Episode #17 (385-604) - Static Shaq
Original Airdate - February 16th, 2002

Virgil's excited when NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal, pays him a visit, but Shaq's perky public relations person constantly overbooks his schedule, leaving the two with no time to kick it. Complicating matters further, metahumans known as the ROUGHPAC have locked onto Static's scent and are tracking him all over town, in and out of costume.

I thought it was an entertaining ep. Heck, they made Shaq likeable! A spectacular feat considering I've disliked Shaq ever since he got into the league (plus the fact that I'm a 76ers fan and hate all things Lakers. And yes, I wholeheartedly supported the Kobe booing during the ASG. That was awesome.) But back on topic, I thought it was pretty interesting how they used the big nose guy to sniff out Static. Sniffy could be a real problem to Static keeping his secret identity under wraps. And if any of the villains got a clear look at Virgil's face (which I'm not sure they did), all they have to do is put 2 and 2 together, before they have the ability to sell out Static's id. Overall, I thought it was a fun ep, I give it a B.

Shaq still can't really emote too well--here he graduates from stiff to low-key--but he does have a point about keeping a public and private life seperate. Most celebs can't. That's why they crack up.
I wonder if Shaq actually does have a yippy, annoying P.R. person who runs him ragged?

I skipped Static to watch Fox Kids....

I think I watched Digimon (I forget what is up against what, cept that the shows I want to watch are up against each other...d'oh!)

I'll catch the repeat...

It's too bad we didn't get to see any Shaq free-throw shooting and Virgil laughing at his U.S. missile accurate aims...

It was an ok episode. Wasn't exactly the best one yet, but definitely not the worst. Shaq turned out to be better than I thought. The episode definitely had it's moments, but I don't think it's an episode that'll stand much once the season is over...

Shaq turned out to be pretty good. The only thing I'm worried about now is the Backstreet Boy that guest-stars in one of the upcoming episode...

This episode reran today right after "The Big Leagues" (Talk about that episode HERE (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17941)). It was odd watching these back to back as you could tell the obvious difference in animation. This episode had a more rubbery look and feel to it, as opposed to the previous episode. Well - anymore comments on this ep?

Not much else to say, except I did like the rastafarian theme music backing Kangor...and either he carries a lot of power in his feet, or the ground below the radio station was hollow--he kicked a hole in it with surprisingly little effort.
Also, were the people at the party dumb as dirt or just too polite to notice or point out that there's a guy with a big nose walking around sniffing their behinds like an overaffectionate dog? Not being the most tactful person, I'd have screamed and probably belted him....

I thought id bump this since this ep is on right now. Ill add some new comments when it ends.
edit: This was my favorite static celebrity guest episode. I thought Shaq was handled extremely well. I loved the end parts were static puts all the metal on Hyde and uses him for a basketball.

This was better than I thought it would be. Shaq wasn't over-used, they didn't turn him into a Mary Sue, and they didn't make him a damsel in distress either. He was there, he did what he could, and he acted like a human being.

I will confess, though- I studiously avoided the episode with the Backseat Boy (yeah, I know the real name, I'm just being snarky) and I'll probably do the same with Lil Whatshisface (this one I honestly don't remember).

I'd give it 3 1/2 stars. Not brilliant, not painful, and some honestly good moments.

Replayed again 2/4/04....

Not my particular fav episodes overall but out of the three celeb guest appearances (Lil Romeo and "Backstreet Bum", sorry loved the little tag Replikon give him) Shaq was overall decent. Wished there was more backstory on Kangor and Hyde, these seemed to be the more impressive Metahumans. (If they bring back Kangor though, get Sean Paul for his Background theme :D ). Shaq on the show anyway is appearently huge even in comparison to Hyde himself much less towering over Ferrett. "Me? Attack Shaq? you kidding?" Poor Ferrett... he's teh suck...

Burning Knight RavenYeah it'd be cool if they could get Sean Paul to do Kangor's music or mabey elephant man.

shaq= bad actor (cough-Steel-cough-Blue Chips-cough-Kazaam)
shaq= bad rapper (dictionary "bad", not slang "bad")
shaq= bad sneakers (people's exhibit a. the shaqnosis by reebok)

i didn't like this episode. and the season 4 nba-all star ep will probably be as bad as this one.

How weird was it that Static gave up his secret identity to Shaq just to impress him in an episode where his cover is almost blown? See, this is why I love Static. In other superhero shows like Batman and Spider-Man the alter ego thing is a big deal but not on Static Shock. Seriously anyone with half a brain could figure out Virgil's secret but dumb luck gets in their way. Still, this was not my favorite ep. I liked the animation, I liked Shaq, but, eh. I've definately seen better eps. *** out of *****
