yun-seong
Hilde *new*
Yoshimitsu
Sigfried
Sophitia
Cassandra
Astharoth
Tira
Voldo
Nightmare
Lizardman
Kilik
Xianghua
Fia Angol *new*
Scheherazade *new*
Zasalamel
Cervantes
Amy
Talim
Rock
Yoshimitsu
Shura *new*
Ashlotte *new*
Starkiller *new*
Kamikirimusi *new*
Algol Fear *new*
New screens came out, confirming Maxi, Seung Mi-na, and Yun-seong. I'm surprised that Seung's design hasn't changed much which is GOOD -- to counter some of the other women-folk designs. Gives me hope for Talim, that's for sure. Maxi looks the same, looking like Elvis [not that it's a bad thing]
Yun-seong?
What happened to the adorable red haired guy I know? He looks like a *mean* pirate now. or a roided Kaoru Kaido... :(
Thoughts?

I'm hoping everyone from III comes back. Given the apparent polish of the game and the potentially epic events that will occur this time, the roster should be as close to a who's who of Soul Calibur as possible.

I'll be all over this game at release time. But I have to say...
Vader and Yoda are definitely welcome additions to the game. And online play = big bonus. But if there's no Lizardman (my favorite character in this entire series), then I will be most displeased.
...very displeased, indeed.

Alright, three more confirmed -- Xianghua, Lizardman [YAY], and Kilik [DOUBLE YAY].
I think for the most part everyone from SC3 will return... it looks like it takes place a few years after the last game, because everyone looks slightly older. In Lizardman's case, he looks like a different creature.

Screenshots and artwork are at IGN (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/739/739576/imgs_1.html) and Gamestop (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/soulcaliburiv/images.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=tabs&tag=tabs;images).
Yes, Lizardman is in, and looking very good. He's never had much of a background story, but he gets a different lizard form for each game, and I like that.
I'm still a fan of his 2P costumes from the original Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur III. But I think his Soul Calibur IV look is the best yet. I'm looking forward to seeing his second costume.

I may be in the minority, but I feel the extra details on almost everyone's faces breaks the suspension of disbelief for me. Practically everyone's faces except Sophitia and Maxi give me this really weird vibe.

Two new *female* fighters revealed:
Fia Angol (http://kotaku.com/assets/resources/2008/03/sciv-1.jpg) -- a... you know what, I have no idea what she's wielding but she's designed by Keroro Gensou's mangaka and Scheherazade (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/46/Scheherazade.jpg) -- a left handed rapier-est who looks like (and probably) a elf. Rival or connection to Raphael?

Scheherazade remind me of Zelda for some reason. Fia Angol look cool even though she has nipples blades.
And it figures, new weapons that make no sense. I keep wondering if they'd ever have someone using kali sticks or a three-pronged staff, or maybe that blade from Master of the Flying Guillotine. There's a lot of real weapons that they don't need to make them up.

As for her personality, if this is based on the Angols from Sgt. Keroro, then I have a feeling that she's a being who is sent to destroy the Earth, with her staff being the weapon she uses to destroy it.

Release date and details about a collector's edition
Along with the date announcement, Namco Bandai also spilled all the details on the limited Premium edition package. Those who just have to have the nicest version possible of their games will be looking to lay down $79.99 for this tin-boxed version of the game, which will include a Soul Calibur t-shirt, a coffee table art book, and some sort of exclusive downloadable content. The Premium edition will also hit store shelves on July 29.I had a feeling the release date would be changed. It was originally set for June 24, which is less than two weeks after the release of Metal Gear Solid 4.
I had to pre-order the LE version. The artbook sealed the deal.
The 'exclusive downloadable content' likely won't be exclusive for long after the release, especially if it can affect online play. The T-shirt, well...

Either this is a joke or your priorities are way outa whack.
The fact that they were trying to sell this game on the breast factor, then go and censor that, shows that their priorities are out of whack. If you're going to turn a somewhat respected fighting game franchise into the next Dead ort Alive, fine, but either go all the way or go home.
For the record, I never bought a DoA game for the simple reason that the "lol bewbies" stuff always seemed to take precedence over making a playable fighter. Soul Calibur seems to be going in a similar direction, but can't even make the full commitment.
kenjisalk
05-17-2008, 11:41 AM
I don't see where you're getting that, since Soul Calibur is both a more technically complex and meaty fighter versus DoA's grapple/throw fest, plus all the different gameplay modes, options, and features of recent Soul Caliburs (not to mention the array of respectable and unique fighters, both male and female, and a much more thought-out fictional world), I think you're grasping at straws.
Having a few female characters who are relatively slutted out does not mean it puts an emphasis on **** over gameplay (if the game featured mostly tricked out harem with cardboard personalities and backgrounds, you would have a point, but that's simply not the case).
If so, then just about every fighting game would qualify.

Uh, guys, just to note... so far, Hilde is the only REAL new character. The rest are just Vader, Yoda, and Bonus Characters. Remember all those bonus characters from SCIII? Valeria? Luna? Chester? Greed? Miser? Just generic little add-ons that didn't have a unique fighting style, or a unique anything other than body frame or a few little do-dads.
And out of those bonus characters, as far as we know, only Amy has become a full-fledged character (ignoring all of those old characters, like Li Long, who were brought back). So most of them will probably be gone for SoulCalibur V.
But I admit, the woman-folk are becoming a tad excessive. I want some new guys who aren't little green gremlins or in space suits...

Sigh, I've had this silly realism argument before. Yes, SC's motif was escapist fantasy, that's what it was, no one denies it. It was like that ever since a knight like Siegfried and a greek warrior like Sophitia (never mind a greek woman warrior, which didn't exist) and a samurai like Mitsurugi co-existed at exactly the same time. Tell us something we don't know. Fanboys had at me for saying it before, but bringing in futuristic sci-fi does mess up what logic there was. Starships usually don't fit with magic swords. It doesn't belong, and that its only there for marketing is further proven by the presence of Vader's apprentice. Its now gone beyond playing to nostalgia to the area of sheer commercialism and product placement.
SC IV may be great, but its looking like SC III is going to be the last SC game that understood what it was.

It's really only Ivy and Sophitia who are ridiculously over the top, and even then their in-game models don't look quite as stupid as their character artwork, which I believe is going to be modified for the North American release anyway. Heck, they could've tweaked their in-game designs slightly in order to secure the T rating, which I wouldn't really mind.
The game is teetering a bit close to being an overblown mess. Right now they have enough bonus characters to make an entirely separate game! It would be kind of nice if there was a "take this game at least somewhat seriously" mode where you only play as the main SC cast, Ivy's bust size is reduced, and Sophitia wears a bra of some kind. But whatever - I'm still looking forward to it.

This game has dropped from a must-have to a rental at best for me. I just can't get behind all these Star Wars characters-if they had just kept Darth Vader it would have been cool, but adding Yoda is jsut strange and Star Killer? Sheesh. Granted, if it turns out that there's some great fighting, a decent story that doesn't requite hours of reading text boxes, and solid online play, my opinion could change. But so far, this game is just spiraling further and further down into ridiculousness.
If that rumor is true, does that means that 360 will get Marcus Fenix from Gears of War or maybe Master Chief?Well, DOA4 already had Master Chief(ok, it wasn't him exactly, but it was a seven foot tall Spartan so close enough) and it actually made sense as to why he was in there. Though if you could play as Marcus and use a Chainsaw like a sword then that would be beyond awesome, but there's no way that's happening.
I guess only the odd numbered Soul Calibur's make sense. 2 had guest star syndrome, 3 made sense, and 4 has guest star syndrome again.
I blamed Todd MacFarlane for the idiocy of 2. Apparently my blame was misplaced. It's Namco.

And yeah, having the Star Wars have such prominence on the cover is lame, but I don't see how it makes the game itself any worse than it would have been otherwise. You can just imagine the characters are not there if that'll help you.

There actually was a Spawn game released by Namco a few months after SC2, and Namco always likes to promote Tekken, so go fig.

lol, I don't even remember a last-gen Spawn game. I remember the Todd Macfarlane medieval one, but nothing with Spawn in it.
Not that I'm surprised, since obviously it gets units moving. But it isn't like the SC series is shallow outside of that, so it doesn't bother me personally.

Soul Calibur III was a Greatest Hits title, so it couldn't have sold -too- badly without Link or another "celebrity" character. Maybe not up to SCII's standards, but like Beat said, it also wasn't on three major consoles that time.

So I picked up the game today before work and just now got around to playing. First thing I did(besides get an achievement for simply turning on the game, which was weird but nice) was play through Yoda's story mode and I gotta say, he's pretty fun to use. I went up two style levels, which I have no idea what the hell that means, and unlocked two characters.
The announcer's voice is annoying as hell. Also, when I was playing Algol, it looked like he pulled a chair out of nowhere and sat on it in the middle of the match! If it wasn't a chair, what the hell was it? Besides those two things though, the game is pretty sweet so far. Looks fantastic. Though as far as it being better than Dead Or Alive 4, I doubt it. I'll have to play it some more before I make that call.

Ok, a few more thoughts now that I've played the game for several hours and just now took a break. Finding matches online can sometimes be frustratingly difficult. The quick match option is garbage, almost every time I click it I get "unable to join session" which I've encountered in other fighting games before, but I would get that message about ten times in a row before actually getting into a match. I've found searching for a custom match is much, much quicker if you just want to get in and fight, and it has the added bonus of not matching you up against people who are vastly superior to you in every way(my third match I was up against someone who was 14 levels higher than I was. Yeah, I was destroyed). Otherwise online play is pretty smooth, I've played about twenty matches and only encountered lag in about two of them.
Arcade mode is much harder than I remember, or maybe that's because The Apprentice is borderline cheap. Seriously, he can shoot lightning from his fingers while jumping in the air. I had a hell of a time beating him for the first time, but iran through Arcade mode a second time immediatly after and didn't have nearly as much trouble. Regardless, he's much more difficult to beat than Algol, but it's pretty satisfying when you do because he's got a pretty girly scream.
And Nightmare is totally badass in this game, I love what they've done with him. His costume is awesome and his voice is really demonic. Seigfried looks good as well, and although I haven't unlocked him yet, I ran into a Rock player online and he looks sweet too. So far, this seems to be the best game in the series-I haven't played the third one but this is much better than Soul Calibur II, that's for sure.
One final thing, has anybody created a character yet? I tried to, and it turned out I could only edit a preexisting character and thus not get to name my creation. Am I missing something, or is the ability to create an entirely new character something you have to unlock? Because I really am dying to make a Hulk Hogan and take him online.
Edit: Alright, got the character creation sorted out. They could've made it a bit more obvious, it's to the left of the question box.

What am I doing wrong? You're doing the button combination right? That's probably the problem. Just press the left bumper once the other guy gets into soul crush. The problem I usually have is that I'll get their soul gauge flashing red, but then they'll proceed to do nothing but guard until the soul gauge stops flashing, thus never giving me a chance to pull a critical finish off. Getitng up to 100 for the achievment is going to be a pain.

Question: in the character creation mode, can you make a character a Jedi?I don't think you can, which to me is a good thing. I don't want to have to go online and deal with lightning shooting custom characters all the time. Speaking of which, once you find a character you're good with, online is really fun. Of course, that's because winning in itself is fun, but I've had a blast even when I've lost(and I lose more than I win, my online record I believe is a not so hot 20-25). At first I used Nightmare, seeing as he was my main in the first two Soul Caliburs, but the speedy characters really tore me apart. He's great for getting ring outs, but when it takes three victories to win a match, that's just not gonna cut it. I switched to one of the special guest characters, and I've been doing a lot better since.
So, who does everybody use as their main? After giving up on Nightmare earlier tonight, I've gotta say Angol Fear(one of the special guest characters) is officially my best fighter. She's got great range and speed, and relatively easy to pull off combos that can be devastating. Of course, I'll probably still use Nightmare, but not as much anymore, and I'm pretty decent with Lizardman. Those three are about the only ones I'm any good with, but I'll occasionaly play as Yoda or Algol. Oh, and of course, I like to pull out my custom character of Mr. America every once in a while, whose weapon is a giant squid. I lose almost every match with him, but it's hilarious to see people's reactions when I choose him.

I'm late responding to my own post, but since my bro's 360 is in for repairs, I might as do it: I am disappointed there only one new canon character, but if there should be a Soul Calibur 5, the character roster needs to be shrunk. It's very bloated now, which I guess is fine for people who want more choice, but that also leaves the possibility of imbalance. The five characters designed by the animu/mango artists design's aren't very inspired (well, Ashlotte's design is bad*****) and some of the older characters just need to go (Pick one NamDai: Cassandra or Sophita, Rock or Astaroth. And Lizardman needed to go yesterday)
Oh well, this is me just ranting.

The Tower of Lost Souls is one of the most frustrating things I have ever attempted in any video game. It's really is unfair some of the things they put you through-for example, I've somehow made it to floor 53 of 60 floors and I've gotta use ONE character and beat FOURTEEN without any healing in between, while said fourteen characters have abilities such as Venom Fang, Nullify Ring Out, and Restore Health. It's truly impossible, I spent a good hour on that one specific floor last night, and even the one round where I started off with four perfects, I still lost(and by that time only two fighters were remaining. Yeah, I was pissed).
I'd rather Weapon Master mode had come back then that garbage.

I've found some of the stupider players won't be able to catch on when you bait them towards the edge of the ring and they'll just teleport themselves over the edge for an easy ring out. I managed to do it three times in a row to one guy.
Kilik's are manageable though, since I usually use Seong Mi-na(or Angol Fear, who has the same moveset) I'm able to stay away because we all know Kilik players love to keep you at a distance and just spam the vertical hits. They usually get impatient and charge right at me and bam, I combo them. Another horrible character to run into is Yoda, he's got one move where even if you guard against it, it still pushes you back at least a few feet. I ran into a player who selected the smallest stage in the game and ALL he did was that move, trying to ring me out(and it worked, three times I guarded against it but three times I was rung out anyways).

I still need to get on Live, so I haven't experienced the horrors of the insanely cheap characters. What about The Apprentice? Is he insanely cheap too? He gave me a hard time when I unlocked him--constantly using the Force lightning and such.
Still can't get enough of the character creation mode. I've made Kasumi, Miho (Sin City), Wario, Waluigi, Captain Falcon, Papa Smurf, The Merchant from Resident Evil 4 (of course, I didn't have anything available under the male costumes, so I had to make a sexy female version of the Merchant), and others that I can't even remember right now.

I've only played online relatively little, but it hasn't been that bad. 'Course, I usually put on the +/- 10 levels thing so that I'm only facing similarly low-level opponents, and anyone who's inclined to be cheap will likely be doing it so they can level up quickly. The worst I got was some silly kid who prefaced the match with, "I'm playing to win, I just want the achievement, if you don't like it find a different match," which just made it all the funnier when I handed his ass to him. I'm not usually one to gloat about victories (especially considering that I lose more often than I win), but that one was kinda nice. (-:

Now that I finally got a copy, I have to say I really love it. I've been playing it since I got it home almost non-stop.
Proceeded to beat Story mode with Mitsurugi right away. Finally, he gets a decent ending. The last time he got one of those was way back in Soul Blade.

The Merchant from Resident Evil 4 (of course, I didn't have anything available under the male costumes, so I had to make a sexy female version of the Merchant)
That's the best thing I've ever heard of. A sexy Merchant. X3

Finally got to play it some. The gameplay is up to par and from what I've seen character creation is very thorough, but sadly the story mode really is lacking. You get some some scrolling text and then the entire thing plays out like a glorified arcade mode until the ending arrives. That's just very disappointing and weak after the branching paths and hidden minibosses that were present in III's storyline. It looks like there's only two costumes for every character, as opposed to the four variations that existed in SC III. It's like they weren't even trying. It's an impressive looking game but a lot of depth was sacrificed.

What they lack in extra costumes, they make up for in the ability to bring the main fighters into Create a Soul and edit their colors and outfits there. (really "costume 3 & 4" in III was just alternate color schemes that you could edit as well)

Okay, got the game and I'm loving it... but... What the hell?
I made a new costume for Talim and put her in a fight... And by the end of the match she had nothing but underwear on... WTF?!
