Haven't watched any GSD episodes recently. Bores me out.
the Destiny is the one with the shining finger ripoff, right?

Like Junius 7 earlier in the series, Destiny had firmly reached the point of no return. It's painful to watch, since these episodes do really play out like "We have a contract for 50 episodes. I don't care what you fill them with, just deliver them!"

I don't consider it one of the best openings, but I really think Wings of Words gets a bad rap. Nearly every SEED or Destiny opening has this upbeat and/or hot-blooded song, to the point that some wanted a song that wasn't right out of J-Rock, or just flat out wasn't TM Revolution or Nami Tamaki. But then there's Wings of Words, and its just too different. Another way to look at it is that though its generally positive, the song's more subdued tone perhaps better suits the attitude one ought to have toward the upcoming conflicts. These aren't exactly pleasant affairs. Considering what's at stake I don't see what's wrong with a tone like that as opposed to a "yeah! Robots kick ass!" type of opening.
I liked the episodes with Athrun's escape. Heaven's Base was cool but definitely stressed disbelief. It might've worked better if they'd shown even more of the overall battle than they did, so the menace of that many Destroy units in the same place would've been driven home. In any case, three Gundams taking them on is definitely a bit much, even though Destiny and Legend were on par with Freedom at a minimum. It was also a very anticlimatic end for Sting, although there wasn't much reason given to care about him anyway.

Oh these were dark times. Here I was then, dreaming against nightmares, hoping against the hopeless that the series may pick up once again into a sense of awesomeness. But no, not at all. Not at all.

Wings of Words is definately the best OP, it is made of pure win.
