View Full Version : Things From Nintendo That Annoy You

I know Nintendo is great and all, Hell even I root for them, but has there ever been a moment from Nintendo that has disturb or annoy you? Something from Nintendo you don't like? I, for one, just don't like Mario's lack of personality or self-thought. He's always on a mindless, cheerful mood. You should have seen him in Mario Tennis: Power Tour for Game Boy Advance. He was acting like an idiot. Green L and Wario were more develop than Red M. It sometimes makes me wonder How did Sonic the Hedgehog lose to him. And that's not half of it. No offense.

Because SEGA made crappy systems and the Sonic games went downhill.
One thing which annoys me about Nintendo today: http://gonintendo.com/?p=30188
What? A video game cannot make you beautiful. Their comment makes no sense, unless they mean their games themselves look beautiful, a comment which applies much more to Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime than WiiFit and Brain Age. Also, saying you haven't abandoned your core gamer by listing off 3 games which were in production years ago and have already been released doesn't sound exactly encouraging.

That we only get one true Mario game per console. I'd like to see more 3D Mario platformers, but just don't have as many as Sonic. Maybe one every few years like they have with Zelda will do.

Lack of voice acting. Every Nintendo protagonist is silent, reduced to a few catchphrases or grunts and whatnot. Now no voice acting probably beats bad voice acting, but to be honest I'd like to see them use this more. Zelda and Link don't talk, Mario is limited to a few phrases, Bowser just grunts and yells.
Its not a major deal and sure doesn't make or break a game in my book, but good voice acting is a nice touch to any game.

Metroid Prime 3 was smart in having everyone speak except Samus. A technique like that would work for the next Zelda game, unless it's too hard to do given it'd have to read different file names.

Then you'd get annoying voices like in the Sonic games. I'd prefer if the protagonist is silent, but the other chars aren't, but only if they can get the voices right.

Arrogant, smarmy PR.
Archaic, unimaginative game design (that being said, Mario Galaxy is the best game they've made in 10 years)
Dull, tired IPs
Backing of non-games
Edit by Bird Boy: Wow. Watch the connotations there. This is a PG forum.
Friend codes.
Third parties treating their system like a redheaded stepchild.
Distinct lack of maturity.

Distinct lack of maturity.
Are other developers really more mature? Other companies might put more sex and violence into their games, but is the maturity factor much different? Honestly, nongames like Brain Age tend to be more mature than, say, GTA.

-It severely lacks the initiative to buck tradition with their Zelda franchise. The games are now too easy, they all have the exact same thing, they have no speech, no orchestral score, the same two towns (Castle Town and Kakariko), the same races, the same cloistered kingdom, and so on and so forth.
-With the exception of Metroid Prime 3, anytime Nintendo has to put speech in their games, its the most mediocre voice acting you'll ever hear. Case in point: Fire Emblem and Super Mario Sunshine.
It is these and what everybody else has said about the company.

No proper third-party game approval process, leading to a ton of dumpy titles crowding the shelves
Complete reluctance to listen to the American market. It's...different. People like certain things here that they aren't into in Japan, like online titles.
Doing some things without warning and no explanation, like closing their website forums
One complaint directed at all the companies: defending obvious errors and bad decisions with spin-talk.

-Not giving us the Earthbound sequel or even the friggin' GBA remakes.
-Friend Codes
-The Nintendo 64 barring a few games such as Star Fox 64. The system never clicked with me.
-The arrogance (they slid away but seem to be making a bit of a comeback)
-No Startropics 3, Punchout 3, or Golden Sun 3 STILL
-No hard drive for the Wii
-Abandoning the Mario 3 e-reader cards. (Those levels were great, dammit)
-And I guess the gimmicks get old like the e-reader and GC to GBA connecting.
I'm kind of sick of Reggie. He was cool back when Nintendo was the underdog, but now his boasting just comes off as distasteful. The E3 presentation, for example, was literally nothing but Reggie ranting about how Nintendo has dominated the market. I'm glad they're doing well again, but it's getting annoying.

The same goes for other popular franchises, like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.
I find it annoying that they haven't made a Pokemon game for the console, that plays just like they do on the handhelds. Or better yet, an MMORPG of Pokemon.
Nintendo may be a great video game company and all, but they're not always good at giving the people what they want.

(The only games I can think of where I like the voice acting is the Kingdom Hearts series, but I just thought it was cool that they got many of the Disney character VAs to voice their characters in the series...Admittedly,the only one Nintendo had any part in was the GBA one, which doesn't really have voices outside of battle, and even then it's limited) ....

The thing that annoys me about Nintendo is that its Wii can't attain the perfection that the Sony and Microsoft fans clearly require of it; a perfection that I can only assume the Playstation 3 and X-Box 360 have already achieved. :p

Nothing annoys me, but there is one large mistake I would fix if I had the power of time travel: a cartridge-based Nintendo 64. Had it been CD based, making it more 3rd-party friendly, things may have been different over the past decade. We might have seen such classics as Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VII on the N64. Or not. It's impossible to know.
Oh, scratch that. The lack of Mother 3 in America annoys me.
Beyond that, Nintendo does a terrific job of making me happy, with or without all the other complaints people have.

I don't get why we can't have this. The closest they have done is make games like Pokemon XD where you can only catch Pokemon other people have. Is it possible they won't make a true console Pokemon game for technical reasons? I don't know what those reasons would be, but it might have something to do with programming over 300 moving creatures as opposed to 2-D sprites.
I don't know. It's seemed like a no-brainer to me for the longest time.

-All Original Games Only Nintendo(I'd kill to have SSBB and SMG on my PS2)

-No DVD on the Wii
-No Flash support on the Wii
-No Hard Drive on the Wii
-No Built in Music, Video, or Internet support on the DS

-Absolutely terrible online spport when compared to the other major consoles
-Reggie
-No DVD or CD support
-Giving us millions of Mario sports titles while we only get a real Mario platformer once per console
-The arrogance
-Like others have said, no pokemon MMORPG
And perhaps the biggest of all, the Wiimote. Total abomination of a controller, most of its uses come off as gimmicky and most of the nosies it makes are extremely annoying(especially in the case of Guitar Hero 3). There are a few instances where it's pretty fun to use(some areas in SMG) but those are few and far between, and not worth it when it makes other games(Sonic and the Secret Rings) unplayable.

There are some things that Nintendo does that I just don't understand or like, here are some.
- No CD/DVD support for Wii
- Friend Codes
- No hard drive for Wii
- Terrible online support, its got time to get better but right now it sucks
- Little to no voice acting in any of their games
- Wii graphics being pretty much last gen
I just don't understand why Nintendo didn't make the GameCube or Wii with the ability to play CDs or DVDs. I know their reasons, and they sorta make sense, but c'mon. Right now there is no head set for the Wii, but I'm hoping that changes in the future cause it really takes away from the online experience. No hard drive for Wii makes no sense at all. Don't get me wrong, I love my Wii, I even loved my GameCube. And then theres Mario, I know most people think I'm crazy for not liking Mario but, I've just never got into the series. I always thought the Mario characters were ugly and acted like retards, and the series is just boring. Nintendo also needs to look at a lot of the games being developed for the Wii, cause most of the games are crap. It really bothers me that a majority of games for Wii are mini-game compilations or games with tons of unnecessary waggle. The Wii remote has so much potential but yet a majority of developers take the lazy way out and we get crap. And then theres the Wii's graphic power, I don't understand why Nintendo decided not to improve the graphics. I believe the Wii's graphic power is about the same as the original Xbox, still last gen. And because of this when it comes to multiplatform games the Wii version is a mere PS2 port.
-All Original Games Only Nintendo(I'd kill to have SSBB and SMG on my PS2)
You don't see the Jak & Daxter series, or God of War, and other Sony series on Wii or 360. And you certainly don't see Halo on Wii, PS2, or PS3. So I don't see where the problem is.

There are some really well-thought-out cogent instances in this thread, but I personally have to go with the Game Boy Micro, just about the most useless thing ever.
I actually don't mind friend codes, then again I'm not big into the whole online scene.
For one, there's the lack of games. Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess were both excellent but it sucks that there won't be another Mario or Zelda for a good 2-3 years. With Metroid Prime having ended with 3, I can only hope that Retro is at work on another franchise to take its place (like... Kid Icarus?) because just Mario and Zelda won't cut it for a platform that relies heavily on big, first-party efforts. Games like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart don't really need numerous incarnations on a system since they can pretty much last throughout the system's life span.
A lack of effort to get third parties on board. Games like Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest would have been perfect for the GameCube. The Capcom Five became the Capcom Four, and three ended up being brought over to the PS2. Hyped games such as Crystal Chronicles and Red Steel failed to meet expectations. Solid Snake is appearing in Smash Bros. - yet, Metal Gear Solid 4 is kept to the big boys. Reggie has been in talks with Rockstar and they've tossed a few bones, but no sign of a Grand Theft Auto title, much less a main entry.
Pokémon on consoles sucks. Stop outsourcing it to Genius Sonority.
Sonic games are crap and if anything, there should be an effort to distance themselves from the franchise until it becomes good again.
"Wii would like to play" ads being used for every single game. I'd like to think that Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 deserve a bit more.

I agree, I really hope they don't end up making the ad for Super Smash Bros. Brawl another generic "Wii would like to play".

But seriously, I agree with your points. I'm hoping the next Zelda really brings some new elements to the table. I'm thinking a different Link (AKA not a farm/forest/small town boy turned green-tunic wearing super hero), and far different situations (maybe it won't involve Princess saving?) are needed, at least.
"Wii would like to play" ads being used for every single game. I'd like to think that Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 deserve a bit more. I'm hoping they break the mold for Smash Bros. "Wii would like to....BRAWL!" would be too cool to hear from those polite Japanese guys.
For my own points now...
-I must have said it many times now, but I strongly disagree with their online plans. Friend codes, isolation, and utter lack of communication between players is very bad. We shouldn't need to have barriers forced between people for no reason other than the possible threat of the soccer moms.
-Hard Drive Support. What would it take, a simple firmware upgrade? What's the hold up? Some people have already maxed out their Wii in both Channel space and memory space. I haven't, but I know I will eventually (or at least things will feel cramped), and I know I will be pissed off if I have to do that delete/redownload crap. My Wii is NOT a fridge!
-3rd party support. It's not such a big deal to me, but in the public eye it's extremely important. Step it up.
-Reggie was cool at first, and he did bring Nintendo to where they are now to his credit, but the PR in general talking down to the competition is very heavy-handed and unneeded.
-Specific Games (in other words, nitpicks): Golden Sun 3 and Mother 3. Lucas has an inclusion in Brawl which won't hurt the matter at all, so maybe it will push them to translate and release it, but who knows. I think we've seen enough proof that a new Golden Sun is desired very much. If the demand is there, they should supply... by making Camelot make the freaking game!
I'd like to end this off by saying that even with these flaws I still love Nintendo. I'm saying it in hopes that Nintendo could improve and be even better in the future.

All the first party Nintendo games have done fine with the remote, either placing motion control where appropriate or not using it at all. This is more of a complaint against third parties than anything.

Those games are all the property of Squeenix (except Parodius which is by Konami). Nintendo has nothing to do with whether they got stateside release or not.
Not that I wouldn't kill for a Seiken Densetsu 3 port on GBA, DS, or Virtual Console, but it's Square-Enix you need to complain to about that, not Nintendo.
Seriously, though, nothing Nintendo's done in the last decade has been nearly as bad as the Virtual Boy. That's right up there with the Ngage when it comes to colossal blunders.

I think the whole "debate" is just bitter fanboys trying to act elitist.
Being a hardcore gamer shouldn't be defined by what games you play, it should be defined by how often you play them.

As Toon Overlord said, lack of support for past Game Boy games on DS. At the very least, they could try porting their older GB/GBC games into DS carts. A few that come to mind:
- Super Mario Land/Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coin (The first being a top seller and the second game introducing Wario)
- Mega Man Mania (which was canceled before GBA SP ended)
- Yoshi/Yoshi Cookies
- Power Rangers Collection (To coincide with Super Legends)
The only real peeve I've had with Nintendo is the breezy difficulty of many of their games lately, particularly Zelda titles. I haven't played Galaxy, so they may yet surprise me.
As far as voice acting, I still think they shouldn't bother and just stick to text, at least when dealing with Mario and Zelda titles. I have enough of an imagination that I 'd rather not risk the typically bland/annoying voice acting that comes with many Nintendo franchises.

I only like voice-acting if it actually matches the lip syncing (exceptions are midget sprites like Tales of Legendia, because then it doesn't matter). Xenosaga, however, has no excuse and I probably would have been done with the game by now and enjoyed it.
It's irritating, especially when they talk in the main scenes but go silent during the lesser scenes.
I don't have that problem with Nintendo, but everybody making stupid voice cues that sound like they've got brain damage in Twilight Princess made me laugh at first, but it quickly becomes grating. Banjo-Kazooie did it better.

Friend codes.
I never really grasped the problem people had with friend codes. I mean, most games have a system in place where you can save your friends' friend codes into the game itself, right?
To me, I see Friend Codes as being the equivalent to a "Friend Request" on sites like Facebook and MySpace. You need to be "approved" to post on the person's wall just like you need to be "approved" (via entering a Friend Code) to play a game online with a friend.
I find it annoying that they haven't made a Pokemon game for the console, that plays just like they do on the handhelds. Or better yet, an MMORPG of Pokemon.
I think the reason is that Nintendo wants the "main franchise" games to remain on the handhelds.
Even so...there's no excuse for the crappy Pokemon console games we've been given. The two that we have on the GameCube just aren't fun. It's just repetitive battle after repetitive battle with a plot that makes the handheld games look like great pieces of literature. I mean...would it have killed them to give Colosseum an actual ending!?
I'd like to see a 3D Pokemon RPG that doesn't reuse models from the Nintendo 64 games, doesn't use the beeps and boops for the pokemon cries that the original Game Boy games used (come on, Nintendo...get Pokemon USA in the studio for a day or two and have them record all the pokemon's voices), and isn't just more of the same old same old. Being able to snag other trainers' pokemon in the console games was a nice addition, and the world in those games was pretty refreshing, but they don't need to stop there.
It really bothers me that a majority of games for Wii are mini-game compilations or games with tons of unnecessary waggle. The Wii remote has so much potential but yet a majority of developers take the lazy way out and we get crap.
The DS had the same problem in its first year and a half (or so). You just had gimmicky touch controls/microphone input tacked onto ports of GBA games. Developers eventually figured out how to make better games using the new hardware, but for that first year or so, the system was a whole lot of trial and error.
I think the Wii will be the same way. The system just celebrated its one year anniversary, so I'm sure the era of crappy GameCube ports with waggle tacked onto it will be coming to an end soon. It happened for the DS, so I don't see why it won't happen for the Wii.
Now the thing I'm not fond of? The Mii creation system. It's incredibly limited and unnecessarily difficult to create many of my friends using the current system. I wish Nintendo would release some downloadable patch or something to add more hairstyles/eye shapes/facial hair/skin colors/etc.

Let's see:
Lack of full backward compatibility for the DS. The GBA had it, so there's no reason the DS shouldn't.
Lack of any voice acting in their main games. Last generation was understandable. Full voice acting was still relatively new. But now? I could even understand if they wanted to keep the characters like Mario and Link from having voices, but the others should in those games. Not even every little bit of dialogue, but voice acting really helps with the immersion factor in a game.
Lack of good Pokemon console games.
While the Virtual Console is a good idea, I think 3 games per week is too few at this point. There's still a huge library of great games not yet available.
The online system does need an overhaul.

See, I didn't mind them at first but now it's getting ridiculous. I thought that the Wii code would serve has a universal friend code for all online games. And, really, there's no reason why it shouldn't. But we still have to enter a long number code for every online Wii game instead of just using that one code for all online games?

What really annoys me about Nintendo is their treatment of the Mother series. I thought that because of the popularity of Marth and Roy is Smash Bros. Melee leading into the release of Fire Emblem games in the states would also mean the release of Mother 1+2 and Mother 3 in the US. Of course I don't know how popular Ness was in comparison but it would have been neat if Nintendo was to show the gaming population the origins of Ness. Because of the lack of release, Ness is the only character in SSBM to not get his own game (in the US) last generation.
Yes, I know the Mother games are text heavy and it may have been expensive to translate them. However if Nintendo took the risk to translate and release the games and they flop, they're only two games out of countless other game Nintendo releases and Nintendo makes tons of profits off other properties. I don't think the costs going into translation of the Mother games would really hurt them in the long run.
Also, I would like to take my DS and Wii online. Though what I'm hearing about Nintendo's online systems sound pretty heavy.

Hmm... Retro Studios working on an Earthbound/Mother game seem possible?
No. Mother is Shigesato Ito's child, and a Mother 4 would only be made if he decides that he wants to add a fourth entry to his franchise.

The Virtual Boy, Nintendo's worst and most forgettable system. I understand that Nintendo was trying to be innovative, but the red-and-black color scheme was worse than the gray-and-black color scheme of the original Game Boy. Just try to play that thing for half an hour without getting a migraine; it's virtually impossible.

1) They ignore the potential of adding Wii controls or online multiplayer to VC games.
That would cost Nintendo money. The VC is an easy profit for them. To go in and add that stuff would would probably cost more than their willing to spend. Besides, I want to play my vintage games the old fashioned way. Using motion sensors for new games is often annoying enough.
5) Lack of Gameboy games on VCI'm fine with no Gameboy games on the VC. Since the DS is backwards compatible some people have probably been playing their oldest Game Boy games for almost 20 years. It's not necessary and I understand why Nintendo doesn't do it. Game Boy on the VC is just clutter, IMHO.
6) Lack of VC RPGsAren't there Paper Mario titles on the VC now?
9) ArroganceNot sure I agree with you on that one.

We don't have an online Goldeneye VC game with Wii controls.
Reasons why this will never happen:
1.) Goldeneye was made by Rare, which is now owned by Microsoft.
2.) The James Bond license now resides with EA.
3.) If Nintendo WERE to make an online FPS with Wii controls, it would almost certainly be a full retail title, not a VC or WiiWare game. That's just good business.
This thread is entitled "Things From Nintendo That Annoy You," not "Impossible Wishes That I Nevertheless Want Nintendo to Fulfill." I mean, I'd like it if the Wii were $50, had better graphics than the PS360, and could play Final Fantasy XIII despite the fact that it hasn't been released yet, but it's not gonna happen. There are things Nintendo SHOULD do but doesn't, things they don't do because it's not cost-effective or seems too risky for the potential benefit, and things they just flat CAN'T do. If we could limit discussion to the first, I'd be happiest, but if we can at least quit whining about the third, I'll be content.

Actually they lost the license awhile ago, Activision now has the license.

Oops, my mistake. The point remains, though-- Nintendo doesn't have the license and has never had the license.

Actually the system itself wasn't nearly as disheartening as Gunpei Yokoi's sudden, apparently forced, disappearance from Nintendo immediately following it.

Oh yes, the lack of online functionality for the Virtual Console. Come now Nintendo, I want to kick ass on Gunstar Heroes with my friend in Milwaukee and you can't offer online play for those games?

SEGA would have to remake the game, not Nintendo.
Nintendo's already redoing Dr. Mario for online.

6) Lack of VC RPGs
Like Treasure Hunter G, Treasure of Rudras, Live A Live, Sekien Densetsu 3, Romancing Saga 1-3, and Bahamut Lagoon? Then yeah I totally agree with ya.
