We all know that one of the most alluring things about B:TAS was the use of those cool little title cards at the beginning of the episode to give you a hint of what to expect in the episode. Combined with the great orchestral music, it was a great way to open a show. But which one was your favourite?
For me, it's probably the "Deep Freeze" title card. It just looks great and Shirley Walker's music matches it perfectly, capturing the cold and complacent feel of Freeze's character. I also love the one for "The Man Who Killed Batman". "Riddler's Reform" would be my third choice.

Right away I'd like to say it was either "Feat of Clay" or "Mudslide", but after seeing the Freeze title again I would have to agree with you. The "happy/Sad" theater mask which appeared in a bunch of episodes...those were pretty cool too.

Here's a convenient way to see them all on the same screen:

My faves are probably "Mad as a Hatter", for it's classic Lewis Carroll illustration shot:

and Mudslide:

I really liked the two face one. The light that shines down, the coin thats flipped, the squared face. I dont know, the title cards of batman were so stylish, incredible.
And dont forget, the part II. So strange, it looks so much better that the title card for part 1, just because of the use of those words, and the font used.

I've often wondered about that "Two-Face" title card... If you focus on staring at the black part of Two-Face's outfit, you can see a different image of someone tossing a coin to the one that's blatantly obvious onscreen. I wish I could describe it accurately but you just have to look hard.

I'm not sure what you mean about a different image of someone tossing a coin, but that is a great title card. Here are some of my favorites:

What I meant was that on the Two-Face title card, there's someone tossing a coin (it's obviously meant to be Two-Face). But if you look closely at that image, and focus on the black part of him and his outfit, you can see things like a different outstretched hand tossing a coin. Like one of those puzzles you look at where there's an image hidden within another image.

I'll go with "Nothing To Fear". Neat spooky image and I loved Shirley Walker's music cue.

Come on folks...no one mentions this one:
http://www.worldsfinestonline.com/WF/batman/btas/episodes/secondchance/00.jpg
That's just beautiful. Stark. Threatening. And yet all it is is words with harsh lighting. So simple. So film noir. So cool.
But yeah...Deep Freeze and Mudlide are very cool too.
I also like this one, though, because it's the only moving title card in the series:

And this one, cause WOW...great music and great pre-title-card intro:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, often the title card + musical underscore is actually BETTER than the episode...
Most of my favorites have been mentioned, but here:

Joker's favor IS a great one. Very creepy and gives you a good taste for what you're about to see.
Always thought the exceptions to the rule were very weird. Ones with moving title cards like Heart of Ice and The Laughing Fish. Then there's The Demon's Quest, where it looks like they forgot to do a title card and just stuck the titles over a still image a few minutes in.

Man, I wish they sold posters of these! They'd look so great framed and on a wall...

Heart of Ice and The Demon's Quest are both pretty arguable as well.

Anyone know who is responsible for making the title cards and some specifics on their painting techniques? They are exquisite. I love how you can tell they're made by hand, and they really reflect the sophistication and artistry of the show.

Eric Radomski was responsible for most, if not all, of them. His departure from STAS and TNBA was one of the contributing factors to the cards absence in the later series.

ahh, thanks. I'm actually remembering someone mentioning they did the title card on one of the dvd commentaries. Probably Mr. Radomski.
He is quite a talented painter. I wonder which backgrounds were painted personally by him. I just love the airbrush work. I dont know much about airbrushing, but I think it looks so amazing. I would have loved a dvd extra that went into the bgs more and how they were painted, maybe even a little tutorial by Mr. Radamski. That would have been great.
Maybe we can get a Background Extra when they hopefully do the MOTP special edition. :)

I agree. The backgrounds in B:TAS were perhaps the biggest source of what I would call its magic--that indescribable, moody feel you got from the show that they never were able to replicate again.
I really miss the title cards in later series--I think that The New Batman Adventures and Superman especially could've benefited from them.

I see what you're talking about; def. makes the title card a whole lot more interesting.
For those who can't see it, look just under the white hand. There's a spot a bit darker than the gray in the background. That is the hand. Follow that black through the white's torso to see the hand. Just above that, in something that almost looks like a random piece of white sticking out where the rest of the body is split directly in half, there is a mouth for the darker figure. This, I think, is proof that it was done on purpose.
If you can see those, you see the entire figure. Really adds dimension to an otherwise[IMO] boring title card.

Even without that interesting find, I'd still consider it one of the best title cards in the entire series.
