Yay! I've already missed four chances to see this film in theaters, I'm not going to let it pass me by again. Hopefully people will ACTUALLY GO SEE IT.

Hopefully people will ACTUALLY GO SEE IT.

Hopefully people will actually be ABLE to see it. Tekkonkinkreet may be the second lowest-grossing animated film of all time according to boxofficemojo.com, but it also was shown in 2 theaters over the course of one week with no promotion whatsoever. Not exactly a formula for success.

I want to see this movie. Hopefully it will be a real release and not one of those "event" showings they're doing for a lot of other anime films.

Yes, but Tekkon Kinkreet never really had the potential to succeed beyond the art film crowd. Tokikake has appeal across nationalities, genders and generations. That the best Kadokawa could do for it was a tiny Bandai release is a sign of what a box office curse the words "big-budget anime" are (if not immediately followed with "by Hayao Miyazaki").

Cool. But what is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time about?

Quite literally what it sounds like, actually.

Very cool, though. I'm looking forward to seeing it if it comes nearby.

That is AWESOME news! I've seen TokiKake before at the kids' film festival at IFC, and it's a fantastic film. I'd love to see it again and hopefully it will have a great dub. The voice acting in the sub was really excellent, and it was actually done by teenagers around the characters' actual ages, which brought this realism to it.
Anyway, I'm super excited for this.

Oh look, another anime film that's not based on a popular kids franchise is getting a limited release in America at theaters/a theater in the major cities.

sigh......

Wish I could see it, but the only anime movie I can think of I'd leave the state to see in a theater is Mindgame. And that sure as hell isn't likely.

Ooh, excellent. I've heard that this flick is awesome, and even if I don't get to see it in theaters, there will very likely be a DVD release (if there isn't, your heads are mine, Bandai).

Exactly. There are more than enough anime fans in LA and New York to fill a couple of theaters. People just have to get off their asses and support the art!

We will... by renting it.

Sorry to disappoint, but they said it was a "limited theatrical release," and my impression was that it was going to be at most a short run in multiple cities. I could be wrong, since a lot of the details didn't sound like they were finalized, but it didn't sound like it was going to get a Paprika-style arthouse release.

They did say that there would be more details coming very soon, and that the DVD would be out next year as well.

Well I blame you, Ed. And the Swiss. Shifty-eyed timepiece fanatics.

Better than no release at all. Looks like I'm going back to the Landmark. They're usually pretty good about getting these films. Granted, they're screens aren't exactly IMAX size, but it's still a real theater, and it's not drowning in adds like AMC/Regal/Muvico/Etc.

"Time, time, what is time? Swiss manufacture it; French hoard it; Italians squander it; the Americans say it is money; the Hindus say it does not exist. You know what I say? I say time is a crook!" -- Julius O'Hara (Peter Lorre), Beat the Devil (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046414/)

Sorry, OT, but a quote that always pops up in my brain when the words "time" and "Swiss" appear ...

On topic? Ummm... The chances I'll be able to catch this movie are virtually nil, and the enthusiasm for it from folks I respect is making me resent that near-certain fact ...

Yeah, I wouldn't expect more than a drop of distribution. That theater Viz bought into in San Francisco will probably show it though.

If it came to seattle, I'd have 20 otaku in toe to see it. An easy 200 bucks for Bandai.

Alas, Seattle, inspite of having quite a large anime fandom and a vibrant Asian-American community, typically is lucky to get one week arthouse runs of stuff like this.

/So damn glad he saw 5cm at AX, cause he missed it in Seattle.

Considering Portland got Escaflowne for all of 1 single weekend, I'd completely agree.

Better than no release at all.

Wouldn't make any difference.
To me, anyway.

But hey, those that CAN see it, should.

Hmm... LA weekend otaku house party? What good is having all this space if I don't use it? That is, assuming I'm not doing a tour when it comes out. :P

The Escaflowne movie played in Vancouver, so hopefully we'll get this as well.

This makes this bold assumption that I have money to fly out to places with. After all the jet-setting nonsense I did last year (8 conventions, 5 of which required travel, 3 of which required flights,) I'm not that hot on travel for nerd events. I guess if I have other business to attend to in LA though when it hits, that sounds like a great plan. Once we get an ETA for the film, maybe I can "confirm or deny" as ADV might say.

Of course, if does play in Vancouver, it'd probably be a sweet flick to catch with my girlfriend.

For anyone in the DC metro area or close by, I would think there's a decent chance this would get shown during the Cherry Blossom festival in the spring. Perhaps not, but there's always a big film event or two as a part of the activities.

This is true. And the Kennedy Center is doing a big Japan-centric thing in February. Could be there to. GW, you're around DC to? Cool!
