Was an undercover Mary Sue?
The flawless, poorly-written, in-story avatar of the writer? No.
She wasn't perfect, she had human flaws, and was a decently written character.
I'd also fail to see how she could be a mary-sue since it was a real official television program, and not a fan-created fictional character. Mary Sue discussions concerning on-air programming are weak, in my opinion-- since people can't come to terms on agreeing what is and is not a mary sue.

I was led to believe that a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu, in the case of the fellas) is a fan made character (often a fictional version of the author) who is inserted into the cast of his/her favorite show and completely outshines the characters in the cast that he/she alleges to celebrate. In super hero/magic shows, they usually have more super powers than a toad has warts and they can run rings around everyone else on the team. Even the most powerful super villains on the show cower in fear at the mention of the Sue/Stu's name.
A canon character from the show can't be considered a Sue/Stu, because they aren't fan created.
Besides, Penny Proud hardly qualifies as a Mary Sue, because 1) She's an actual cast member, not a fan created character, and 2) As I recall, Penny has experienced her share of loss and humiliation. She's never pwned any of the other characters on the show, as far as I know.
It doesn't have to be fan-created to be a Mary Sue. The term refers to a characters that outshines the supposed main character and seems perfect in every way. No other qualifications are needed.

I think a Mary/Gary Sue also has to be a character that's outside of the main character/main villian regiment that can easily outshine and beat the main character who typically dosen't fit the style of the show. Though there are those that aren't just in fanfiction, finding them in an actual show is pretty rare. However since Penny Proud is the main character of her show, there is no way she can be classified as a mary sue of any kind. If there was another character in the proud family outside of the Prouds/main group of friends and bullies who came into the show, outsed Penny as main character and pretty much changed the show to be about her/him, then that would be a Mary/Gary sue. Not Penny herself.
Oh and 2500th post I guess.

That housekeeper that Trudy hired on the other handm would qualify more as a Mary Sue.

See, that's what I originally though. Someone at TV.com told me that only fan created characters can be considered Sues/Stus when I said that AMAZO from Justice League/Unlimited was a Gary Stu. If outshining the stars is the only requirement, then he is. I still wouldn't say that term applies to Penny Proud, though.

I think Penny Proud was a fairly well-rounded character, actually.
Someone at TV.com[...]Well, there's your problem.
OK,maybe that wasn't the right word. But she is little miss perfectionist. :yawn:Striving to do things well makes you a Mary Sue? I always thought my name was Sam. xD

Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: TNG is the example I always hear of an official Mary Sue character. He stinks of it.

So does Casey on Life with Derek, but being a perfectionist does not make you outshine the main character. Besides, Penny is one of the main characters on the show.
