This is distrubing.
my only hope is that AS takes no heat for this.
its only a matter of time before the pope points his objecting gaze towards Death Note.

Phew....posted November 21? Then the media won't blow it into a circus and ban the anime, because they didn't when it was fresh, and even if they found this story now, a notebook emulating a Japanese cartoon vs. a massacre that actually happened kind of puts it in perspective.

Since the story is over two weeks old, it's not likely to get a lot of attention now, unless some crusader in the Fourth Estate decides to resurrect it because of contextual similarities to the latest high school massacre. It's possible that the student who did this was just letting off some steam, but it's equally likely that the people who names were written in the book are lucky the guy was discovered before he got the bright idea of acting on his impulses. He's probably locked away someplace where he'll be slowly transformed, through patience, couseling and constant monitoring, from a lonely, disaffected head case into a full-blown psychotic.
Oddly enough, this story got very little coverage outside of the anime press and local Richmond sources. Probably because nobody ended up dead. The non-anime portion of the press coverage makes practically no mention of the series or manga, so I expect the blowback to Viz or The Cartoon Network will be negligable. The people in the mainstream press just didn't make the connection, other than some mention of the fansite that offers the "virtual Death Note".

Well, anyway, didn't this raise a stink in China some years back? It is my observation that young teens like the power trip Light gets.
I'm kinda glad this seems to have blown over in the mass media because you just know there'd be a particular issue with these: http://www.tokyotoys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2547

It's not surprising that some disaffected kids might latch onto the Death Note concept and write their own. Trying to take any further steps is a whole 'nother story, of course, and thankfully this guy didn't.
In the meantime...

Yeah, it's really weird that they didn't mention the anime or manga at all in the news story. Those news reporters must not be doing their homework. Too bad, Death Note could have used some free publicity.

Virginian Teen Suspended over Names in 'Death Note'
The Franklin Military Academy in Richmond, Virginia suspended a senior this week for reportedly having a list of his classmates' names in a book called "Death Note (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=4354)," a reference to the Japanese suspense manga and anime of the same name. Takeshi Obata (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=5766) and Tsugumi Ooba (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=30361) created this story about a boy who finds a notebook (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-11-22/virginian-teen-suspended-over-names-in-death-note#) with which he can put people to death by writing their names. NBC12, the NBC affiliate in central Virginia, quotes (http://www.nbc12.com/news/state/11719876.html) a student at the public high school who said that she is friends with the suspended senior and that she was not on the list. The suspended student's friend said that neither she, nor her friends who were actually on the list, fear the suspended student.
According to NBC12, the school's principal wrote a letter to the parents of the school's children. In the letter, he explained Death Note's premise by pointing out a Death Note website (http://www.deathnoteonline.com/). This website, which has no official Death Note affiliation, allows visitors to enter names of people and the fictional circumstances in which they would "die."
Death Note has been the subject of scrutiny by schools in other countries such as China and Taiwan. School officials in the Chinese city of Shenyang have banned (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2005-02-06/death-note-stirs-controversy-in-china) the manga and replicas of the Death Note notebook, and the educational bureau in Taiwan's Pingtung County warned (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-10-12/taiwanese-county-warns-of-death-note-others-defend-it) parents about it. On the other hand, the manga's Taiwanese publisher and a non-profit Taiwanese watchdog group supported the work for raising issues, and a Washington state librarians' group nominated (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-10-09/librarians-nominate-death-note-for-book-award) it for a young adults' book award. Two messages left (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-10-01/notes-left-near-bodies-in-belgium-linked-to-death-note) in a Belgian crime scene have been associated with Death Note, but police in that case have yet to identify a suspect or any further link to the manga.
Thank you to chrono jr for the news tip.

Heh. i love that one so much. I don't know why, but it cracks me the hell up every time. Debu note. Now that's something I'd love to see a real life version of. Just to see a 400 pound Paris Hilton waddling around and losing her popularity.
Anyway...

A lot of horribly depressed kids in high school get bullied to no extent. I aways wondered why having a sadistic nature to torture someone until they snap is considered a healthy life path, but that's not me. All they are doing is creating these frankenstines, and then running to them with torches when they start to get out of control.
In short, it's a 2 way street. On the one hand, yes... the kid had no grasp on reality, and did something psychotic. But on the other hand, someone has the will to tear someone's life down just so they can get a cheap laugh out of it. Both of them have terrible problems if you ask me.

I hope no one gets mad at me about saying this but, it's not something to be taking likely. This kid could have mental problems or anger issues and actually attempt to kill some of his classmates. Just because the show is entertaining does not mean it's sending out the right message to people. Death is not something to laugh at.

Yes, writing the names of one's classmates in the book is certainly worthy of attention. I mean, it would be different if he wrote the names of, say, boy band singers or politicians in the book; then it would be just a goof. But filling it with people you know could be a warning sign (the reports don't say if he went to the next logical step and described how and when they die - that would have been a real alarm bell). Fortunately, it doesn't look like school authorities swept it under the rug and decided to investigate. It could be nothing, but better safe than sorry.

Yeah, back at school some 8 years ago we had a couple clown make a "hit list" and come to school wearing trenchcoats. Sure, they got suspended for a week. So am I now suppose to consider myself lucky I wasn't killed in some massacre? They were just making a very tasteless joke, and I'm sure this guy was doing the same, or at least venting his anger in a nonviolent way. I don't think this story really deserved any news coverage.

It's always harmless until they shoot up the school. There's warning signs before all the school shootings, but they always go unnoticed.

Once again, like the bullying.
But hey, as long as we can keep blaming the media, the parents and the bullies can get off scott free.

Schools in this country often go WAY too far with the Zero Tolerance policy (a friend of mine got expelled for an unbelievably stupid reason because of it). And blaming the media is far too common, too. But I think this school took appropriate action here. Remember that this story took place in Virginia. The Virginia Tech tragedy is probably still fresh in everybody's mind there and the school administrators couldn't afford to take any chances. If I were a teacher and I saw that boy writing the names of students and teachers in something called a "Death Note", I would have hauled him in, too. Better safe than sorry.

Quiet and a loner, why does that sound so familiar? Hmmmmm... Oh yeah! That sounds like me in school! So of course he was bullied, I should know. :(

So what if he was bullied? He still deserves to be punished for being dumb enough to whip that "Death Note" out at school where any teacher or student could see it. School administrators can't be too careful with stuff like this (and I'll bet teachers in Virginia are especially paranoid about this kind of thing).
And FYI, I was quiet and somewhat of a loner in school and I didn't have problems with bullies. So being quiet doesn't always equal getting mercilessly teased by jocks.
