View Full Version : Raymond Briggs' "The Snowman"
Is it just me, or does this Christmas special have the most depressing ending in Christmas special history?

Of course, no mention of "The Snowman" can be complete without this advert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfiqrkV_ZqI)

I used to have a VHS called Children's TV Favourites. It included The Snowman and episodes from several different British animated series.
On this VHS, The Snowman was edited so that it ended just after the Snowman waved goodbye and went back to being inanimate.

Tut tut tut. Most shocking.
I think a good chunk of The Snowman's appeal comes from how it captures the Christmas experience - there's the anticipation, there's the exuberant fun, and then it's all over.

Best ad ever.
And they took out the ending? That's not right at all.

Geez, that "Walking through the Air" song was damn creepy! I know it probably wasn't supposed to be, but for some reason it was. :ack:

Yeah the ending is a bit of a downer (although MAD magazine did a parody that was significantly happier). But what I think is sadder is that they flew all the way to the North Pole to see Santa Claus and all the kid got was a scarf!
The Irn Bru ad is hilarious though.

Raymond Briggs has always been something of a pessimist. You want proof try watching When The Wind Blows.

How could they edit out the ending? That is just unforgivable. The ending alone brought me to tears and I think is the reason for the appeal of The Snowman.

I finally rewatched this on youtube. It was still enjoyable and didn't make me think of switching the page. It was amazing animation for 1982. The ending was really sad and the orchestra really accented it. Though I really wanted the house scenes to end because the flying sequence was choice.
I really ROFL'd during the IRN BRU ad because the parody was dead on especially the parody song. Too bad, the special isn't here in the states again because it would reintroduce alot of people to this.

May I ask what the ending is?

I remember catching that depressing ending in my then five-year-old heart. I think I sat a good five minutes letting that reality sink in. I think that was one of my first major downers of my life, that Christmas special.

Well the ending of the Snowman really hits hard and makes a lasting effect on you, however the way I'm going to word it is simple
The next morning, the boy runs outside and discovers the snowman melted and finds the scarf in his pocket from the last night.

I've always enjoyed watching this special. It's definitely one of my all time favorites.

They had the nerve to edit the ending?! Dude, that's so not cool.
