The Nintendo DS sold almost 2.5 million systems for December, but the impact of the Wii shortages are clearly seen in the hardware sales data for the month, which shows the Wii outselling the Xbox 360 by less than 100,000 units for the month. Call of Duty 4 and Super Mario Galaxy were in a close race for the #1 software title for December, with Call of Duty 4 winning by about 70,000 copies. Most of the top 10 software titles in December were also in the top 10 software sales for the year.

One year after its release and the PS3 still at the bottom, while the PS2 keeps outselling it it seems:sweat:

Heh, even when they sell over 700,000, the PS3 is still in dead last. Is it too early to call it the Atari 5200 of it's time?

None of the numbers are really surprising, but it just shows how strong the PS2 is still going and that people don't feel the need to upgrade to the PS3 just yet. Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and UTIII just isn't enough yet to move more consoles. While I still disagree with Sony's decision, the loss of BC in the 40GB PS3 doesn't seem to matter in the big picture, with the PS2 selling almost 4 million units in 2007 alone.

It's going to be really hard to catch up to Nintendo in 2008. If Sony manages to get things right with Home, LittleBigPlanet, MGS4, and their other big titles, Microsoft may need to start worrying.

No they're wishing Sony didn't make the machine so expensive, nor confuse them with so many models...some with the backwards compatiblity removed...and more better games.

The games are already here with more coming in 08 , and the console is cheaper with the 40 gig model. I don't think the SKU situation is confusing at all.

Poor, poor PS3. Nothing against Sony, but I can't help but get a feeling of shadenfruede, seeing the once mighty PlayStation name falling into dead last--even getting its ass handed to it by its predecessor. While I'm sure MGS4 will be a critically acclaimed game it's going to take a lot more than that for the PS3 to get out of the hole it dug itself in with the high price, confusing number of models, and some models have no backwards capability.

The DS continues to do outstanding and the Wii and 360 aren't too shabby either. Not a bad top selling games list for the month, Super Mario Galaxy did amazingly well considering it was released at the end of the year, but the sales list for the year is missing some very worthy titles. Where's Bioshock? The Orange Box? Wii Play is the second top selling game of the year? Even if it's a ten dollar game, I'd rather just buy a Wii remote and save ten bucks instead of spending it on a game you can breeze through in less than an hour.

I could bet that it's because the PS3 is considered as a cheap Blu-Ray driver not a console. Now that the Blu-Ray wins the format wars.

Also, there's the PS2. The PS2 is still strong. Sony won't kill off the PS2 now. But they'll have too. When it will be at 99$, I might rebuy a PS2. I want to replay at Shadow of Colassus and ICO.

I would buy a PS3 only for the Blu-Ray driver. The games don't interest me at all.

The PS3 lost too many exclusive games that the console is now not worth at all. The biggest suprise is the lost of Monster Hunter 3 from the PS3 to Wii. The rest are all now multiplatform Devil May Cry, GTA,...

If Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't to gain some sales, the PS3 is done. For FF13, I'm sure it won't come in 2008.

I feel very very sad for the PlayStation 3.It's an awsome console.....it has so much potential....if only Sony would take advantage of that.It still has the potential to be a success.

But...if Metal Gear Solid 4 can't bring in any sales...it's all up to Final Fantasy XIII whether the PS3 will be a True Success....or a Major Flop.

That may be so, as I said. Zack and Wiki's December sales figures weren't made available anywhere, so those numbers only represent what it sold in its first month of release.
