This is getting ridiculous. I've been waiting for this movie in some shape or form to come to the states for the past 6 months and I haven't heard a peep about it being released here. What is up?! Is it even going to land here?

MOD EDIT: No fansub or piracy discussion. Any more of it happens in this thread and it's an official infraction on your TZ account.

I don't think the movie has even been released on dvd in Japan yet so it might be awhile before it crosses the pond.

However considering its a movie its doubtful it will be released by any of the ussual companies. The best we can hope for is a company like Sony will release it.

You never know it could come to North America, I'm just saying the usual anime companies might be weary about licensing something which would cost them so much money.

I'd buy the R2 DVD if its out, they ussually have english subs

Alucard, you mean the R2 DVD?

I doubt it will come out here until after the Japanese DVD release, probably well after. Some companies are way ahead of the curver on getting into the digital business realm, but Gainax and their partners.....not so much. Maybe by summer 2008 if anyone over here can afford the license.

The only people who've seen the Eva movie are the Japanese theatergoers. No one has fansubbed it (to answer your first post) and it hasn't been released on DVD in either Japan or America.

But releasing brand new Eva movies would be like printing money (ADV wouldn't keep repackaging the TV series if it didn't sell like the proverbial hotcakes) so I'd expect the stronger anime companies to fight to the death over it.

Yes but ADV didn't license End Of Evangelion because of the price Gainax expected them to buy it for.

Not exactly. Manga just outbid them.

Hey, maybe ADV will have a chance this time.

It can't come soon enough IMO. I'm consoling myself with the soundrack till then.

So basically no one has a raw.
Not quite true. Parts of the film have been leaked, though not the whole film. So the wait for the nice, clear, legal DVDs continues.

Why would you expect it to come out in America so soon? Evangelion isn't that big of a deal here. It has no mainstream popularity outside hardcore anime fandom and I'd have expected a few years before it was considered for official translation and release.

While the "best anime ever" hype around Evangelion has died down, it's still a well-known franchise that sells. The people who thought an official translated/dubbed Region 1 DVD of Rebuild would be on the shelves two months after its Japanese theatrical release had very unrealistic expectations, but there are probably a few companies waiting to chomp at the distribution rights. (And an anime's "nicheness" isn't really an obstacle for its western release anymore--Evangelion is more mainstream than Haruhi Suzumiya, for example, which still got a huge "Special Edition" release.)

But it's important to remember that whatever distributor vies for Rebuild, they have to negotiate for four films, not just one--and two of them don't even exist yet.

Anyone know where to get THAT when it comes out? I have a region free player, so even if I have no idea what the hell they're saying, I can at least WATCH it.

I'm not in too much of a rush to get movie from Japan onto DVD and out onto the market, but I guess like said above they'll let the major companies knife fight each other for it, personally I'd rather wait until all movies have been completed and put in some big package, but that's me, I doubt everyone here wants to wait that long.

OK. ADV has the series rights. Manga/Starz has the original movies (Death & Rebirth, End of Evangelion). Both use the same VAs (at least with the main characters). Here's my picks:

-ADV Films main English producer/distributor of the TV show
They are a strong bet and will guarantee the return of the original cast, but I don't think they have enough cash to survive a bidding war, even though they have Sojitz by their side for extra financial backing. Chances: Very High
-Funimation the big anime company in Texas other than ADV
They want to be number one, and have a strong interest in acquiring new stuff. A strong interest in releasing/acquiring movies (Vexille) may make them a dark horse in the bidding war. Chances: Moderate/High
-Warner Bros. A Time Warner Company
They have weird interests. Even though their output has been only one anime (The Animatrix) and their second movie won't be until Spring (Appleseed: Ex Machina), they can give the Evangelion movies a huge push. Since Ex Machina is being dubbed by ADV, the dubbing studio could still handle the English-language version. Plus, the movies will be guaranteed for release on Blu-Ray. Chances: High/Very High (my top pick)
-Manga/Starz the premium cable channel group that owns the first Eva movies
They did the first attempt to solve the Eva problem post-TV show, plus instant access to a media outlet or more (Starz, Starz Edge, Encore, Encore Action, that deal Manga has with the Sci-Fi channel) guarantees that the Rebuild will be on TV at some point. Chances: High/Very High

Why? Shows like Lucky Star and Gurren Lagaan are already licensed, and they're on their way. Welcome to the NHK started it's US release less than a year after it finished in Japan. Shows tend to get released quicker these days, especially ones that are popular, weither through Fansubs (which I am neither condoning or condeming in this post) or through existing property awareness, and most anime fans are well aware of Eva.

What if ADV gets outbid again only this time by Sony when it comes to dubbing Rebuild of Evangelion?

I never thought about Sony. Sure, they output more anime than Warner, but they seem to mostly go for stuff they produced/distributed by themselves. According to ANN and IMDB, Sony (nor Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony Music Japan, a subsidiary of Sony proper) did not have a hand in the original Japanese production/distribution of Cyborg 009, Memories, Metropolis (even though IMDB said they did), and Steamboy. I consider them a non-factor for Eva's rebuild and a bigger dark horse than Funi.

But they had a hand in its creation by being its Japanese distributor. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=353)

You're right. But it would be interesting if they did, a Rebuild of Evangelion DVD distributed by Sony would have cool special features.

If sony got it, you could forget geting the other three movies.
