Now what? LOONEY TUNES WATER?
Just spotted in Los Angeles county supermarkets (GELSONS) is the latest Looney Tunes tie-in. The American Beverage Company and Warner Bros. have teamed up to create Looney Tunes Fortified Spring Water, a unique fortified spring water featuring America's favorite animated characters, including Bugs Bunny, Tasmanian Devil, Tweety and many others.
According to the press information "Looney Tunes Fortified Spring Water is a refreshing, unflavored and non-carbonated natural spring water fortified with Calcium and Fluoride, two major nutritional deficiencies in American diets. Calcium and Fluoride are essential nutrients in the development and maintenance of healthy teeth and strong bones."
Looney Tunes Fortified Spring Water is bottled in an 11.2oz PET bottle and sold in a full-color shrink-wrap 8-pack and two impactful trays (12- and 24-count). Each bottle label features a Looney Tunes character in three different poses and each multi-pack configuration contains various label combinations.
...and from the website of the American Beverage Company:
Pittsburgh, Pa., June 28, 2000 - American Beverage Corporation (ABC) has introduced a fortified spring water product featuring the world famous Looney Tunes™ characters that's sure to be a hit with kids of all ages.
"The popularity and recognizability of the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny and the Tasmanian Devil is sure to attract the attention of both kids and their parents who grew up with these characters," said Paul Beranek, vice president, sales & marketing for ABC. "In addition to the fun of the Looney Tunes characters the product is a high-quality spring water with essential elements of a healthy diet for kids and adults alike. This combination makes our product truly unique in the extremely fragmented, fast-growing, bottled-water category."
Available nationally, Looney Tunes Fortified Spring Water is bottled by Twin Mountain Spring Water Company, a division of ABC. The 11.2-ounce PET bottles are packaged in eight packs (msrp $2.99), 12 packs (msrp $3.99) and trays of 24 bottles (msrp $6.49). Both bottle labels and packaging feature different Looney Tunes characters including: Bugs Bunny, Tasmanian Devil, Sylvester, Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzales , Road Runner, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian and Wylie Coyote. _(Common typo, but why can't they get the name right? It's "Wile E.", not "Wily", "Wiley E.", "or "Wylie".)
Looney Tunes Fortified Spring Water is available now and will soon be on shelves in grocery retailers, drug chains and mass merchandisers.
"These characters are the most recognizable cartoon figures in the world, and Bugs Bunny ranks as the number one most recognized and universally loved character among all age groups including adults 18 years and older," said Tim Barr, director of marketing for ABC. "While these characters differentiate the product, it's important to note that the product is fortified spring water, not purified tap water, and provides essential elements for development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones."
Research indicates that two out of three kids do not get enough calcium in their diets, and the proliferation of bottled water has reduced the amount of fluoride kids once got through tap water.
"Our consumer research showed that parents really liked the fact that the spring water is fortified with calcium and fluoride, and they like the fun and frivolity represented by the Looney Tunes characters," Barr said. "As for kids, they thought water with the Looney Tunes characters was cool and tasted great. It was also apparent that the shape and size of the bottle is easy for kids to hold."
Under a licensing agreement with Warner Bros., ABC has the rights to all Looney Tunes characters. Plans call for other popular characters such as Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn and Elmer Fudd to appear on packaging in the future.
The national introduction of the product will be supported by a consumer sweepstakes offering grand prizes of family trips to the Warner Bros. Studios and Six Flags amusement park in Los Angeles. Other prizes include shopping sprees at Warner Bros. Studio stores and copies of Tweety Bird's new fully animated movie, "Tweety's High-Flying Adventure," which will be released September 12, 2000.
In addition, consumer trial will be driven through a coupon offering of 50 cents off 12- and 24-packs, or 50 cents off two eight-packs.
Beyond the popularity of Bugs Bunny, five of the top 10 recognized cartoon characters are Looney Tunes characters, according to Marketing Evaluations "Cartoon 'Q' Report," November 1999. In addition, Looney Tunes was ranked the #2 young/contemporary apparel and accessory brand in the 1999 Fairchild 100 consumer survey published by Women's Wear Daily.
"Clearly from a competitive standpoint we believe this will be a strong performing product in the fast-growth bottled-water category because of its unique product attributes," said Barr. "To be able to package our high-quality fortified spring water with such well-known characters as the Warner Bros. cartoon family offers an appeal to all age groups.
" Daily's Juice Products, Twin Mountain Spring Water Company and Sunburst Drinks are divisions of American Beverage Corporation. Headquartered just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa., ABC is the second-largest bottler of single-serve bottled juice drinks in the United States. ABC also makes Little Hugs Fruit Drinks and a complete line of Daily's Cocktail Mixes.
