Hello fello customizers!! Been away for a while, but have something to share! I hope you guys like this idea, and would love some help on how to 'fine-tune' it.
I always hated the way they made Amazo in the same scale size as everyone else, here is an alternative without a lot of work. I got looking at the Justice League Swimming pool sticks (I hope everyone is familiar with them), It is a set of rubber 'figures' slightly taller than the our figures. It comes with Supes, Bats, WW, and Flash. I dremeled off Flash's details, reworked his face, and with a few coats of yellow paint and minor face detail.....wallah!, a better scale representation of Amazo!!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/lincolnmrk66/miscpics061.jpg
However, there is a downside  ....no articulation, the rubber is too flexable so he doesn't stand very straight, rubber doesn't 'sand' as well as plastic, and the paint 'cracks' if the figure bends. The biggest disappointment is that the backs of these 'figures' are hollow.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/lincolnmrk66/miscpics064.jpg
All in all, I still like him better than the Amazo we were given, and I could display him the way he is. This is where you guys come in. I know Casimir works with resins a whatnot to make extra heads. Tyke might know how to do this as well. Is it possible to take this idea further by filling in his back, then making a plastic mould...this way it could be duplicated for whoever wants a plastic, more in scale representation of Amazo? Who's up for the challenge??

lincolnmrk66,
Way to go! I remember seeing those JL dive sticks over the summer and thinking the same thing. But I wasn't sure about the material they were made out of and couldn't bring myself to experiment with them. You may be on to something with the resin Idea, but I know I've never worked with them.
Overall even though he's got problems I still think he looks really sharp in that first picture.
Does the dremmel work okay on the rubber, or did you just have to be careful and use it sparingly for Flash? I wonder if you could get a decent Giganta statue out of the WW?

Thanks DK...I just finished going thru your new figures, they came out great! You are really whipping out those obscure figures, with a lot of original ideas as well...great job!
As for Amazo, yeah he displays well on the shelf, but because of the rubber it's made of, I have no idea how long the paint will hold. I could leave him alone, but would love to figure out a way that anyone that wants one won't have the same problems. We'll wait to see what Cas thinks...he may have some pointers. The Giganta is also a great idea, but the WW has so many more details to dremel off. And to answer your other question, yes I used my dremel, but you do have to use it sparingly. The rubber burns off twice as fast as plastic. If a plastic cast could be made of the WW, then I think it would be possible to make a better scale Giganta.

I've never heard of these dive sticks, but it looks and sounds like a great place to start from. Shame they're made from rubber, though.
The heads I cast use a one-part mold. It's simple, and fairly easy. Anything more complex than a simple head requires a two-part mold. That's exponentially more expensive and difficult. I tried it once, and it turned into a $250 pile of mess. It's not a place to wade into recklessly.
That being said, I suspect your Dive Stick AMAZO might be a good candidate for a basic two-part mold. Alas, there are many people who know far more about this than me. I recommend two places for info. First, my pal Crushinaguy. He can certainly give you pointers. (Tell him I sent ya!) Here's his site: http://www.crushinaguy.com
I often visit Dan Perez's site for tips, info and wishful thinking (on my part): http://www.danperezstudios.com/
If you pursue this, and manage to make some castings, let me know. I'd love to buy one off ya!

That's Charlie (Jackam, I think is his last name), a very nice fellow that sets up at SDCC. His customs are there with him, including this beauty. Cool story, I went to SDCC, saw his table, didn't know who he was until I saw his customs. Called Casimir, and handed my phone to CHarlie (they knew each other via the custom-universe already). Now THAT was a geek-out moment for a customizer! ;)
And that Amazo is excellent. Count me in for an interested party if you can cast these puppies, too.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/3519/cyborg2fe8.jpg
Cyborg! Boo-yah! Now I can have a normal sized Cyborg on the JLU shelf, and not the hulking Teen Titan figure!
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1385/cyborg1sx0.jpg
Cyborg with interchangeable 'white-sound' blaster
http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/3530/p1010085du2.jpg
"Yo, Salad-Head!"

Killer Frost...
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/254/p1010083wq3.jpg
Salakk
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/2775/salakkcc3.jpg
He adds some variety to the JLU shelf!
And now, my WIP workshop!! I really enjoy seeing WIP shots, especially all the Fourth World characters by Tyke! Wow! :robin:
l to r: Amanda Waller, the Riddler, Capt. Atom (almost there!) and Control Freak
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/8932/p1010079fs8.jpg
Waller is slowly but surely coming along. Riddler's head is from a cast I made and I'm not entirely happy with it. The Captain is awaiting eyebrows and his emblem. Control Freak needs his ponytail, belt and Chewbacca strap thingy...
l to r: Cheetah, Scarecrow, The General and Robotman
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9792/p1010080yo8.jpg
Cheetah is harder than I thought she'd be. For some characters I get all perfectionist about them...she's one of them. Maybe I need a shrink! The Scarecrow looks slim and tall and his face looks MUCH better with some sculpted eyes! Give him a sickle and gas-skull and he's good2go! The Genereal needs alot of work. I haven't decided if I'm sticking with these legs of going with the legs from some X-Men 2099 big guy. Robotman! I loved the Super Powers version so much I HAD to make a JLU version! It's not based off his Teen Titans appearance, just a big, bulky robot body. Can't wait to add him to the shelf!
l to r: Capt. Atom, Control Freak, Ding Dong Daddy and Madame Rouge
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/936/p1010081yp5.jpg
Man, I recently DLed the entire Titans series...it's really good when viewed in order. Some weren't so good (and those were the ones I saw on TV) but they play a bigger part in a grander picture later on, so it was nice to see some continuity and questions answered...anywho, I really like the villians on the show, even the comical ones like Control Freak and Ding Dong Daddy. Madame Rouge is one bad mofo on the show, I never thought stretchy powers could be so cool and deadly!
Simon Stagg monster/Chemo
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/7540/p1010082mm5.jpg
I got back from my parents today and found my Marvel Masterworks Fantastic Four figure waiting for me. I wasted little time getting to work on him. I dremeled out his tongue, chopped off his fingers and toes, and cut him in half and lengthened him with the top off an air freshner. I packed a little aluminum foil around him as well and put a layer of Magic Sculpt around his missing stomach. He needs MUCH more work, but he'll be sweet when he's finished (IMO!)
Winged Victory (to be)
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/449/p1010083oj8.jpg
I can't remember where I saw this idea before (maybe here?), but it isn't mine. The horse is from the Hunchback of Notre Dame line and the wings will come from a Yu-Gi-Oh character I'm not familiar with. The wings need some minor work removing the horn and attaching the ball joint to the horse, but the one I saw looked real sharp.
Lois Lane and Green Lantern Ch'p (to be)
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8606/p1010084qc4.jpg
After 33 years I FINALLY own a Lois Lane figure!! I got her in the mail last week. Her head is terrible, especially next to the JLU figures. So I'll be replacing it, thanks! And the cute lil raccoon will be Ch'p-the weird Green Lantern raccoon! You can NEVER have enough Green Lanterns!
I got these Esmereldas in a lot with the horse shown above. These are cool figures on their own (if you liked that movie) but I think they are ripe with customizing possibilities!
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/2171/p1010085jb2.jpghttp://img81.imageshack.us/img81/5528/p1010086hv7.jpg
The first one in the reddish dress would make a nice Doom Patrol Celsius figure (mostly the head--she's got the tiara!) or perhaps Diana's mother. The other 2 will be helpful to make a Gypsy figure--especially the feet!
I have a few heads without bodies lying around. When I finish some of these I'll get to work on them. And the cycle continues...
Joel
SUPERPOWERS: Oh. My. God. What a premier! You, my friend, are MORE than welcome to join us here on the customizer thread. What talent....there is so much here I can't possibly write a compliment for everything!
Waller looks wonderful
Cyborg is sensational
Killer Frost is fantastic
Salakk is superb (nice use of the Nightwing base)
Control Freak? Awesome!
Your Riddler and Scarcrow interest me very much---I've wanted to see these guys in the JLU scale!
And....being a kid who was spoiled in the '80's, it's so cool to see vintage Super Powers Cyborg haunting the background of your photos!
Please keep us all up to date with the WIP!
WELCOME!
PS: I started a WIP thread of my ambitious FOURTH WORLD lineup in the last customizer's thread (part 5), and now have finished but not photographed SERIFAN, STEPPENWOLF redux, MARK MOONRIDER, GLORIOUS GODFREY, and GOLDEN GUARDIAN. Pics coming soon, but not now because it's SUPERPOWERS' moment! ;)

Joel,
Glad to see you found your way here. Out of all the watering holes for customizers, this one is one of my favorites. Nice and cozy.
I've been watching your stuff for some time and it's always a delight. I'm especially enjoying your WIP images. Some great stuff brewing there. I can't wait to see how Waller turns out. And the General.
By the way, the Lois can be made to work with just some slight adjustments to her hair. I think I reworked her bangs, and the back of her skull. (It's been years, and I made a couple of different versions.) Here's how one of mine came out:

Heya Super Powers! You are aptly named!
Great collection of customs. I really enjoy the work-in-progress shots because it really educates you on the process. Where did you find that Esmerelda figure with the skirt? I remember when the Hunchback figures first came out, and that one I've never seen before. I'm most looking forward to seeing your Lois, Waller and raccoon GL! Best of luck to you and keep us posted....

Tyke- Thanks for waiting to post your work to allow me to bask in the light for a bit, LOL. You rock! :D I REALLY like Dr. Bedlam , and well heck, pretty much each one of them! Forager and Godfrey take me back to the 80's "Who's Who" series (my first exposure to most of the DCU outside the Super Friends and Adam West's Batman). Awesome stuff!
Disney Boy- Thanks for the kind words! I don't know too much about the Hunchback line, it was the first time I've ever seen this red dressed Esmerelda before.
Casimir- Thanks! I've lurked around here for quite awhile and wanted another DC-friendly place to show my stuff. The fact that you and Tyke are here makes it tops in my books! (I'm a huge fan of both!) You have me rethinking my Lois Lane fix-up. Yours is great (of course) but I just feel her head is too big when standing next to a JLU figure. I'm not sure what I'll do now. Waller is my 'pet project' I hope I finish her soon, though...
Thanks again!

MM: that Superman looks pretty cool...you're getting creative! I just don't care much for that style body...he looks so...slim! Loved the movie, love the robot and luthor figures, but not a big fan of the superman figures from that line.
SP: that Captain Atom looks perfect. Don't worry about it...stop calling him a "mistake", you'll hurt his feelings.

ok i got a working question. i thought i read somewhere that plumbers putty was good to use when mold on things like hair. my problem is plumbers putty doesnt dry so how do i paint it? any help is much appreciated.
I only use Super Sculptey (which is unreliable and cracks later in life).
Casimir and the other geniuses on this board have discussed EPOXY PLUMBER'S PUTTY on this thread, i think....i KNOW if you go to http://www.pilliod.net, you'll find all the answers!
lincolnmrk66
12-08-2007, 01:00 PM
Thanks to Casimir, I now use plumbers epoxy. DO NOT use plumbers putty, it is completely different. Putty comes in a tub, and doesn't dry. EPOXY PUTTY is a two part clay-like substance that dries like hard plastic. It can be found at any plumbing store...Walmart carries it sometimes. Hope this helps:)
Here are sample images of both;

Though seemingly grateful for their help, once Eiling found out that the Justice League Watchtower had the power of a nuclear weapon inside of it, he turned a cold shoulder. With the knowledge that a space station was in orbit around the world packing a giant "laser", he returned to his base with the pieces of the Dark Heart.
When Eiling was told to take out Doomsday on a remote island before he could escape, Eiling ordered the firing of a nuclear missile whose payload was filled with kryptonite. The nuke was diverted by Batman; had it landed, it would've destroyed not only the island and Doomsday, but Superman as well as countless others.
After the disaster with Cadmus, Lex Luthor and the Justice League, Eiling was demoted to being a "pencil pusher." Not willing to sit on the side lines, Eiling broke into Cadmus HQ and stole a secret super soldier formula, originally made in 1944 under the project "Captain Nazi." Taking this formula, Eiling mutated into a horribly disfigured being. Eiling's goal was to take out Superman and the Justice League, though was beaten back by a crowd in Metropolis.

Fantasic work, SP! This is a recipe I'd love to try out, and soon...thanks for sharing:D

SUPERPOWERS: Holy Moley! That General is AMAZING! I ran this idea by Casimir a year or so ago (using Doomsday as a base), but never got around to it. Your formula is flawless. I really dig that custom! And your photography is perfect.
Here are three "oldies-but-goodies" customs (two are from when I first started customizing so many years ago!)

Not perfect, but it will work OK. I bought it at a Big Lots store. It is some kind of "Sparkz" line by Little Tykes. Once I finally get around to painting it red and white it should be very close to Vig's Indian.http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/4240/p1010094gt2.jpg

I'm sure I'll take some flak for customizing a brand new figure, but I've been looking forward to these since Grodd was announced.

http://www.pilliod.net/Images/Site/Temp/Monkeys2.jpg
Obviously, one is Grodd in his psychic power-enhancing helmet. The white one is Solovar, head of Gorilla City security, and the brown one is a generic Gorilla City citizen (maybe he's a security officer). To make the citizen and Solovar, I modified the hair and beard lines, expanding Solovar's forehead in the process. Grodd's helmet is sculpted, obviously.
I'll have "official" photos on my site later. But these will do for now.

lol, i remember back in the day when i was first starting to customize, i had all of these ideas in my head as to what figures should be customized...and then i found this "casimir" character online doing all of my ideas before i could get to them. and you know what? like you, I LOVED IT. :)

Rock on, Casimir! You beat us all to it. And no need to apologize about mutilating new figures, I'm sure they'll be plentiful soon enough. I've been seeing them most frequently.
I've got my hands full with some Christmas Present customs at the moment but sooner or later I'll be making my Solivar.
Super Powers, I was also thinking about M. Mallah, but is there a Brain figure out there or something that could work?
If there's a DC gorilla that can be customized from a Grodd let's see him customized!:)

What I love about your work Cas, is that I can't tell when I'm looking at it exactly what you changed. I'm always trying to figure your tricks out, and I often find I can't. Was it new paint details that did the trick this time? Or did he sculpt it a little differently?

thanks, guys! and dedication, yes! just know i have a LOT of completed figures sitting on the desk, and when i find spare time (xmas eve my wife was making lemon-drop cookies and no longer needed my help), i grab the camera and take photos and then post!

Control Freak
I thought at first he was supposed to look like a Jedi, so I chose some richer colors than on the show. Then after reading a bit about him, I see he's supposed to look like a Klingon-type character. Oh well. I'm not sure I could have pulled off the muted colors if I tried! ;D

Biography: The ultimate master of controlling things, Control Freak first popped up in a video store, demanding that his favorite movie, "Warp Trek V", be on their list of Top Movies. By making everything in the store, ranging from videos, shelves, and even candy, he wreaked havoc, trying to get what he wanted.
The Titans showed up before he could do any real damage, and he was carried off by the police, undoubtedly plotting his escape and next plan to foil the Titans. After all, what else do villains do in their downtime?
After escaping from prison, Control Freak took over the city's airwaves, invading every channel, one at a time. The Titans followed him into the world of TV (albeit by accident) and chased him down and finished it in a massive dual, complete with widescreen format. The Titans won, once again, and this time trapped Control Freak in a pocket dimension, inside the television series "Clash of the Planets."

SUPERPOWERS: Wow. I never really watched the 'toon, but loved the look of the show. This custom is great---he looks better than any store-bought Titan toy! You sculpted that head, right? Very nice indeed! Is that a computer print-out on his chest? How did you get that "belt" on his chest so perfect? Oh, Big Bear is taking quite a long time. But all he needs is hair/beard and a paint job. :)

Tyke continues his triumphant run at dominating us all.
Super Powers, I really dig that Control Freak. I didn't much care for the character on the show (though I liked all the pop culture references), but I'd buy this figure in a heartbeat. May I offer a friendly additional tip? The use of all the print-outs is great, but I recommend taking a colored marker to the edge of each piece. Right now the white edges scream "Look! I'm printed on paper!" If you can take an appropriately colored marker to each edge, it will really boost the overall effect.
Just my two cents.

As I make these customs part of me wants to make them the way I envision Mattel would make them. Basic bodies-new heads. I went that route for Riddler here. I used the (foreign) Super Powers Riddler as a bit of an inspiration--mostly the belt. I left the bowler hat just cause it's cool.

I like that yours makes use of the Hasbro/Kenner S:TAS Lex anti-kryptonite suit or whatever it was called. Figures like that look good but aren't show-accurate, so using them in a clever way just makes me feel like they belong :) Have it when toys don't belong...don't you?
DB: thanks a lot! And yes, I like to use non-show-accurate-but-close-enough-to-fit-into-my-collection bases! I always say this: it's my collection, damnit, and therefore MY way to make customs. :)
BTW, here is my pride and joy 1/2 way done. I feel when the eyes and hair are done, he'll have his personality...I hope....I've put a lot of work into Kalibak (moreso than any other custom), and I'll not be happy if I paint the eyes and he just doesn't "fit" as DB puts it...

As Dusty is making other DCAU characters, I"m still stuck in the FOURTH WORLD, and with the latest announcement (and picture) of the upcoming MANTIS/LASHINA/FORAGER/MMIRACLE/DARKSEID/SUPERMAN pack, I'm more inspired than ever to stay in the FOURTH WORLD!

You just reminded me of the beauty of being an artist: it's OUR art so we can do what we WANT. I take MANY liberties with my customs, and I'm quite sorry for pointing out something that was "missing"....artistic freedom is what customizing is about. Our own interpretation...and I prefer yours over an "old" Superman indeed! :) And thanks to you, too!

And that Supermen rock! I really like the blue one great and smooth paint job!

Hey Guys!
I have kind of fallen off the Earth for a bit. I have been checking in from time to time to see what amazing things you have been up to. Tyke, your recent trip into Jack Kirby's world has been fantastic! What a huge undertaking! Considering the enormous amount of "Source" material you have to work from, you could really spend the rest of your customizing life in that world. More than even the shear amount of work and talent that you have put into this project, I really appreciate your obvious love and respect for Kirby's universe. Great job! You never disappoint.
For my own part, I haven't done much customizing lately. I have been anxiously awaiting Mattel's unveiling of there 2008 offerings and didn't want to duplicate what might be coming.
The other day, however, I had an idea for a figure that I was nearly certain Mattel would not produce. My wife and I were both big fans of the Barbara and Karl Kesel run of Hawk and Dove. We already have the original Hawk and Dove, so I decided to make the Dawn Granger Dove. I always liked the design of the character and was, I thought, pretty safe from being commercially made. I based her on Justice Lords Wonder Woman. Very little modification was necessary. A little Magic Sculpt for hair and a piece of Justice Lords Superman's cape. A new paint job and there you have it. Not a major undertaking, but something vaguely original and fun to make.
Unfortunately my photography skills have not improved much, but you can see the results here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/13619482@N08/?saved=1
Anyway, it was an interesting diversion while we've been snowed-in here in Iowa!
Til next time!

A question Tyke...if you'd left the Horde symbol on his...crotch sash (for lack of a better term)...would it have matched the red you'd painted his chest symbol?

Agapens Power Girl custom is excellent as is usual with his work.
What is less admirable is the rampant use in this thread of a euphemism for a woman's breasts.
Would you use the term funbags around your daughter, mother or female co-worker?
Juvenile, at the very least and certainly sexist.
I'm very suprised in Dusty, in particular.
Just my 2¢.
Flame away.

nah, the FOUR HORSEMEN used maroon (see the red on the staff), and I repainted the chest emblem rose-red.

Hi folks,
Most of you know the majority of my time is dedicated to my now 8-month-old son. (He rocks!) I've had to curtail my online presence a great deal, and I'm sorry I don't get to comment on all the great pieces I've been seeing displayed here. I'll try to do more than just poke fun at my ignorance of the Fourth World characters. (Via Tyke's amazing menagerie.) But I did manage to finally finish a few projects. Some of these have been seen, some are just now getting paint. Animated stuff, McG stuff, a Gorilla City Temple playset and more. I invite you over to Inanimate Objects check them out. With a little luck, I can dive into some big, new projects now without too much delay.
Keep up the awesome work, folks!

Ok, LEGENDS #3 was my first comic book ever when I was a kid. I bought all 6 and kept collecting the humorous JUSTICE LEAGUE afterwards. I've got a question for all you customizers out there about paint. I know for customs we're supposed to go through all these steps to make our paint look good, including using a primer, then arcylic, then a sealant etc. etc. etc. But I have to still wonder...
Why is it the paint WE use is so different than the paint actual toy companies use? Like...what I mean is, what paints do THEY use to get their figures to look so good, and how come WE can't just do that?

We just moved and I finally got a chance to get all my figures up. I've even found a little customizing time. If you have good eyes you might spot a new one or two in this pictures somewhere but I've lost track of the last DC animated customs I've added to this collection.
Oh and who has some good ideas for customs or improvements based on new stuff Mattel unveiled last weekend? I think Galetea could use a repainted face, which if I'm not mistaken is just that ugly old Black Canary with new hair. Not to complain. Awesome stuff coming our way! :)

The customs are far outnumbering the pure store bought figures at this point I'm afraid. Many repaints, some modified with sculpting and part swapping, and a few completely original sculpts.

Hey guys, now that I have two Vigilantes I want to give one his own motorcycle but I’m not sure which one I should get. I'm trying to match the one from the show and the best I could come up with was the Harley Davidson 1958 FLH Duo Glide Die Cast Motor Cycle. Do you guys think its close? I couldn't find any better screen shots, and I don’t know anything about motorcycles or what kind Vigilante rode.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks Tyke, do you have any pics of yours? Maybe it'll give me a few ideas!
Someone over at the action figure insider forums said they think he rides an Indian Cheif motorcycle. Have you ever seen a diecast model of one of those? I found one on ebay but i don't think it looks much like Vigs bike.
Edit: Found this pic on the inernet of the 1947 Indian Chief, looks pretty close:
http://www.khulsey.com/motorcycles/indian_chief_1947.jpeg
Any diecast models out there?
Also, what scale would JLU be considered, 1/6th???
Here ya go, and again: this idea came to me via SUPER POWERS, a customizer that has since disappeared from this board! I sure hope he doesn't think I "stole" his idea ;)

I really love seeing the evolution of someone's craft. That recent Tom Turbine is definitely a big improvement over the first two (albeit snazzy) versions. Just by looking at the arms and face, you can see how much more accurate and confident your work has become. Great job!
And Cas, you surely must be tired of accolades by now...but I don't much care for Star Girl as a character, and yet I STILL love your plastic version of her. I can't for the life of me figure out where all her parts came from...and I almost don't want to know, because that's the sign of a quality custom :)
Great work everyone!

I haven't posted for ages but I am now the owner of a fast food batman beyond and a jlu superman. Does anyone have a link to a tutorial of how to customise that, I know Casimir has one but I can't find it. I just want to take the base off, maybe paint the logo cos it looks a bit dirt coloured, and I think I will probably leave the backpack on really, just paint it black. But it has these tacky fabric wings, is there some more plasticky, heavier material I could use to make new ones? I know it's not particularly show-accurate, cos I think Terry's wings were attached to his arms? Can't remember, but they look pretty cool.
Also the jlu superman is a bit odd, I thought it was a justice lord or something at first, because the body is black, but the cape is black, inner cape red, and supes logo is sort of grey-blue. It had some gimmick where he broke out of the chains and some rocks fell or something but I can't be bothered with that. I might use them as a backdrop or something though. But this does mean that his arms are really floppy cos they're designed to fly around, so they only go in the down position. Is there something easy I can do to make them more poseable. And generally any ideas on how to paint this Superman? The cape isn't really right for Justice Lord Supes or Future Supes, but I might take it off and paint a high collar on, sand off his S and make it into Brave New World Superman. But the cape is pretty neat so it'd be good to keep it. Anyway thanks

BK's Batman Beyond's wings and stand are pretty ugly but not to hard to remove.

You just have to break the stand and sand it down so it's nice and flat like the clear stands that come with the female JLU figures now. I broke off his wings, sanded that down too and filled it in with hot glue and paint, then sanded and filled and sanded and filled ......
I probably should have used putty or super sculpy (see Casimirs site) but i was too lazy. I think the outcome was decent though. I'm sure i got the idea from Casimirs site. He did the same exact thing i think (of course he did it better! ;) )
Good luck!

And I just squeezed a custom in yesterday: custom TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE BLASTER. Hasbro just simply repainted a pre-Earth Soundwave in the Blaster colors, and KEPT SOUNDWAVE'S HEAD! So I redid the head, with a certain JLU face. Can you guess whose face that is?

Nice to see this thread is still alive. I'm loving all the Justice Guild customs. Here's a little brainstorming project for anyone who's interested. I saw this Ben Ten figure this week and thought he might be a great new body type to use for JLU customizing. He's totally in scale and has a simplistic sculpt to him. So far I've come up with a few ideas: Timm style Superboy, and Marvel Animated Torus Storm (of the short lived Fantasic 5 comic, I love obscure characters). Can anybody think of any other male teen/tweens that Ben might work for?
http://bizarroinc.com/bentimm.jpg
I love those Ben 10 figures: I think this guy could be turned into Morgain Le Fey's son, too. Or Terry's little brother in Batman Beyond?

I kind of like him as a Tim Drake. Not exactly the same size, but close enough. Or maybe a young Dick Grayson?
Thanks for the heads up!

So what do you guys do for hair? I am currently customizing some figures, but I do not know how to do hair, as sculpey just breaks. I need to give one figure long blonde hair, and the other a pony tail.

Love the new Gallery Tyke, its nice to see all your stuff categorized.
Goodfellow, I'm not sure what kind of Sculpey you're using, I only use "Super Sculpey" which when heated becomes a lot more durable. Needless to say small pieces can still break off if you're not careful. There are a lot of other sculpting mediums out there however and one might work better for you. Sometimes it's easier to lop off the existing hair of another figure and connect it to the head of the custom with Sculpey, that way the dangling parts won't be susceptible to breakage.
Casimir's site (http://www.pilliod.net/secrets.htm) lists info on some of the different sculpting mediums. Also you might already know this, but don't put a figure with sculpey on it in the oven or the plastic will melt. I use a heat gun to carefully only harden the parts with the sculpey. Even then you have to be careful to protect the face/nose of the figure from warping if you're hardening sclupted hair.

I use whatever it is they sell at Hobby Lobby. While I have had luck with my figures not melting in the oven, I've been told that boiling works better.
As for the hair, my problem is that the sculpey not only does not look like hair (it looks like a big blob no matter how I try to put waves into it), but the moment I turn the head, or sometimes when I pop the head onto the neck, the hair snaps off or cracks.

Trial and error is how I eventually got a knack for sculpting hair. I like to focus on one section at a time (bangs, back, side) depending on the hairstyle you might have to layer it, or just do a bunch of individual strands. Sometimes I can put the general shape on and "cut" the detail into it with sculpting tools or an xacto knife.

Hello all! It has been a long time hasn't it? here is a small update, (I have been planning on doing this one for a long time but I could not find the right base, so when Mattel released Fire I thought of 3 figures I could make from her and this was the one I chose,

Hey Guys!
I haven't died or anything, but customizing just hasn't seemed as necessary lately. We are getting so many new figures from Mattel that I felt like I should wait and see what they decide to make before I try any new customs.
I was also hoping for inspiration. I've made a few customs this last year, but nothing that hasn't been made by other folks first. I finally managed to get a hold of the Jack-in-the-Box Batgirl and Supergirl to update my Stargirl and Supergirl. Many thanks to Casimir for the recipes for those two. I just recently saw Dusty's Mera and I got the inspiration I was looking for. That is a nice piece, Dusty. I didn't try that, however. It was the idea of making a DC character that Mattel was not likely to make. I also wanted to add something of my own. A new custom that wasn't someone else's idea or anything.
I was looking around Target the other day and I saw all those Question 3 packs hanging there. That's when it hit me! DC character, strongly associated with the Justice League, but probably not on Mattel's radar.
The Phantom Stranger!
He was constructed from a JLU Question, a Justice Lords Batman face, and the Martian Manhunter's cape. A very simple custom, but I was pleased that it was my own idea and I finally had something to offer the group.
Here it is on my flikr account.

Now watch Mattel announce this guy at Toy Fair next month!
I hope you like it!

Hey Cas!
Thanks for the update! Great stuff on your site, as always. That Supergirl statue is really a knock-out. Seems the sculptor has really overcome some of the problems his past statues have had with overly angular/geometric features (RE: That Harley maquette and others) and begun really smoothing out his work. I still think Supergirl's cheeks/profile could use a little work in the smoothing department...but those legs are amazing! Your paints really pop, and all in all, next to his Riddler, this is my favorite yet!
Really like your Luthoriac :) Smart use of a fast-food kid's toy, yet again.
But the biggest surprise was Kalibak! When did you make that guy? He looks awesome in that Granny picture....his upper arms, his face, the paints...wow!
Casimir
06-15-2009, 08:55 PM
DB... Supergirl was sculpted by Kristopher Meadows, and Harley and Ivy were sculpted by Cory Smith. Both are incredbly talented, and manage to edge their own style into that of the Timmverse.
Kalibak was sculpted by a fella that goes by the name of Grundy. There are links to his gallery in the Kalibak and Luthoriac pages. His stuff is amazing!
Thanks for the kind words!
