http://comingsoon.net/nextraimages/toystory3d.jpgThe Walt Disney Studios is taking the latest advances in digital 3-D technology "to infinity and beyond" with ambitious plans to debut new Disney Digital 3-D(TM) versions of Disney-Pixar's Toy Story on October 2nd, 2009, and Toy Story 2 on February 12th, 2010, it was announced by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. Both of these beloved animated features are being newly converted to 3-D in advance of the June 18th, 2010 release of Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 3 (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=19252), which is being produced as a 3-D motion picture and will represent the state-of-the-art for the genre. Veteran Pixar filmmaker Lee Unkrich (co-director Toy Story 2) is directing.

Academy AwardŽ-winning filmmaker John Lasseter (director of the first two "Toy Story" films and chief creative officer for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios) will personally oversee the creative side of the 3-D conversions for Toy Story and Toy Story 2 with his acclaimed team of technical wizards handling all the necessary steps in the conversion process.

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, "We are committed to bringing moviegoers the best and most exciting 3-D moviehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/1.gif (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=41189#) experience, and we think they're going to love seeing Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and all the wonderful 'Toy Story' cast of characters in an eye popping and dazzling way. John Lasseter and the animation team are putting all their passion and hard work into making this the greatest 3-D experience yet, and we're excited to share their efforts with audiences everywhere."

Lasseter added, "The 'Toy Story' films and characters will always hold a very special place in our hearts and we're so excited to be bringing this landmark film back for audiences to enjoy in a whole new way thanks to the latest in 3-D technology. I am sure that this is going to be nothing short of fantastic and people are going to be blown away by the experience. With 'Toy Story 3' shaping up to be another great adventure for Buzz, Woody and the gang from Andy's room, we thought it would be great to let audiences experience the first two films all over again and in a brand new way. 3-D offers lots of great new possibilities for the art of animation and we will continue to use this new technology to tell our stories in the best possible way."

In converting Toy Story and Toy Story 2 to state-of-the-art 3-D films, the technical team is retrieving all of the original digital elements and rebuilding them in 3-D.

Originally released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1995, Toy Story was the first feature filmhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/1.gif (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=41189#) from Pixar Animation Studios and director John Lasseter. The film went on to receive OscarŽ nominations for Original Score, Original Song, and Screenplay, and earned Lasseter a Special Achievement Award "for the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." Toy Story 2 was released in 1999, and reunited voice talents Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, in their roles as Woody and Buzz. The film became one of the most popular animated features of all time, and received an Academy AwardŽ nomination for Original Song.

How does Disney Ditagal 3D actually work anyway? How does it affect 3d movies, and live action stuff. XP

It involves wearing a newer design of 3D glasses. Bolt is suppose to be filmed this way as well. The rerelease of Nightmare Before Christmas was also retooled to use this process. I really hope it can be viewed without them, since I don't like wearing those glasses.

This sounds so awesome. I love the Toy Story movies and it would be great to see them in Disney 3D. I also think that doing this is a great way to lead up to Toy Story 3, especially for those who aren't familiar with the previous movies and wouldn't naturally rent the DVDs. Anyway, I'll probably go and check out those movies when they eventually are released. I'm definately planning on seeing Toy Story 3 when it does come out in 2010.

From what I understand and have seen, they can be viewed without, but it won't really pop out at you.

There's no point to going into a Digital 3-D movie if you're not going to wear the glasses--you'll just see two images at once.

I'm just the sucker for this stunt. Seeing Nightmare in 3-D was great, and I saw it on its first run when Knick Knack was in 3-D as well. If what they did to Knick Knack is any indication, Toy Story 3D should be amazing.

And they will be VERY VERY fuzzy.

I wonder if TS3 is going to purposely be 3-D, or will it just be released that way. As in, will they purposely add in random scenes to say "Hey! You're watching 3-D! look at what we can do!" If anyone has ever seen old timey 3-D films, you know what I'm talking about. I remember seeing a Stooges short on TV that was clearly released as a 3-D film, and they basically spent half the time waving stuff in front of the camera.

I really hope it's to enhance the film, and not to hamper it, when you finally watch it at home on DVD.

That sounds great, I've never been to a 3-D movie before. If I'm still alive in 2010. I will go and see Toy Story 3D. :p

I doubt Pixar would do that. Most of the scenes from 1 and 2 have some "right at the camera" shots that would look pretty good in 3D though.

Only the one that Disney wanted to use before they got back together with Pixar.

The real plot Pixar was working on, or the one Disney was going to do? pixar hasn't devulged the plotline yet, but I can try to remember the Disney one. Disney wanted a movie where Buzz got recalled back to Taiwan for an undisclosed reason, and they all had to go out and save him.

Personally, I'd love to have seen a part of that where the gang stumbles upon a bunch of Bootlegg copies of Buzz that talk broken English, like a bad instruction manual. But someone probably would have considered that politically incorrect or something, so it wouldn't have been in the movie anyway.
