Didn't we do a thread like this a while back?

Wall-E looks amazing. It, The Dark Night, and Half-Blood Prince are the only truly safe bets for the next year. I'll just wait and see on Cloverfield, Speed Racer, Indiana Jones 4, Iron Man, etc.

Genuinely looking forward to? Gee, probably only WALL-E, The Dark Night and Bond 22.

Hopefully Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Half-Blood Prince will be good too.

God only knows what Star Trek will be like...

And here's hoping that Disney will bring out Ponyo on a Cliff before the end of the year.

No question: The Dark Knight. The others are just gravy if they turn out good.

Ones I'm looking forward to:

* Rambo
* Iron Man
* Valkyrie
* X-Files 2
* The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
* Punisher: War Zone
* Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
* The Day the Earth Stood Still (yes)
* The Pineapple Express (only because Huey Lewis and the News are doing the theme song)

But the absolute #1 movie I am most-anticipating above all the rest...

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull :sweat:

QFT! I have been waiting for this for years. I wanna go on opening day!

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

There's a new Mummy movie coming out? I did not know that, I wonder why I have not heard about it?

QFT! I have been waiting for this for years. I wanna go on opening day!

Oh yeah! May 22 is a Thursday, odd choice for an opening, but if it's one of those 11:59PM showings, I'm going. If my family doesn't want to, then I'll just go myself and they can see it later. I'm hoping this will break my record for most repeated viewings in a theater, which is currently set at 5 thanks to The Mummy. Speaking of which.....

There's a new Mummy movie coming out? I did not know that, I wonder why I have not heard about it?

Yup. I believe shooting just wrapped a couple weeks ago. Sommers is only producing, with Rob Cohen directing. Sadly, only Brendan Fraser and John Hannah are back. The son is recast (since the film is now post-WWII and he's older), Rachel Weisz was busy and has been recast, Jet Li is the new mummy (since China has mummies, too), and Oded Fehr is out since Ardeth is in Africa and this one's in China. Still, photos and set reports have been promising so far, IMO.

EDIT: By the way, great sig quotes. Love Christmas Vacation. "You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant." :D

Saw 5 is #1 priority for me.

Wall-E is another favorite.

Repo! The Genetic Opera

Cloverfield maybe.

Other movies that have my 50/50 attention (maybe I will, maybe I won't): The Eye, Run, Fat Boy, Run, Dragonball, Deathrace, and Zach and Miri Make a Porno.

While there are quite a few films I'm interested in seeing, the only one that'll make me actually go to the theatre itself is Star Trek. Either it's going to be really good and be the start of something wonderful or it'll kill off the franchise once and for all...

#3 "Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Hopefully this tops "The Last Crusade" which is my favourite of the trilogy.
#4 "The Incredible Hulk": I want to see the new version.
#5 "Hellboy 2" : I liked the first one.

So Evie is being played by a new actress? That doesn't sound good, I really like Rachel Weisz, hope the replacement is just as good. And it sounds wierd that its taking place in China. hmmmm and without Oded Fehr, he couldn't come along for the ride I see. Yeah I'm gonna have to see previews for this before I make any more judgement.:shrug:

The new Evie is Maria Bello, whom I do like. I saw a picture of her in-character, and she looked pretty good, like the filmmakers tried to recapture "the look" of Evie as best they could. I think she'll prove okay, but Weisz coming back would have been best. For a long time she was saying she wasn't interested, then she started saying she was. In the end, a schedule conflict forced her out. :( I'll miss the chemistry between her and Brendan Fraser.

I'm kinda worried about how the lack of returning cast could affect the returning audience. Even if there are believable explanations for why Imhotep and Ardeth Bay can't come back, audiences may just see the presence of only Fraser and Hannah and take it as a sign the others didn't like the script enough to return.

But I think things could still turn out okay. I don't have a problem with a China setting (can't wait to see the Yeti battle) or a new mummy. You can only do so much with Imhotep, and like I said, Egypt's not the only place with mummies. :) Also can't wait to see the battle with the Terracotta Army. :sweat:

Number one on my list to see is George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead due out in February. He showed he can still make the best horror movies out there with his return to form in 2005's Land of the Dead. The concept of Diary sounds interesting, like zombies mixed with the Blair Witch Project. The reaction from critics so far has been lukewarm, but hey, it's Romero and Zombies. There's no way that can go wrong.

Also anticipating Saw 5, the new Mummy movie, Punisher: War Zone, and Cloverfield. Oh, and I'll of course see DBZ if it comes out next year.

Batman: The Dark Knight

Hanshotfirst113
12-08-2007, 07:35 PM
Actually, Sweeny Todd is technically a 2007 movie, by about a week or two.

While I'm wondering if Marc Forester will be up to the task, I'm definately thrilled to see where Craig and the gang will take Bond for his next outing. They've got big shoes to fill; Casino Royale was the best the franchise has offered in a good decade, at least.

The Dark Knight: Haven't been this amped for a stuio release in years, and is coming from someone cynical about much Hollywood's output today.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Wasn't too enamoured of Yates' last outing, finding it a comedown and after Cuaron and Newell finally stared getting things right, but all the same, it'll be great to watch the cast and the production design and effects again. None of the HP films so far have been as good as the books or belong in the higher eschalon of cinematic greatness by any means, but they've all been entertaining enough. Hopefully this one will follow suit. PLEASE cut out the annoying "get the memory from Slughorn!" subplot though, guys. I'll love you forever.

Iron Man: After the trailer, my initially cynical opinions have risen considerably.

After the mediocre Land, I think that the King has lost his touch; Romero's Diary will have to be bloody good. Still, it'll be worthwhile all the same; even Romero's weaker outings are usually sufucied with a social significance that vastly outstrips 99% of genre work these days.

Personally, I think the filmmakers will need to make substantial changes to the pacing and plotting of the story in order to make this movie palatable on screen. Having the first forty-five or sixty minutes go by without a single action sequence would be, quite frankly, deadly. (If Spider-Man 3 taught us anything is that prolonged romantic angst really doesn't have much place in a blockbuster film.)

Order was mostly filler; Prince has lots of important info, but the plot is most expository explanations and backstory; hardly anything goes down short of the cave sequence (which I have this awesome horror-movieish vision) and the Hogwarts stuff. They're going to have to be clever, especially since the plot and expanations have NOT been handled well in the films so far and are hard to handle in films; I wouldn't mourn much if the Ron/Herminoe romance was cut down (not saying that it should be excised, but as it wasn't particularly well-written in the book, I won't much miss it); the job done on the Harry/Cho relationship was also not handled well (especially since, if they'd had a lick of sense, they'd have removed it altogether since it was pointless in the book and other, far more important stuff should have been included and paced differently). Of course, slavish faithfulness has been the biggest detriment to almost all of the Potter films so far; if they'd just deviate from the text WELL, this could be interesting...

Though I'm far more interested in who'll direct Hallows...

Completely self-indulgent rant: Am I the only one who thinks that the franchise would have been served better if they'd actually hired directors with strong visual sensibilites? Like Ridley Scott, Terry Gilliam, Jean-Pierre Junet, Tim Burton, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, hell, maybe Nicholas Roeg?

Of all the movies, I look forward to seeing Wall-E the most.

I'm gonna see the Harry Potter movie, since I've bothered to see the other five.

I'll try to see Indiana Jones film, just because I love the adventures he goes on.

I'll see the Incredible Hulk, just to see how it compares to the Ang Lee's version (which I enjoyed).

I'd like to see Dragonball Z, to see what it's like. Usually I hate DBZ because of its slow pace, but an American action movie can't be like that, right?

The zombie had never looked so awesome, but I'll agree that it's the weakest in the series. The only real problem I had with it was the goofy ending, I was hoping for something a little more depressing/sad, seeing as we already had a goofy ending in the otherwise fantastic Day of the Dead.

Iron Man: After the trailer, my initially cynical opinions have risen considerably.

Normally I'm not this petty, but... I told you so!

As for myself:

Hellboy II: The Golden Army-Hmm... Ron Perlman, Guillermo del Toro, more creatures than you can shake a stick at, and DANNY ELFMAN? Sold.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull-Um, duh. You'd have to be ridiculously cynical to not be excited about this.

Iron Man-My expectations for this movie peaked the moment Stan Winston and ILM's involvement was announced. And the trailer rules.

Speed Racer-Me, prior to trailer: "Eh, could be good, could be crap." After trailer: "Um, that was utterly insane... Sign me up!" This just looks like a lot of candy-coated fun, and I'm beginning to think that the oddly low-res CG may be on purpose.

The Dark Knight: Hmmm, Batman Begins ruled, Heath Ledger is looking and sounding good as the Joker so far judging by pics and the teaser trailer, Aaron Eckhart will probably be awesome as usual as Harvey Dent, and I'm loving Bats' upgraded suit and the Batpod motorcycle... what's not to like?

Wall-E looks spectacular. I think it could be Pixar's best movie to date, as its going to rely so much on the animation and visuals and not nearly as much on dialog or 'celebrity' voices, which sounds wonderful to me. :p

It's the Year of the Superhero at the top of the list for me: The Dark Knight, which hopefully will live up to the fine legacy of the only good live-action Batman movie ever (for my money), Batman Begins, and Iron Man, which actually looks like it might very well displace the Spider-Man franchise for the title of film that most fully translates its comic book model into live action.

After that, Star Trek should be interesting, with young Kirk and Spock.

Indiana Jones, which hopefully is a worthy addition to a fine action film series.

I'll see Speed Racer and likely enjoy it on at least some level --- although I can't tell right now if it will be the pleasure of seeing the live-action film skillfully evoke some of the eccentric charms of the cartoon (which, in the same category as Scooby-Doo and Land of the Lost, probably holds appeal for me more on the basis of nostalgia than quality) or the morbid fascination that one experiences in watching a trainwreck unfold before your eyes.

That first clip was funny. "Who said action?" "That was scary." Haha!! So was Krueger doing her own driving there? Damn! Looks and car stunt driving skills. :sweat: :D

A couple weeks ago USA showed some sneak peaks during a showing of the first film (one where Cage and Krueger sneak into the Queen's office and one where the three are pursued by Ed Harris and his baddies), and they were pretty sweet. Can't wait for this!

Wha!?! Just about everything about The Incredibles I loved. The best CGI animation of humans ever done, kickass fight sequences, the most powerful implementation of Brad Bird's "talented outcast" theme so far, actual character development, a brilliant villain backstory, a baby transforming into a flaming devil, Edna Mode, Samuel F***ing L. Jackson, what more did you want? Poop jokes? Cute talking animals? Cute talking animals eating each other's poop? Sorry, I don't see how The Incredibles is anything less than a classic. If you can elaborate on your thoughts, I'd love to hear. Maybe I'll understand better.

I had no problems with the cast or animation quality (Pixar films are all certainly nice to look at), and I'm glad they typically veer away from poop jokes and the like. But I just found the overall film incredibly dull. I was bored for almost the entire film waiting for something interesting to happen, and only during the final battle did I think it showed any signs of life, but then it was all over and done with so quickly. I remember thinking, "What? That's it? All this build-up and that's all we get for the final battle?" I also thought the film was way too long, though a faster-paced story might have helped that problem. I remember having some other complaints, but since I haven't watched it again since my initial viewing, I've forgotten what they are.

And I see my mom actually about Ratatoulle or however it's spelled (I thought she just brought the demo copy home from work to watch), so maybe I'll give it a look, out of curiosity than anything else. She and my dad liked it, though not as much as Toy Story and a couple of the others.

I remember having some other complaints, but since I haven't watched it again since my initial viewing, I've forgotten what they are.

Hmm, I take it you aren't fond of The Seven Samurai or other long more character and setting-driven action films as well.

I was never once bored by the movie. The whole thing was clever at the least, and certain scenes (the capes montage, Dash in the jungle) were masterpieces.

Hey, now. Let's not insult tastes here. I know from discussing with him on other threads that he loves Die Hard and the Indiana Jones trilogy, both of which have healthy amounts of character and setting-driven action (they're also either the same length or not much longer than The Incredibles).

I've never seen The Seven Samurai. I know, I know, shame on me. But I've always wanted to. :)

I don't mind character-driven films as long as the story itself stills holds my interest, but in the case of The Incredibles, I'm afraid it just didn't.

Just about everything. Which was a shame, too, because I was really excited to see it from the ads and the great teaser trailer with Mr. Incredible trying to fit back into his old costume. I'd have to rank it as one of the biggest movie-going disappointments I've ever had. :sad:

Yeah, I thought that The Incredible was everything that mos Hollywood blockbusters which that they could be. Spielberg hasn't shot an action sequence as exciting in years, or a movie as good, for that matter IMO. The satire, the endlessly inventive animation, I could go on and one. James Bond, the X-Men, and Indiana Jones all rolled into one.

Seven Samurai is a slightly different creature, to be fair. Granted,I'm a big Kurosawa fan...

And Edna is hilarious.

Isn't a live action adaption of American McGee's Alice is supposed to be coming out sometime in 2008?
