View Full Version : What scares you?

What are you afraid of? Bees? Public speaking?

I guess my biggest fear is rejection in all its forms, even the little ones. I have a video here on my desk that I want to lend a coworker, but it's been there for days because I'm afraid she might not take it.

Oh, and bees. And cockroaches creep me out and the thought of them crawling on me is terrifying. And it's a leftover from my OCD days, but I have a fear that I'll accidentally do something that will cause a terrible accident. Like if I drip a little water on the floor I think someone will fall and kill themselves.

I have a very big fear of spiders. It sounds so stupid, but those little things terrify me to a point were I can't even be within 10 feet of them. I remember when I was little my cousins used to push me into spiders webs and make me cry.

I'm also scared of loosing those close to me, especially after my grandmother's death.

Honestly? Walking through four-way intersections. Its not like I'm afraid to cross the street, but I cannot cross these in DC or Arlington without feeling very much unsafe. At certain places at peak times, you can have a light to walk and yet still have cars turning onto the road from somewhere. Its stupid and I'm surprised accidents don't happen. So I'm very careful to constantly check my surroundings, because there are bad drivers out there and I don't trust folks to always notice pedestrians.

1) Death. It really bothers me, and whenever I find myself thinking about it--the fact that one day I will basically just cease to exist--it gives me a very unnerving feeling that takes me awhile to get rid of. The thought seems to only really occur to me when I'm lying in bed at night, in the dark, trying to fall asleep, and that's gotta be the absolute worst time to being thinking about it.

2) Losing a family member. I've been rather fortunate that most of the family I've grown up with is still with me. But the ones I have lost (including one pair of great-grandparents in particular) were especially hard on me something I wish to avoid as much as possible.

3) Failure. In the last few years, I've began to doubt my potential a lot and see my future as a big gigantic question mark. I'm 29 years old and--sad to say at that age--I just have absolutely no idea where my life is going. And that bothers me big time.

Same here, though I'm 25, soon to be 26, I see where you're coming from.

1) Being in front of a lot of people. I'm pretty shy and being in front of so many people makes me nervous, especially when it's a presentation of some sort.2) Bees and wasps. The fact that they can sting pretty damn easily has always made me afraid being around them, especially after actually being stung.

The thought seems to only really occur to me when I'm lying in bed at night, in the dark, trying to fall asleep, and that's gotta be the absolute worst time to being thinking about it.Ditto. That's exactly how I feel about it. It's very unnerving to me.

I'm also terrified of bees, wasps, hornets and the like. If I see or hear something flying that buzzes and stings, I'm out of there. Kinda ruins picnics because I'm constantly running away from the food.

Also on the bug note, I'm afraid of spiders and roaches. I can trace my fear of spiders back to playing Sim Ant when I was younger. Roaches are just icky. I had one in my dorm room last year and was so terrified of it even after it had died that I made my roommate get rid of it. Yuck.

I'm also afraid of heights. I don't have a problem flying or being on a roller coaster, but getting on a ladder scares me. My friend took me hiking over the summer up a mountain and halfway up I looked back at the scenery and just froze. We were up too high for my liking.

And I'm claustrophobic. I had an MRI over the summer on my knee and even though it was an open tube and I was only about halfway in, I was on the verge of a panic attack. I had to keep telling myself that there was plenty of room for me to move if something happened. If I had been having an MRI than would have forced me to go head first, I don't think I could have done it. I also won't go to tanning beds because of it. And I don't do enclosed water slides.

Bees, Republican control of government, and being like my mother.

That's why I'll never be scared of heights or roller coasters because. My mother is, and I am so horrified/terrified of being like her at all that I can go on any roller coaster or lean out over any balcony without fear. Anyone ever had that? I suppose it's like being so worried about looking scared that you don't have time or energy to actually be scared.

I guess with the bugs... I've never been stung by a bee/wasp so I don't know if I'm allergic or not. I don't like other bugs but they don't bother me. I even made friends with my house centipede (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_centipede) and left him in charge while I was on vacation so that he would deal with any roaches that showed up while I was out. A while later I accidentally squished him and felt really bad.

Death. Especially sudden. Even dead things.

Mold or anything related to it. I'm straight terrified of mold, because, it just looks disgusting. When we had to clean house a couple of years ago, there was this sack of oranges. I had to pick them up and I screamed when I saw the back side of them. *shudder* Oh, and there was this sack of potatoes that pretty much been in there since forever. It had spuds growing out of it.

Weeds. I actually don't know what caused this, but maybe it's because I am short, and weeds tend to be close or a little taller than me around these parts. And they're so thick around here too. That's probably why I can't mow the lawn, specifically the backyard. It's a jungle.

I'm actually not scared of bugs, but I know that my brother took a picture of the famed camel spiders when he was in Iraq [the first time iirc] and those suckers are huge. I really hate to see one in person.

Escalators. Seriously. Stairs should not move.

Same here, especially escalators going down. I can't just hop onto it like everyone else can, it takes a few seconds.

Death: Whenever I end up thinking about it, I get a pang of regret in my gut and try to erase the thought out of my head.

Loss: There was one year in which my family had to attend about 8 wakes/funerals and it was beyond depressing. I hate going to funerals and wakes where all you can do is cry and talk about "what if" and "back then". It makes you feel useless, but in truth, it's all you can do.

Spiders: Always been afraid of spiders. Just how slow they move creeps me out.

Thunder: I'm talking about that one, abrupt, boom of thunder during the hard (and eerily quiet) pitter-patter of rain. It's practically loud enough to rival a minor explosion.

For bee/wasp phobics: when one of these animals hovers around you, it is trying to figure out whether or not you're a threat to its colony. It smells the carbon dioxide in your breath, and what it's looking for are changes in your rate of breathing. If you gasp, breathe quickly or breathe more heavily at the sight of a bee, it assumes you are an excited bee-eating beast and will alert its sisters to danger in the area.

They really will ignore you if you can pretend they're not there. I can even pet them, especially bumblebees. Be gentle and relaxed and they won't feel threatened.

To spider phobics, I have a question or two: would you be equally terrified of equally tiny mice, birds or cats with equally venomous bites? Why or why not? What makes the shape of a spider scarier than any other organism? What's so frightening about the extra legs?

We have small, spindly, wriggling, jointed appendages as well, which we call fingers. A spider shouldn't be any "creepier" than another person's hand, and is certainly nowhere near as germ-ridden.

Only three genera even have a dangerous bite, and none bite unprovoked. Venom takes a lot of nutrients to produce, and is their only means of killing and digesting prey. The very last thing a spider wants to do is waste venom on defending itself, and will first resort to running, leaping, anything it can do to get far away from a larger animal like ourselves.

And lets' not forget the fact that spiders are absolutely gorgeous living things. Here's a jumping spider closeup where you can't even see the dreaded legs.
http://www.fwnp.com/jumping-spider-eyes.jpg

Jumpers have the most precious little faces. All you can see in this pic are four owl-like eyes in fur. Pretend it's an alien kitten, or something.

Other spiders are as delicate and beautiful as flowers or snowflakes:

http://www.fwnp.com/jumping-spider-eyes.jpgThat is a terrifying picture to me. When I was little, [while all the other kids had Sim City] I had Sim Ant on my computer and you would try to avoid the spider but when you got caught there would be a closeup of the spider eating you and it was the pincers and eyes that ended up terrifying me. Yes, I would be terrified of a venomous bird. But that spider does look kinda cute.

Also, I'm not comfortable around strange large dogs. And I think about death sometimes and feel kind of scared, because if there isn't a heaven, then there would just be nothingness, and that makes me... apprehensive, I think.

I was really afraid to go down these things when I was eight and I still am, I'm just afraid I'll miss the step and fall all the way down. Going up doesn't bother me for some reason though.

Wasps: Bees don't really bother me as much but wasps, man they seem to hover on me when I am just going about my business, especially at this one certain place at work in the summer. They like to hang out where a lot of kids are too.

Doing a report in front of people: Mainly because I'm afraid I will mess up what I am talking about and no one will understand a word I said.

Intersections: It just feels odd when the green light doesn't change like it usually does, and then I worry about other cars running the red light and hitting me.

Why? What makes a furry thing with multiple round, black eyes and a couple of fangs any creepier than a dog or cat or bear? And how can you describe it as "disgusting", exactly? A spider isn't dirty or slimy. It's not warty or diseased or anything.

I can't abide arachnophobes, I'm sorry. I wish daily that the world saw arthropods (and nature in general) as I do. Words cannot express how fantastically wonderful I think spiders are, as well as bees, fleas, beetles, mantids, springtails, snails, cobras, tree frogs, koalas, mole rats, histeoteuthis, opabinia, dikdiks and Cymothoa Exigua. There are no ugly or frightening animals to me, and I can't understand from any angle how anyone else can think that there are. If I find a spider out around the house or in the garage, I leave them be unless they're the bigger freakier-looking variety or a Black Widow (sightings are rare, but they occasionally turn up). But any spider that happens to turn up in my bedroom, bathroom or anywhere else within the house will get up close and personal with the bottom of my shoe (or a paper towel if I'm barefoot.)

-High ceilings. I don't know why, but if I'm looking up at a large ceiling, or even a tall building, I have to be holding on to something, be it the wall or somebody's arm. I can't even cloud watch, because I feel like I'm going to magically shoot up into the sky.

I was never really scared of spiders. I'm only really scared of bees and wasps because I'm allergic, and because I and other members of my family have been stung badly several times. When you drink a pop with a yellowjacket in it and get stung in the throat, or when you accidentally trap a wasp in a pair of pants you're pulling on and gets stung six or seven times, you learn to be cautious.

But even then I've been in at least two situations as a reporter when I was standing, without protection, in swarms of bees while I was shooting pictures of beekeepers. And when a wasp, bee or other insect or big scary spider gets in my house, I don't kill them. I try to catch them and put them outside. The only bugs that get no mercy from me are roaches.

I feel you're wasting your time with the little speeches you're making in this thread. That's the funny thing about phobias: they tend to throw rationality out the window. Being near the edge of something, like when a mall has a thing that you can look down and has rails, that won't prevent someone who insane from pushing you. I was taught while waiting for the subway to wait on the walls so I don't get pushed onto the tracks, but since me falling does seem more fearful than getting ran over by a subway cart is scary. I don't go to a spot that has an opening from like two stories high and such.

Also I'm scared that I'm incapable of love, since I used to be distant towards people.

Bugs crawling in my ear and subpoenas. I get scared when someone knocks because my friends don't just drop by. It is usually UPS or something but I'm alwasy afraid I'm going to get served or something. Also my phone ringing because only 3 people have the number and 1 is my work and I'm on call most the time. It sucks that I have to plan my days out so that I have to be able to be at work as soon as possible. Really sucks when they call me and I'm playing video games, either turn it off or leave it on all day paused until I get back. Also people close to me dying or getting seriously injured, that would suck. That pretty much covers everything. Most things don't bother me like super natural or catastrophe type stuff. Speaking in public don't bother me anymore since if asked then its over something I know about. My own death doesn't bother me or how it happens, you only get to die once. So

People close to me dying
subpoenas
bugs in my ear
work calling me in

in that order

- using Bunsen burners in science classes, so I let my other teamates use it.:p

- guys in there 40's+ flirting with me, which unfortunately happens ALOT. They need to be punished by Willy and God.

- being cruelly bullied again.

- people...my life is basically screwed over forever, so I'm anti-social.

I'm SCARED of thunderstorms. Even if it's raining softly outside, just one BOOM! is enough to make me put my fingers to my ears and scream/run like hell to my bedroom or somewhere else safe...

I'm also afraid of bees. Mainly because I've never gotten stung by one, and I hope to keep it that way.

I'm scared of REALLY BIG rollercoasters and any amusment park/ride that goes upside-down. My mom once told me about when she went on a rollercoaster and came out nauseated. She hasn't been on one since!

I'm afraid of rejection/loneliness. That's the main reason why I haven't had any friends for a long time (7th-8th grade were perfect examples). Yes, I have high self-confidence, and I talk when I can. However, every time, I feel as if character and being yourself isn't good enough and that "looks really make the person." But my mother has always told me to not be shy or afraid and that "most people don't even KNOW HOW to socialize!"

I'm also afraid of loved ones of mine dying, but I think that I wouldn't show it. My dad recently had health problems and was in the hospital for two months. And the whole time, I've only cried hard just a couple of times. That's just me. I try to stay strong no matter what cards reality has dealt on me or my family.

(Wow. I sounded pretty deep there, didn't I...! )

3. Anything with too many legs. Like centipeds, millipeds, and maggots.

Maggots have exactly zero legs. Most insect larva have at least stubby or internal ones, but maggots lack even vestigial appendages! They move by biting down on the surface in front of them and dragging themselves forward! :D

Large flying bugs (particularly flying cockroaches, THE scariest type of bug on the planet), guns and gunshots, large barkign dogs, and anything above my head.

I am afraid of long dark corridors. I always feel that the minute I look into them, something will pop out at me.

Guns scare me. With all the shootings these days it's hard for me to believe that anyone should have one. I'm also hoping that the next president (hopefully Democrat) will enforce strict gun control.

And yes I do see the irony.;)

I'm not too fond of heights either, but I still climb things and I'm just a little nervous.

Same here. Nothing like a nice long walk across a rickety wooden bridge high up over a deep gorge to really get you thinking about your fear of heights.

This is a silly phobia, but it is 100% true.

I have a fear of walking over grates and manholes. I try my best to avoid them if possible.

Another thing that scares me are Big Boos and Hotheads from the Super Mario games. I kid you not, back when I was playing Super Mario World on the SNES, I would lose my breath and almost fall back on my chair when I saw those huge white and orange things!

I used to be paranoid of Hotheads when I was little. As for Big Boo, I was only scared when I first saw one.

Well, embarrassifg as it is, I've always struggled with an irrational fear of monsters. Up until the last couple of years (I'm nineteen now), I was terrified to be outside alone at night. I would even get nervous to be in a dark room by myself. To be fair, though, it apparantly comes from emotional trauma when I was really little. According to my mom, when I was two or three years old, my dad jokingly told me there was a dinosaur that lived in the closet. For some stupid reason, I believed it and the fear of the dark stuck with me for years afterwards. Learning about "El Chupacabra" when I was nine or ten didn't help anything. The show I saw the thing on had this perfect model or whatever of it with these gigantic, glowing red eyes that kind of burned themselves into the dark corners of my mind for a while there...

Fortunately, in recent years, that evil glow has subsided. Mostly.:p Unfortunately, however, that fear has been replaced by the fear of large, aggressive dogs and psychopaths. The dog part has mostly come from the fact that my inconsiderate neighbors let their huge pitbull run loose all the time, and it's followed me a few times when I take my baby sister for walks down the street. It always barks and growls the whole time, too. Damn dog. Oh, well. At least that fear is something that's actually real and dangerous.

Aside from the traditional fears of spiders and heights (heights aren't so bad, but I'm still wary I'm gonna look out my window and see a huge freaking spider monster. All those legs and hair and eyes *shudder*) I have a couple that are a little unconventional.

A little more than a couple, since I just recalled my fear of zombies and crap like 28 Days Later happening.

Sharp objects scare me, there's always this nagging feeling in the back of my mind they'll end up lodged into my eye are other...painful...places.

Then when I get into the shower I have this scenario like, if there's a ghost or something and it turns the shower so hot it burns off my skin. That's kinda scary.

That ties into my fear of fire too. Since I can't even light a match. Wow I'm a wimp.

Marvel Knight I thought you were scared of the shower because of some other reason. After watching the old movie Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock I felt kind of scared of taking a shower... but I got over it.

I'm a serious anginaphobe (anginaphobia being the fear of choking, BTW). When I was a little kid, I had this habit of putting things in my mouth and chewing on them. I did this once with one of my Six Million Dollar Man playset parts (some blue plastic piece), and the thing went right down my throat. I started choking instantly; if my mother hadn't been there to administer the Heimlich maneuver, I would've died. From then on, I've been extremely cautious about what I put in my mouth, and I chew my food very slowly and carefully. I can't even watch people on TV or in movies choking without cringing and freezing in fear. For a long time I couldn't even eat pizza in malls because I was scared that I'd choke on the stringy cheese and no one would be there to save me.

I don't know if this is for real or not, but I recently developed a slight, little fear of walking on ice ever since I slipped and got a concussion 2 weeks ago, putting me outta school for two days.

I'm ususally not scared of bugs, but what I hate the most are pine beedles. They kill all the trees therefore producing more fire fuel where I like to camp, they have long anteannas, and when they land on you they stick.
