They told us like 8 months ago that they were going to start releasing DVDs of One Piece in sets. Why has the first volume (I guess 144-157) not been given a date yet?

The first thing they're going to release is the Alabasta movie, and that comes out February 18th (I think).

That's interesting. I've been wondering the same thing about when FUNimation plans to release the first volume of their episodes for awhile too. I thought a video responce said that it would come out in December, but I guess that was wrong. Anyway, maybe they want to test the sales out with the movie. They'll probably make sure that its known as being uncut during promotions. I'll probably check it out too. Thanks for the information.

They said they're gonna announce something in January.

Whoa, they will make an announcement in Jan? If that is true, then they better do more than 13 episodes. How about sets by arc? After all, Skypia (wehre they will be starting apparently) is broken into 3 different arcs, I believe around 20 episodes each. There is no reason for them not to put them on the DVDs like that, especially if they plan to only do 2-3 volumes a year.

Well, they're trying to do a Naruto uncut approach (what with 13 episodes in three discs).

Let's see:
Jaya is 9 episodes.
Skypiea proper is 42 episodes.
The only real way you can split this up is with Upper Yard. But the pre-Upper Yard part is 7 episodes, with the Upper Yard part being 35 episodes. Not exactly optimal set releases.
The G8 filler arc is 11 episodes.
The Davy Back Fight arc is 13 episodes. (This one works perfectly)
The Ocean's dream filler arc is 7 episodes.
If we include the Aokiji encounter (2 episodes since it was originally the end of the Davy Back Fight arc in the manga) with Water Seven, it's 98 episodes.
Arc releases just don't make sense.

Wow, then they should do Skypia in two 26 episode sets, but no more than 3.

Water 7 is not 98 episodes. It is episdoes 229-284, is 55. Episodes 285-316 (??) is Enries Lobby.
I will agree though, the arcs would not make sense, but they need to do it where we aren't left off in the middle of a plotline for 8 months.

Would you be prepared to pay way more than the Naruto sets then? Because there's no way in hell FUNi's releasing a 26-episode boxset of One Piece for anywhere under $50.

That's what TV's for.

There is no Enies Loby arc. It is merely the second half of the Water Seven arc. Also, they show up in Enies Lobby in Episode 264, not 285.
And the Water Seven arc goes on until 325, although the last 10 episodes are mostly epilogue, with some filler tossed in.
Regardless, it is a 98 episode arc. It's one long storyline that lasted for 98 episodes.

*points at the DBZ "Remastered" boxsets, which each containing over 30 episodes.*

Don't most fans divide the 'World Government Saga' stuff into the DBF, Water Seven, and Enies Lobby 'arcs'?

Those episodes were being rereleased for like...the third time. Not to mention how old they are.

Upon hearing that, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to merge a few episodes for the TV and leave it uncut for the DVDs. I don't take I'd be able to take a 98-episode arc. That's nearly two years worth of episodes.

You think Viz charges $50 for the Naruto boxsets soley for the heck of it?
Also, if FUNi were to divide the series by arc, they'd do it similar to how they did it with DBZ, where they divided things up based on what's going on at the time (i.e. the Android Saga, the Fusion Saga, the Ginyu Saga, etc.).

That's stupid, to be honest. Japan has had it harder then we do (with like three episodes every so weeks before going on a hiatus) and by then we could very well be getting double premiers of One Piece which would cut it down to not even a year long arc (if we're lucky).

Davy Back Fight is a completely separate arc.
And separating Water Seven into two arcs is just silly. It's on continuous story, with the same villains, plot, and everything that starts out at the start doesn't get wrapped up until the end.
It's not like you can just claim it's a new story arc.

When it get to places like Wal-Mart and Overstock, they sell the Naruto and DBZ sets prices in half. For example at my town's Wal-Mart they have all the Naruto's sets for $24.95. While for DBZ it's 29.95. So expect places like that will be selling these a lot cheaper.

I suppose this sort of thing would be be left up to Oda to decide but I can see how the change in local would promt people to consider the arcs seperate arcs. At least it's still the same 'saga'. :p

Would these same people separate Arabasta into "Yuba", "Rain Base" and "Alubarna" arcs?
Water Seven, like Arabasta, is a continuing arc with a single running plotline and group of villains.
Separating it makes as much sense as separating Arabasta, or separating Arlong Park into "Cocoyashi Arc" and "Arlong Park Arc".

With Water 7 it's a bit different, since they're not actually in Water 7 anymore once they go to Eneis Lobby (though they're back afterwards). Kinda like with Jaya to Skypeia (although at least with those the villians are different).
To be frank, it's better to just call it the CP9 arc.
