Talkback 1 (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=181804)
Figured it's time to put up a next thread, so without further ado:
Goin take you back to the past...
He has pens/markers in his pockets. He is armed with a Power Glove. He drinks the beer known as Rolling Rock. His profanity makes sailors seem like saints in comparison. He plays Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, The Virtual Boy. Even has The Atari (2600 and 5200).
He's James Rolfe/The Angry Video Game Nerd!
Note: To enjoy his videos, you need to keep in mind that his reviews are more of a satrical humor. Yes, some gripes about the game are geniune, that doesn't mean he outright hates the game.
Comments?
Damn, that DVD sold out fast, didn't it?

Extra warning this time: that zombie clip is super gross.
I know there's no chance he would have thought of anyone from Disney, but I want Jafar on that list....because not only is he evil and twisted, but from the climax of Movie #1 to his demise at the end of #2 there was no way to beat him. Except verbally; Aladdin had to talk him into a trap (which ended up making him MORE powerful).
Scar is also a good one, for the opposite reason. He said himself that he'd definitely lose in a fight against his brother, so instead he used some cunning psychology to con the heroes into defeating themselves. Perhaps the slickest villain ever. It was fitting that his mouth also got him killed in the end.

Interesting it starts off from the Captain S crossover, I guess the non-canonical part refers to just Captain S.

I did, nice move, especially replacing Disney characters with Nintendo characters(plus Heat Man from Mega Man 2).
Funny how I watched Mickey's Christmas Carol just before watching this.

There's a poll for fans to vote on games they want to see James rip apart. Right now it's a prototype, but they're working on getting every game ever on the list so anyone can vote for anything. It'll help James get a good idea on what games to review.
Check it out here. (http://www.laisteve66.com/poll/index.php)

Well just be thankful that this movie hasn't been turned into a video game (Yet). Else the AVGN would say the exact same thing (If not worse), as he did of the movie:
AVGN : Yes folks it's a New video game based on that infamous 1964 film, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, for the Nintendo Wii, and I decided to try it. And how do I feel about this game? Well I would say, What (BLEEP)ing piece of (BLEEP) is this (BLEEP)??!!! It sucks (BLEEP BLEEP!) Frankly I wouldn't give this game to a kid from Mars, even if there were kids from Mars wanting Santa to give this to them! What a Piece of (BLEEP!) You even die in the first five seconds of the game as the Robot Crushes you! What a load of (BLEEP)!
heh see told you the video game would suck. Just as much as the movie, if not more so. Time to break out "The tickle rays!"

Personally, I think James could try a back to school special next September and go for as many educational games as he can.
Loved it. Great inclusion of Handsome Tom and Stuttering Craig, good review of Shaq Fu, and loved seeing old man Angry Video Game Nerd, ripping Wii games a new hole. I also loved the videos of James as a kid. We saw him play the NES for the first time already, but plenty of old stuff we haven't seen before too. I loved him trying to figure out how to get past the wall and the "Yikes! I'm not going down there!" And wow, I guess he's always been a nerd. Anyone who says "My first 16-bit system!" after getting an SNES has GOT to be a nerd.
It was great how he tried to play a good game but just wasn't able to do it as well. I think it's safe to assume the next video will be on the Virtual Boy.

I wish he'd review Gameboy Advanced games sometime. Particularly Boktai.
I haven't finished that game in two years, due to it being horribly, laughably impractical. The graphics were nice, the game seemed to have a plot, but I wouldn't know how that worked out, since:
1) I don't have a solar lamp of any kind
2) Currently I can't play it outside because it is both night and winter
3) Sitting next to a window in the daytime does jack.
Honestly has anyone ever beaten that game?

Until something else comes along that's as godawful as Superman 64, it will continue to claim that spot. However, if GoldenEye: Rogue Agent had been just a little worse, it might be able to fight it out.
I remember back at the end of the NES/Super NES era, the Nintendo Power reviewers started being more honest about the games. I remember one saying that Bullwinkle in the Rocky & Bullwinkle game on the NES had all the control response of a dead mouse, or something to that effect. Then there was that Super NES game, Pac-World, or something or other, where you had to control Pac-Man by firing at him and objects with a slingshot. One reviewer said, and I quote, "Pac-Man has the IQ of a sign post."
However, one game that may be able to challenge Superman 64 in pure suckage is this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_a_Dinosaur
[EDIT]-Found the Pac-Man one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man_2:_The_New_Adventures
[EDIT]-Found the Pac-Man one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man_2:_The_New_Adventures
I bought a Genesis for 11 bucks a few years ago that came with that game. The kid I babysat a few years ago had it on the Super Nintendo. My local comic book shop has had a copy of it for sale for as long as I can remember. I also see it at swap meets all the time.
That game apparently stalks me. I wish he'd do that one, now.

I don't the poll is a stupid idea at all. Sure, ET is overdone and Superman 64, while not nearly as played to death as ET, is also pretty overused, there are plenty of games ranking high on that last that haven't been overdone.
Hey You, Pikachu? The Three Stooges? Home Improvement? I'd love to see him tear apart all these games and more.
Besides, just because a game has a ton of votes or little to no votes doesn't necessarily mean James will or will not cover it. I have a feeling he's never going to do a review of ET.
I'm personally hoping to see a review on Eek! the Cat sometime in the future.
Hey You, Pikachu? The Three Stooges? Home Improvement? I'd love to see him tear apart all these games and more.
Sure, the second two are fine, but Hey You Pikachu is an example of a game that everyone already knows is bad. I could understand Pokemon Channel, (which is the sequel that nobody's heard of. It's a video game about watching television >_< He doesn't do Gamecube games, anyway, so it's a moot point) but HYP has already been attacked into the ground.
Not as much as Superman 64 and ET, but it's still been done to death.

I don't think those clips really represent the AVGN too well, but no the AVGN is still very fresh IMO. I am glad he doesn't just rant about the video game, if that were the case his video's would have already become boring/more of the same. But he keeps it fresh by adding all kinds of interesting things to the video to keep it entertaining, he still does a "classic" only rants reviews when he wants to take a break from all the hard work the others take but IMO those aren't as funny anymore.

I don't mind Zelda "prequels", but they really do need to get organized and make it clear just where each Zelda game actually belongs in the time line. It started getting confusing after Majora's Mask to me.

Well, the general consensus is that the Link from OoT and MM never returned from the land of Termina, hence WW's assertion at the exposition that Link left on a journey and never returned, allowing Ganon to take over. If you play through WW a second time with the "new" outfit, all the characters that speak ancient Hylian now speak English, and Jabu-Jabu makes a comment about this Link NOT being the original Hero of Time.
Personally, I think it works kind of like the Breath of Fire series, where every time the world is in great peril, a member of the Dragon Clan emerges to fight the evil.

Frankly, I was a little disappointed with Twilight Princess, seeing as how I was the only one aware of just who Ganondorf and Zelda are, and Link was totally clueless, being yet another Link rookie.
Seeing similar words, and fighting similar enemies, on a quest to defeat a recurring foe, just doesn't feel as dramatic or enticing when the lead hero doesn't know who it is.
If we could get a true sequel, featuring the SAME Link from a previous game....

That's why The Legend of Zelda, as much as the Star Wars movies, are based in part on the book by Jospeh Campbell The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Link starts off almost every game as a virtual nobody who has destiny thrust upon him. That's the appeal of the character. You don't have to be royalty, or rich, or powerful to emphathize with Link. You just have to be able to see yourself as going on a grand quest.
That's why Miyamoto will probably go down as the most notable genius in video game history. I'll bet one day his hame will carry the same reverence that Mozart and Plato and Aristotle does.

The funniest part was his dumbfounded reaction to the glitch that brought him back to the start of the game. Also the part about crossing the bridge was hilarious.
I must say I like it when he reviews multiple games with the same name. Kinda like what he did for the Addams Family and Ghostbusters reviews. It shows what different games were like on other platforms, and the positives/negatives compared to the main attraction.
I can't believe I forgot to mention it, but they "you shoot him and he turns into a frog" part was hysterical.
I loved the "Who does he think he is? Jesus Christ?" line. Yeah, he took it from a previous video (forgot which one), but it's still hilarious as hell.

I liked his reference to his "Chronologically Confused" video since I bought the DVD when it first came out, and he updated it saying that his sarcastic remark became true. Then he went back and said that it was retitled just Rambo. I do agree that calling the next movie "Rambo" could sound like it's a remake of anyone of them. Also even though I liked the conversation with him saying no, and leading into a situation where the only way to stop it was just funny. It reminded me of a certain scene in Psychonauts, though it was funnier is Psychonauts.

^ James has a point about how going into a movie without a mass of hype can be a good thing, as you watch it without going in thinking "Greatest Movie Ever!" and being disappointed that it didn't live up to massive expectations.
I'm also glad he gave a brief synopsis of the first three Rambo films. I'm a bit ashamed to admit, I haven't actually seen the films themselves, despite laughing at all those spoofs for years. I got mine the christmas after it came out and it was pretty cool. The 3D effects were awesome. The games were mostly ok like James mentions but Wario Land was great and Mario Clash was a great 3D remake of Mario Bros.
Wow, I knew the VB sucked and failed, but I didn't know it sucked and failed THAT much. I mean, no headstrap? How could they completely miss that?

Apparently youtube deemed it mature enough to warrent a rating, but James has put up episode 3 of ***pickle. I will admit the bit with the pickle in the theater, annoying people around him with his constant muttering of his own name, was all right. But the rest... (especially the finale with his family) I hate to use this cliched expression, but I felt like I was losing brain cells watching it.

I would like to see his next console review on either the Atari Jaguar, the Sega Saturn (well, theres not alot to say bad about that system, probably just some games though),the 3DO, the Turbo Grafx 16, the Neo Geo, or the Commodore 64...
The TG16 and Neo Geo and 3DO werent BAD systems really, they just werent able to compete on a wide scale with the big 2 (sega and nintendo). And the C64 is a home computer, not a game system (though he should review bad PC games like Tekwar and Brain Dead 13).

That was hilarious. Loved the inclusion of the Cowardly Lion and I couldn't stop laughing at all the little comments he was making in the background and when he ran off and just randomly exploded.
And that game looks awful, good lord. I wasn't even aware a Wizard of Oz game existed, let alone one for the SNES.

James didn't mention it in the review, but The Wizard of Oz also holds the distinction of having one of the worst SNES soundtracks ever. It's like all the songs used only three instruments: A generic piano, a recorder, and a violin-style thing, and all the tunes sound dreary. Just listen to its arrangements of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Yellow Brick Road"- just awful.

Personally, I think this was one of his weaker ones. Especially the ending with another "game getting crapped on" gag. The lion was probably the highlight. (Though he was more of a doped up lion than a cowardly lion)

Probably the worst video in awhile, it seemed kind of erratic/rushed. But it did have it's moments like the spastic lion's antics and pointing out that after almost 50 reviews he still talks about DJ&MH.
Classic Speedy

I do agree it was one of the weaker AVGN videos, mainly because it wasn't particularly funny. And unlike some here, I didn't find most of the lion's antics amusing; he had a few funny moments, but mostly he reminded me of a certain fecal pickle, talking in-between James's words.
That said, I still enjoyed it because even when James isn't funny he does a good job of tearing apart a bad game's flaws, and I thought he did the same here. The super precise platform jumping, the difficulty determining what's a background object and what's something you can jump on, the uselessness to the non-Dorothy characters, the inability to jump down to a lower platform, good stuff.
Oh lord, that jumping glitch has got to be the second worst glitch in the history of video games.
Not as good as most videos but still funny. The clock punching James was my favorite part.

The theme montage was good, too bad the only AVGN one to show up as a custom song on Guitar Hero 2 was the Spider-Man theme. I'd like to see somebody do the AVGN theme on GH.
After so many AVGN video's and countless clones/rip offs it makes newer videos not as funny as they once were since the novelty wore off. That is why I like it when James has a special guest or gimmick in his video and actually does something more complex.
I loved the Lion he was so different than past guests and made the review fun.

Now that over 40 AVGN videos are out (not counting brief things like YKWBS, quickie movie reviews, and Top Ten lists), what are your favorites?
Here are mine:
1) TMNT 3 movie review: As I've stated a couple times, this is one of the best things I've watched on the internet. He does a fantastic job of building up why TMNT 3 was such an anticipated title among the fanbase, and why it failed. It helped that I agreed with him on virtually all points, but it's also an entertaining video with some great lines. And it was so epic it needed 20 minutes. :D
2) Silver Surfer: He does a great job showing how freaking hard this game is, with analogies like trying to go through a maze while he pulls the paper left, the die montage, and pausing to showcase dead zones. Good stuff.
3) Sega 32X: James has some great rants in this one, like the mess of cords needed to run it, the lack of end labels on the cartridges, the double-size ends, and downloading a move list off the internet just to enjoy Primal Rage.
4) Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout: James has some hilarious and extreme facial expressions in this video. And the Bugs Bunny beatings were funny.
5) Double Dragon 3: This was the first AVGN video I ever saw (at the time called ANN) and it got me hooked. James did a great job of describing why DD3 was such a letdown, especially compared to Double Dragon 1 and 2 (2 especially). I was completely in agreement on all his points, especially about the needlessly hard difficulty level.
6) Sega CD: Having not played much of the SCD myself, it was interesting to see all the games he briefly played through, even if many looked to suck.
7) The Simpsons (Bart vs. the Space Mutants and vs. The World): Lots of great moments in this one. I love his bit about the ramps, the "Pick a Coffin" game, the endless platform jumping sequence ("I thought there was a glitch in the game!"), the rant about how the same button is used to run and jump, and "Maggie, can ya help me?" Also has a funny ending, with a nice callback to a line from his TMNT game review and James eating his own shorts.
8) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mainly for the sequence where James tries to get a pizza wedged between two platforms and tries for a good 30 seconds, but also has some other funny bits like his end rant (still one of the best of all his videos), the sequence where he tries to jump between the two platforms towards the ceiling and realizes you can just walk across, and his well-justified complaint that turtles can't swim.
9) Rambo: Three LOL moments in this one: The weird "fall through the floor" glitch, the horrified look on James's face when he turns Murdoch into a frog by shooting Chinese symbols at him, and using the lightgun on the SMS version ("I guess you just have to wave it around, like Rambo. Rambo never shot straight."). And also contained a nice callback to his Chronologically Confused video.
10) Friday the 13th: James has to fake that he likes the game or Jason will slice him. Good change of pace, especially when James looks around to see if Jason's watching and whispers that is sucks to the camera. Appropriately "creepy" atmosphere, too.

I found the "Wizard of OZ" funny in most parts, damn lion, the best character in the game has to have something that makes his usefulness more useful and want on my party so I protect him for the most important parts. I like it when he has someone pop up from time to time.
As for my favorite reviews I not going to do a top ten but a seven instead:
1. TMNT 3 Movie review: Basically I think that this is the funniest thing on the web that isn't some attention seeker. It was a well informed video, understand from a fan of the TMNT perspective how that movie was a major letdown in the franchise and explains why we didn't see a fourth movie ASAP.
2. The first Chronologically Confused: Bad Movie and and Video game sequel title run amok. I did think that "Mega Man X" ment "Mega Man 10" and his WTH for the different release for "Final Fantasy" between the American and Japanese, and the whole "screw it" attitude when 7 came out. There were some movie like his Rambo prediction coming true for a brief moment.
3. Sega CD/32x: I consider this a two parter since they're both "add-on" for the Genesis, and discuss why they both failed and why I didn't get them for my Genesis when I was a kid.
4. Spider-Man: It could have been the interaction James had with Spider-Man, since if we all been in a situation where we play a single player game, we always have someone who like "Jump, Jump!" or Spider-Man commiting suicide at the end due to the crappyness of his own games.
5. Atari Porn: Shows the sick underbelly of "Adult Gaming" on the most primitive console, and James hoping for a naked lady to bust through his door was an LOL moment for me. I'll admit, I too was expecting a naked lady, or atleast one in a bikini or bra and panties, to pop through the door.
6. Bible Games: The longest one on Youtube, and showed all of the old games that bipassed Nintendo lock-out. I think my younger cousin had the NES one that had Baby Moses. Also the Noah Ark game being a copy of Castle Wolfenstein was something that I wasn't aware of... but then again, since that was the only game that is known to not have been approved by Nintendo.
7. Back to the Future: I have to acknowledge the first review that I watched. When I watched it, I thought that it was funny review, since my family likes the BTTF series, and so do I.

The theme montage was good, too bad the only AVGN one to show up as a custom song on Guitar Hero 2 was the Spider-Man theme. I'd like to see somebody do the AVGN theme on GH.
Too bad he didn't use the AVGN theme that one guy did on Mario Paint.
James apparently likes it, as he has it on his Favorites list on YouTube.
Like most (when he first started getting big) my first review I saw the TMNT video, after that I watched the previous video's and then I've been watching the new ones since they've been coming out starting with Back to the future.
Like I mentioned I find the earlier episodes funnier since the novelty of cussing wore out, however I do like the newer episodes when James goes the extra mile and adds a gimmick.
I tried making a list but I kept deleting it...but yeah I enjoyed the early episodes the most and also other non game reviews like the wii salute and videogame vault. Newer reviews that are "back to the basics" can be good or "been there done that" but newer reviews that have a lot of production are still great since James keeps topping himself.
I actually didn't like the TMNT III review though, I thought it was mostly treading old ground he had covered in past reviews, it was too long and I actually like TMNT III.

I think the best part of that episode is him shooting a flaming arrow at the system. You know you hate something so much when you fire off a flaming arrow at it, that takes the cake!!!
It would be funny if the thing still ran after that. I would never imagine Sega products to be that sturdy...

From the overcomplicated process of editing movies back before non-linear editing (I too had to do that trick of two VCRs to record specific sections) to doing a lot of the work on movies myself, to the headaches of adding soundtracks, yeah, I've been there.
I leaned more towards the animation side than James did, though, especially in the later of years of our camcorder.

True, but his reviews on movies are similar to James and are based on products relating to our childhood.
The less observant people, however, dwell on the similarity too much. It's also for that same reason why many viewers take their reviews as a literal product bashing than satirical review.

Jackie Chan is the best, I don't think even the likes of Steve-O can compare to him in broken body factor.
Those stunts were fantastic, and the fact that he risked his body for entertainment says something about him. I liked the stunt that he wasn't so fond of that he reshot it many times, the skating near the bus, and of course running down the slanted windows. Just damn on the slanted windows one, a mere mortal man would have surely lost his balance on that one.

I don't know about the Sega Saturn, yes it was a failure in the USA but Sega of America was trying to kill it since 1997, while in Japan arcades were still on fire at the time so the Saturn having good ports of arcade games hits resulted in the Saturn being Sega's best selling system in Japan. Also Sega of Japan released their hot 2D arcade properties in Japan for the Saturn to show off the 2D power of the Saturn yet these didn't make it to the states.
So while easy to bash the Saturn for how it did in the US, when you include Japan it actually is start looking somewhat impressive. Even the Saturn being hard to program for is more the Saturn having a steep learning curve for developers, developers that suck with the Saturn was able to make really good looking titles for the Saturn.

Shoot, japan had a marketing campaign to get people to buy Saturns, otherwise the judo Saturn loving champion Segata Sanshiro would knock on your door to ask if your playing the thing. Trust me, you dont wanna say no to his face:D:evil:!!!
As for developers sticking with the Saturn, that would be Working Designs, Sonic Team and well Sega.
Yea you can thank this man for killing the Saturn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Stolar
That was just something i found looking up the Wiki on Working Designs. So if Stolar wasnt there, i bet the Saturn would have a huge fanbase in america and more WD games too...

The Saturn had around 1,000 titles released in Japan from numerous developers, many that stuck with the Saturn till the Dreamcast. We are not talking small developers either, Sega of Japan held onto Capcom and SNK as key developers for the Saturn till the Dreamcast.
Also the high resolution mode of the Saturn (720×575) meant the Sega Saturn saw a flood of dating games in Japan, since the common reward for these games is nudie pictures the Saturn's higher resolution was a huge advantage.
The AVGN could pick the Saturns non-game "games", like Namie Amuro - Digital Dance Mix and the Virtual Fighter CG Portrait Series but that is getter very obscure. He could pick on Time Warner Interactive, every port they did to the Saturn they botched like Virtua Racing and Race Drivin'.
No, I did not make this. Someone posted it at the Screwattack forums and thought of passing it.

XD, I still dont know how James can make that perfect frown. I've tried... I can't do it!
The trick is to push your lower jaw forward, then fold your lower lip up.

Another great vid. I believe there is a compilation of Intellivision games out for the PS2. It came out a couple of years ago.
