View Full Version : Should JL Unlimited (Comic) continue as is or should they try rebooting it?

Personally, I thinking rebooting it would be benefical for both newcomers and fans of the shows as:
- It would be more simple to have a series fully in continuity with the show VS a series which goes between being canon and not canon.
- The whole issue 1 would certainly draw more readers to the title.
Maybe title it JLU.
I'd probably start with the first three issues reprinting Justice League Unlimited #33 and 37-38. That or reprint them in a Giant Sized #0, since they contribute to continuity.

I might be in the minority on this, but I dislike the concept of rebooting comic series. To steal your format, here is a list of rational and irrational reasons why.
- A new numbering system would confuse readers new to the comic world who would either think the comic is in "reruns" (especially if they reprint older issues) or that the older series is not worth reading since it's "outdated."
- Disregards all the hard work writers and artists have done over the years on the previous title, and disrespects it.
- I just really like to see big numbers on issue covers. You don't see them rebooting Detective because someone at DC obviously thinks the same way I do, otherwise that'd be on volume 4 or 5 by now. Same with Superman, which is technically Adventures of Superman, but as long as DC was canceling a Supes series, they wanted to keep the one with the most issues under its belt. The practice of sequentially numbering issues is a testament to the series that shows how long it has endured.
As for the whole in/out of continuity thing, I can't believe I'm saying this, but is it really that important? JLU is published as a kids' title, and while hardcore readers may also enjoy it, I think if they wanted to pull their act together and decide to be totally in-continuity or totally out-of-continuity, they would just say "Okay, from now on, let's do it this way" without going through the trouble of a reboot. For that matter, how often does an issue of JLU refer back to its older issues, anyway?
I'm not a frequent reader of the title so I can't argue as effectively as others here, but this is just my opinion as a general comic reader who has seen one too many reboots.
But if a reboot DOES happen, I support your idea to rename it simply "JLU." It echoes the volume 2 (or was it 3?) reboots of JLA and JSA, and it would clearly distinguish between the first volume of the series and the second.

I've never been big on continuity or rebooting/reinventing an established concept.
I like the book as it is currently without the fanfare associated with the show. References can be made to an episode to it but it's not necessary a sticking point to me nor should it be.

i think JLU is pretty much dead and even if they did have a whole bunch of continuity in the comic and rebooted it, i highly doubt many more people would read it since the show has been off the air for 18 months.

I wish they would reboot it, but obviously it's on the way to the chopping block. I really miss the old DCAU comics...

I'm not suggesting constant reboots, just one time to get a fresh start. It would pretty much be the next Batman Adventures.

I was hearing somewhere that they might cancel this title. Any word? :robin:

We haven't heard DC say "Yes, JLU is cancelled and will end with issue # blank", but that aside, yes, it's cancelled and will end in the spring.
Personally, I'd love to see the title continue with a new steady creative team made up of people who worked on The Batman Adventures and Superman Adventures. A reboot would be a nice alternative...but I don't see how calling it JLU would really be a fresh start. Unless you could rename it or approach it from a different angle, you'd basically be asking DC to reboot a title they clearly have no faith in.
Ever since Batman Adventures ended, DC has proven that their only interest as far as cartoon tie-in comics lies in making those comics kid-friendly and kid-aimed. Teen Titans Go! only gets away with being interesting because J Torres makes it a point to work in as much continuity, character-development and genuine drama as he can. I'm sure that if he weren't writing it, it would have been about as much fun as JLU has been.
I don't like knocking the title, but it's been more of a testing ground for new writers and artists than anything else. Not that I'm sure the artists and writers are new to comics, mind you. Since I don't follow the mainstream DC I'd really be the last person to know.
Once JLU and TTG! end, I won't really follow anything. Which sucks.

I just have to agree with what Disneyboy says above and I too am upset with the JLU comic coming to an end. It's a shame really since it was our last outlet to the Timmverse (which did have a long and healthy run already). I'd love to see the title rebooted with an title that covered the entire DCAU where we'd revisit certain series and characters but I doub that will happen. I am sure once JLU is done that's all we'll get. It's just a shame to see a title with such potential not only not fully live up with it but be dumped like it doesn't matter.

I'm going to miss this title. I wish that it did continue with a different group of writers/artists. I hope they are not going to replace it with a different series. There is nothing I can think of that can replace JLU.
Is TTG going to end too or are they redoing themselves? I take it you don't like Batman Strikes comic book series or Legion of Superheroes?

I am going to miss this title also... because it was like getting a little bit of the DCAU on a monthly basis.
Personally the only, and most likely last animated comic i will read from now on is The Batman Strikes.
I would love for JLU to become a kind of 'Adventures in the dc universe' but with DC, yeah right, it will never happen.

Adoptedbatpuppy, I'm not at all against the Legion or Batman Strikes books. J Torres is a great writer, and from what I saw of this Wonder Woman-inspired issue, the artist on the book is great too. As for Strikes, Chris Jones' artwork is really really good. So I respect both books...
...but I don't follow them. I don't like jumping from continuity to continuity, and picking up new shows and comics to follow every year. I invest. I give serious thought to the creative works I examine, and that said, JLU hasn't been provoking in the least. It could have been, but the editorial mandate has been "tell team stories about learning to be yourself" and that's one-note, boring and limiting. Not fun at all. I know these characters and plot-lines can be continued or resolved. I don't see why DC wouldn't seize the opportunity to cash in on the fan love for JLU (like Mattel has) and actually make this book comparable to the series.
*sigh* I'm just not interesting enough in being a comic book collector that I'll join up with another series once JLU ends. I liked B:TAS, and followed along from there, in large part because the stories and characters were weaved through several shows.
*double sigh* Teen Titans Go! often has great stories and art so I pick it up once and a while despite again being kid-aimed.
