I dunno, but it's just ocurred to me, that black hair pops up a lot in the comics. Batman has black hair, so do Tim and Dick, and Alfred used to(did Jason Todd?). Superman and Lois have black hair, Wonder Woman as black hair. Catwoman, least her comic self and TNBA self have black hair. The next color that seems to be used a lot is red: Barbara Gordon, The Flash, Poison Ivy, to name a few....the only blonde's that comes to mind at the moment are Black Canary and Harley Quinn. Brown hair coloring seems to be the least hair color used, or maybe it's just me. Wow, this seems like such a random topic!

I can only go by the animated universe that I know, but...

I don't think the abundance is really of black-haird peeps, I think there is a much greater precentage of red-heads. I mean, think about how many red-haired people you know to the number of people you know altogether. Mine might be .5%

Now think of all of the red headed characters from B:TAS:

Batgirl
Poison Ivy
Andrea Beamont
Summer Gleeson
Veronica Vreeland

... and more I forget. Notice they're all female, too? Hehe, I think old Timm had a thing for carrot tops... :) Anyway, that's alot of major female characters.

I think the reason there seem like so many black haired peeps is because to many men are dark haired in real life. Sure some guys are blonde, but the vast majority of guys are dark-haird. Sure, maybe not as dark as Bruce/Dick ect. but hey, who knows.

Yeah, Jason had black hair.
Azrael, Zsaz, and Power Girl are blonde, in the comics Two-Face has brown hair and Riddler used to, um.. that's all I can think of from memory.

Well, Bruce Timm DOES have a thing for his ladies, that's a given - but he couldn't really alter Batgirl and Ivy's hair, because their red hair is part of their trademark look.

Notice, however, that he gave Veronica Vreeland BLONDE hair in SUB-ZERO. What's up with that? Was she trying to have more fun or something?

:)

I think you get the most comic book and animated characters with black hair because the largest percentage of the human population has various shades of black. Followed (I think) by brown, blonde, and red.

I think brown might be the least used because it might just be easier to give a charter black hair than brown (and make them stand out more) or something.

Harley's Insane...and a blonde. Twas a funny line, but inacurate.

In TAS there were more blondes..Sumer Gleeson, Selina Kyle both spring to mind..

I dunno, blondes don't fit in with the Dark Batman Mythos..

The pre-Crisis Jason Todd had red hair and dyed it black. Black Canary actually had black hair and wore a blonde wig. She dyed it blonde when Birds of Prey started.

The point is well-taken. There are very few DC characters with brown hair, and the number with black hair is certainly disproportionate with the population.

Summer Gleeson looks like she has red hair to me dude.

On Veronica, her hair changes for more than just Sub-Zero, I remember an episode where her hair seemed pink.... Who knows.

I think because black hair is so commonly done for dark hair color, I really like the brown shine in Talia's hair. It's just "uncommon" in this animated universe. :p

The only three brown haired people I know are Talia, Matt, and Kyle. I for sure think that almost every superhero has black hair. To tell you honestly, black hair not as common as brown hair and blond hair. I don't particually like when people's eyes don't match their hair. For example blond lady has dark set of eyes. It's genetecly incoherent.

I actually know quite a lot of red haired people, odd huh? Well, hair color being a trademark of personality probably is a factor. Red hair is unusual and striking and can tell someone a lot about a character. When I think of a red head, I think of someone spunky. Blonde, a ditz, black, mysterious, and brown....I haven't a clue. Although that's all old stereotypical stuff, it fits for some characters. Though that is odd how a lot of the girls have red hair, or blonde...and the fact that Talia is one of the few brunettes is probably what makes her stand out so much among them. Most of the guys in comics seem to have black hair, or blonde hair....oddly enough, almost all the guys I know have black hair or blonde hair...

I know a lot of brown, light brown to very dark brown as well as black hair.

Yeah, there is a great number of people with black hair in the comics and the toons. The only people with brown hair that I can think of at the momet are Talia, Hal Jordan, and I think Guy Gardener. Barry Allen and Arthur Curry are blond.

Call me a cynic, but I think the prevalence of black hair is due to it being easy to draw and ink.

No, you aren't, because I had that same though myself! I was like, maybe most of them have black hair because black is used so much in comics, so it's jus easier or something. I mean, with any of the other colors, you have to outline it in black, shade and then put in the hair color. But with black, you just use the same pen or whatever for most of it.

The query is, did she dye the other half? :D
Brunettes are more common than blondes or redheads anyway--same with brown eyes being more likely to turn up than blue or green. Its the great genetic lotto....
My hair is brown. But the weird thing is, my beard has blonde highlights, and my sideburns look auburn if the light's right.
And Sandra Dee, actress, was a brown-eyed NATURAL blonde.

Yup. I'm just thinking it's easier. Plus, half the people mentioned wouldn't look right w/ any other color hair. Can you imagine a toe-headed Bruce

I think the characterization for each character is also what leads to certain colorings. Like optimal said, Bruce could never have any color but black- he's so dark and forbidding and vengeful (and we're used to him like this ;) )

Good point, especially for black and white comics.

Well, in the case of Indians, that may not be completely accurate. My brothers and I have brown hair, but it's so dark, it looks black. I'm not in the habit of getting in close and staring at peoples hair, so I'm not sure how many Indians actually have black hair. You might be right, but in my case it's brown. I'd imagine that might be the case for hell of a lot of others too.

Hmmm. Sounds like a question for some of our artists to address. Does black hair have a stronger visual punch, and does that explain why it is so prevalent in comics?

Yeah- but we're mainly talking about white people here- Bruce, Dick, Tim, Selina (comic version), Wonder Woman, etc.

You can say things like "the majority of people in the world have black hair" but that would be very misleading- we're talking about Gotham City, U.S.A. here, and in terms of white americans, brown hair is far more common than black.
