View Full Version : So how many 360s have died in the past 2 weeks?

My 360 took a poop last night, and it blows. However, I do not seem to be the only one, for I was on the 360 forums last night, and it seems like 3 other people there had theirs die to. Then on another forum, three other people have had their systems die in the last 2 weeks, and one of my friends' system died last week. Some of from the red lights, others said they encountered glitches where the system either just shut off or froze up with 1s and 0s striped across the screen. Has anyone else here had their system die on them in the last 2 weeks? This seems really rediculous and makes me wonder if I should even bother getting another one or just say good bye to my favorite games and get rid of the thing in its entirety.

Hm... If Microsoft ends up losing a lot of money in the XBox 360, then maybe it might affect Rare, and it might lead to Rare going back to Nintendo, or maybe changing sides again, and siding with Sony and the Playstation 2 and 3.

Microsoft owns Rare, they can't just "leave".

Didn't Microsoft also own Bungie?

Different sort of own. Microsoft puts a lot of money in Bungie, but they never out right bought them. It's very similar to how they did the same thing to Bioware with Mass Effect and Jade Empire. They did however flat out buy Rare.

I want an Xbox 360 but it's getting harder to tell how widespread the failure problem is. Go to any message board and you'll see people ranting about how their system died on them, but what percentage of the 360 community does that actually constitute? Should I pick up a 360 and just assume it'll brick on me down the line?

Well I can say this, I was let in the back warehouse at a local Best Buy a few weeks ago, and they had at least 22 360s back there that were being sent to the district warehouse as defective units. And the guy told me those were just from that day and the day before.

I think my 360 is on its way out, its having a hard time reading games and DVDs. It even makes some sort of screaching noise when I turn the system on or open the disc tray. And I just got it last Christmas, WTF man? I've been meaning to call Microsoft about it but I haven't gotten around to it.

Have Microsoft issued any official statement?

Microsoft now gives everyone a 3 year warranty with every 360 console. So even the launch systems (if there are any still working) are still covered for another year. Also the newer 360s are supposed to run cooler to prevent overheating. I traded in my 360 a little over a year ago and haven't regretted it since. Not to sound like a fanboy or anything, but I haven't had a single problem with my PS3 since I bought it in July. It runs quiet and smooth and is definitely the best traditional console on the market. Wii is best overall in my opinion but the PS3 is best as far as traditional gaming goes.

Let me get this straight: THAT many X-Box 360 consoles shorted out and broke down within THAT short of a time span at the same time within your neighborhood?
That's a really odd occurence and coincidence. Within a month or two is reasonable, but within a day or two of synchronized kaput is really strange.
On the upside, the warranty should cover it, so in a couple of weeks, all those people who sent them will have new X-Box consoles, right? And Microsoft will obviously do whatever it takes to give the X-Box people their satisfaction, so on the upside, all those defective units will get fixed in a short time.

Only Microsoft really knows for sure what the failure rate is, and they (for obvious reasons) have chosen not to share those numbers with the general public. Anyone who tries to give you a number ("30% of 360's get the RRoD within six months" or whatever) is guessing. It may be an educated guess or an ignorant guess, but it's still a guess.

Well, for what it's worth, though my Xbox 360 has never given me problems (and I got it about 6 months after launch) two of the three friends I have that have 360's have had to send them back - one friend only once so far, the other three times. Never seen that with any other console.
But, like I said, mine so far has run like a dream and it's older than many of my friends', so I can't complain too much. Although knowing my luck, mine will work fine until just AFTER the extended warranty expires.

Actually, Microsoft did own Bungie. They let them become independent because most of the designers threatened to leave, most likely. So, instead of having a name with no talent, they have a deal where they get first dibs on publishing all of Bungie's games.

Not really, Bungie can make whatever it wants now without Microsoft's consent or approval. Microsoft just gets first dibs.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft owns the copyrights to the name Halo too, though I might be mistaken.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft owns the copyrights to the name Halo too, though I might be mistaken. They do, so any port of Halo to another console would have to be titled "Schmalo" and feature "Schmaster Schmief".
