View Full Version : How much sense does it make to show the Balto sequal on T.V before video release?

I was wondering about this just recently, and it don't add up for me. Wouldn't they be loosing money, I mean someone could just tape it and then just say "the heck with the video" right?

Of course, there's the opposite reaction if they did it the other way around: "Why should I watch it on TV, I've already got it on tape."

They'll make more money on the TV ads for sure but video sales would go down since if someone wants it they could just trade tapes with someone that recorded it, I don't think there are too many Balto fans that just have to have the offical tape in their collection.

How many little kids and their parents tape things? And what mom is going to reach for it in Wal-Mart, stop and say "but I can tape it off Cartoon Network".... The savvy fan/consumer is of little consequence. Whether the 20 bucks comes from a video sale, or a viewing partially paid with cable fees and watching commercials... The CN showing might even be considered a lead-in, akin to a theatre release.

a) The parents that are animation fans, we can reproduce you know ;)
b) Scrooge like parents that will get it for a cheap as possible
They won't pay for it when they can get a tape the airing of it for free.

They tend to air those Scooby DTVs that come out once a year a little while after they go to video. I wouldn't be surprised if they found out that airing those increased the video sales and decided to use a similar strategy with Balto.
Psycho Fox--good point, but unfortunately animation fans do not make up the majority of the U.S. population, or probably even the considering-buying-Balto-video-tape-population. *sigh* ;)
Most likely the strategy is, show the movie to the kiddies, make them love it, wait until they see it while shopping with Mommy and cry until they get it.

I just found it a little odd that they're having one sequel in the theaters, have one airing on tv and releasing it immediately on VHS and DVD, and yet another just direct to VHS and DVD without showing it on tv. I suppose that out of Balto, Cinderella and Peter Pan, they figured that they could make the most money with showing PP on the big screen. And that people would be most anxious to see a Cinderella sequel instead of a Balto one, and so they want to keep people anxious, not show it on tv, so that they'll have to rent or buy it in order to see it. And after sitting through Balto II, and knowing that it sucks, I can tell why they showed it on tv.

Er...well, Balto isn't Disney while the other two are. But your point still stands. If they were smarter, they might've decided to release Balto later to avoid competition with Cindy 2. Nowadays it seems like Disney is releasing DTVs and DVDs of their "classic" films almost constantly though.

--no parent wants to pay for crap on VHS/DVD, so the CN viewing will be "Is this worth my money?" If it is, set the VCR during the second Sunday a.m. showing, if one is a cerebral parent. Though those hoping for extras on the retail version--as well as no commercials and less edits--may decide to cough up the money for the store tape.
That'd be my reasoning behind buying Daria eps and both movies, hoping for extras like the unaired "Sealed With A Kick" pilot are included. Admittedly when a show is great you think it'll last and take it for granted, thinking it'll be there forever, then you want to kick yourself when the plug is pulled and you hope desperately someone out there has copies available....
