Since a lot of people here are still in high school (myself included), I thought I'd ask this: How many of you actually watch "Channel One"? AND, how many people know what the Hell I'm talking about? I'll make a post later on about what it is, for the people who don't know.

Lol! I do... or did. Its a great news program, and a huge stepping stone for anyone into media arts. It used to be my one-stop news station for the day.

I don't have any Channel 1. For as long as I can remember it goes like this...

4: NBC
3:RNN
2:CBS
1:NONE!

I guess they don't play it at every school....
Anyway, Channel One is this teen-oriented news show that we (Michigan High-Schoolers) watch every day. It's supposed to be completely freelance news, not supported by the government, any corporations, etc. (kinda like PBS). It's only about 15 minutes long, and, all in all, pointless IMO (Sorry Borg4of3). Like I said, it's supposed to not be supported by any corporations/government but every day, like clockwork, there's a Nike/Gatorade commercial, and a commercial encouraging you to join the Army/Navy/Marines/Air Force. Not may people pay attention to it anymore around here.

Channel One on my TV is home shopping by day and PPV porno by night.

"Channel One" is not litterally on Channel One on your home TV...the reason alot of schools air it...is cause C1 sprung the dough for the TVs as part of the bargan...how do they pay for the TVs? Through advertising..

I used to watch Channel One when I went to school in El Paso...that was when it 1st came out.

=O I'm old!!

Ah, Channel One...The only thing it ever does is advertise the same crap over and over again. Sorry, but I've never really become interested in it. I guess it is good for the kids who never watch news during the day, but I usually do so it doesn't tell me much new stuff on it. That's just my opinion, though. ^_^;;

I used to get Channel One in high school too. I used it as an opportunity to take a nap.

I do the same things you guys used to do. :) Sometimes I sleep, other times I talk, and sometimes I just do my homework while it's on. This semester, though, we keep turning it off so we can finish our tests in trig.

I watched Channel One at my school in Memphis, Tennessee, it usually comes on at about 7:45 am but I don't know when it comes on anywhere else.

Ah, come on! It wasn't that bad - or boring! So, maybe teens in high school aren't the greatest target audience for a news program, but you at least have to be impressed with the quality of the show. Not too many of us read or watched the news regularily back then, so it was a chance to become just a tad more worldly in a fairly quick and entertaining way.

...Man do I feel really alone here. :p

ADDED: Oh, and the commercials weren't all that bad - it was the first time I saw that kickbutt Smash Brothers "Me and You, and You and Me" commercial that remains my fave!
-Still, do they still play those horrible Polar Ice gum commercials? Hated seeing those every day

Then that makes two of us, for I also remember watching it when it first aired. (And I was in El Paso at the time, too. Small world, no?) After the nationwide Channel One was over, we'd have to watch the local middle-school version. :p

I lost track of Channel One after my junior year in high school, didn't even know it was still around until I saw this post. Sounds like it's become even more commercialized than when I last saw it. Guess they haven't cut down on the pretty graphics either - the news stories always got lost in them, imho. Do they still do the quizzes during the commercials? I always liked those.

Back in 7th grade it was on right after lunch, and the 'team' that could get the most quiz questions right at the end of the week got bonus points. Gotta love the days of bonus points...

I used to watch the news program when Christina Alzshul (not sure if that's how her last name is spelled, but last time I watched MTV she was on MTV News) Lisa Ling (she's now on The View) and a couple other anchors who moved on to bigger things (on guy ended up on ABC News, another had a small role in the Whoopi Gholdberg/Ted Danson movie around 10 years ago).

When last I left Ch. 1, I was glad to leave. But it didn't matter. It always gave me 20 min. to do all the homework I needed to do for that day. :D

I think I'm the oldest person here now :(. I'm 24 years old, just graduated from college (Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin, December 2001! :D :D) I graduated from high school in May 1995 in the small town of Texarkana, Texas.

I can remember when Channel One premiered. It was supposed to be the "teen CNN", and the only thing it had going for it that was original was the map feature, which was cool. (You know, it starts out with a colorful map of the Earth (political) at the beginning of every news story, then the map zooms in to wherever the news took place? For all you young'uns out there in high school now, do they still use the zooming maps at the beginning of each report?)

But I like maps & flags, so maybe I'm the only person who's ever noticed that.

I can't believe Channel One is still on the air in high schools after all these years!!! No one liked it when I was in high school, no one seems to like it now, so other than the advertising, how could Channel One stay in business?

It's nice that Channel One attempted to get teens to start watching the news, and I wish more people (of all ages) knew what was going on in the World around them. But, Channel One seemed like propoganda that was being shoved down our throats when I was in high school. What does everyone else think?

Same here. That or get the homework I frequently forgot to do the night before in that bought 15-20 min. I don't believe the school forced such a think on us. In college they had something even more insidious, some MTV wannabe that yammered continually on a couple of dozen TVs placed around the caf that we couldn't turn off or change the channel on. I figured if I heard "Hard Knock Life" one more time I'd go mad....

They still do the map, but now it's a CG globe, and it's topgraphical, but with lines to indicate political bariers, of course. The Earth spins around until they get to the general area of the world the report is in, and then zooms in. Neat little effect.

Most of the time I don't watch it, because
a) Noisy people drown out the sound
b) My math teacher forgets to turn it on
c) I'm busy reading, or getting the assignment for the next two days done in five minutes (and this is precalc we're talkin' about here) :D :D
d) I'm enthralled in conversation with one of my friends in history who sits right next to me. (that's what the teacher gets for having us choose our own seats!)

We never had this problem. Our televisions would all turn on automatically, even if the morning announcements weren't over yet. Let me tell you, it was crazy when one time it accidentally turned on during a test (a final, no less!)

Yes. How else would they spread their awful, overplayed military and anti-drug propoganda to the masses. Otherwise, what would fuel my bloodlust?

We used to have TV's that did that, but my school got new TV's that don't turn on by themselves. Hooray for new technology!

Have yoooou eveeeeeer wanted to destrooooy Channel One? The people in that homeworkhelp at about.com commercial are etched into my brain. Be lucky I don't see them on the street! For FOUR YEARS OF MY LIFE I had to waste 15 minutes of my morning watching this garbage just so my school can have televisions.

Channel One is the only thing our school uses the TV's for :)

Why yes i did! But i'm in high school now, and only watched it in middle school. At least, that's what was on the TV when my teacher turned it on. The actual watching of it is a little hazy in my mind :D .

What the Hell? When did they do that?
I guess this just proves how much I don't pay attention to the show.

Our TVs turn on automatically, like today when we were finishing our quiz in math and someone had to get up and turn it off. It starts off by blasting music and it ruins our concentration! :p ;)

Someone showed me this site a long time ago, but I thought it would be amusing to post it here. It's about how bad Channel 1 is. Some of the articles are very interesting even though I think the site is made by a bunch of fundamentalists. :D

Especially the "How to Cheat on a Book Report" article.

Enjoy! ;)

Whoa, memories. It was pretty cool when I was in school and began watching it. It seemed have some actual journalistic merit to it. I cringe at what it has become.
