View Full Version : Which Anime Would You Adapt as a "Telenovela".

When I say "telenovela" I specifically refer to a Spanish-language soap opera which eventually has a conclusion, unlike American soap operas which go on forever, and ever. So is there an anime series that you like to adapt or see adapted as a "telenovela"?
Well, what do you say, "amigos"?

Don't know much about telenovelas, but if they're anything like Bumblebee Man's show on The Simpsons, may I suggest they adapt Oshiri Kaigiri Mushi?

Mobile Suit Gundam. Its practically a soap opera as it stands.

Gravitation, reset in the Tejano music scene.

Pull a random season of Love Hina out. They're about the same, so it would work.

You know, Gravitation would actually probably be a fairly good candidate for a Telenovela rework. Lots of passion, backstabbing, intrigue, and all of that with a certain over the top tinge. Yeah, I'd watch that.

I'd say Nana or Kare Kano would translate well for a telenovela. A lot of josei would, really. Some shojo, but probably not as much.

Eh, Clamp School Stuff would probably play in telenovela-form. It's just over-the-top enough to work.

Karl, what do you think of something like Gunslinger Girl?
I think the only person who needs to remake Gunslinger Girl is Robert Rodriguez.

Yeah, but that wouldn't so much be a telenovela as an awesome action movie. It'd probably get an NC-17 by default though (kids shooting terrorists? that's a media controversy.)

FUNi gives the DVDs of the anime a TV-14. Though certainly controversial, nothing in the show is more graphic than your average "torture porn" film. Then again, the MPAA rarely makes much sense, and if they respond really negatively to the general themes, an extreme rating is possible.
Evangelion. 65 one-hour episodes later, it will still be messed up and unsolved. And, since I have seen some telenovelas and know who some actors/actresses are, I could see either Adamari Lopez, Michelle Vieth, or Angelica Vale (who played Mexico's Ugly Betty) as Misato.

The MPAA is has always been harsh when comes to violence and kids, especially violence from kids. Plus, the anime blunts some of what was depicted in the manga, which is part of why it skates by at TV14. A more shot for shot adaptation of the manga would definitely end up in NC-17 territory.

The closest comparison scene I can think of to the GSG violence would be the Kill Bill anime scene. But, that was animated... So Gunslinger LA would get a harsher rating.

And with Kill Bill barely squeaking by with an R-rating, that pretty much means a GSG LA honestly adapted would be NC-17. I mean, just depicting Triela and Henrietta's respective backstories in a fashion that matched the manga would probably be enough to make it one of the most contriversial films of the year.

Alright, "amigos". "¡Basta ya!" ("That's enough!"), as they would say. We need to stay on topic here.
I often imagine Hana Yori Dango being a telenovela (FYI: there is a TV drama version in Taiwan, as well as a Japanese one). This may sound silly, but I once envisioned Yu Yu Hakusho as a novela as well.

EDIT:
While rash in my initial ideas as to which would make a good telenovela I can still maintain my choice of Whistle! as being a canidate for if I remember correctly the girls' team did like to chase after boys, or at least one of them had the hots for the boy teams' captain.
Good lord, it's been forever since I last read Whistle!

My post is one of those examples of not paying much attention on my part. Telenovela should be short, shouldn't they?

Fruits Basket would make a nice telenovela
Honey and Clover X3 would too
Ashita No Nadja would make a great telenovela, yet I wonder how many people here have heard of that anime.

*raises hand* I have! ^^; I agree; it would make an interesting telenovela. I've only seen a few episodes, but I found it to be a really cute and pleasant show.
I wonder how they'd keep the European atmosphere, though...
It's not an anime, but the manga, "Life", is prime telenovela material. It's really sad and intense, I'd like to see how that'd work out.

*Goes to delete*Uh, no. That wasn't the point I was making at all. None of the series you mentioned, with the exception of MSG, fit the bill of a telenovela. Think of it this way, what anime would make a good soap opera? That's basically what a telenovela is. Though, even MSG wouldn't be a good idea because of wtfmecha. But Whistle? Hell no. PoT? Nuh uh. Eyeshield? Uh, no. Yu-Gi-Oh!? Nuu. Sports is a horrible idea for a telenovela. Needs moar drama and romance. So try editing your post one more time, k, kid?

Guillermo Del Toro might be able to pull it off to. That wouldn't even get an NC-17, it would just go out as unrated and be an art house release. No major studio would even think about touching that, nor would a distributor. And I'm not sure I would really want to watch someone put real kids that age through even simulated stuff like that. Some thing need to stay animated.
Reaching way back into the old school, Touch or possibly Ranama could work, as would Urusei Yatsura.

I've seen a couple myself. Stuff like Prince of Tennis, Slam Dunk, Captain Tsubasa and other similar sport shows could actually be translated into telenovela form, but they'll have to emphasize on the romantic side of those animes in order to make a proper translation. I agree that as is, those animes don't really fit the bill, but they could with some tweaking and still keeping the general premise.

I wonder how they'd keep the European atmosphere, though...Ashita No Nadja gets extremely dark in the second half of the series after a certain character gets introduced. It's filled with betrayals, ploys, and nearly everything else that makes a telenovela.
I suppose they could change the Europe setup to something local, but they'll have to change the nationalities of all the characters.

[SIZE=2]The basic formula to most every telenovela in 3 easy steps is:
[SIZE=2]1. Introduce pretty girl and handsome boy.
2. They fall in love.
3. Spend the next 150 episodes thinking up the most insane outrageous reasons and ways to keep them apart (anything!)
Apply formula to any genre and you have a telenovela.

Rurouni Kenshin had plenty of romance in it, did it not? While it might be a little bit more action packed then most romance stories I'd think a condensed version of the story could work, although monetary issues might be a problem.

That would probably do better as a Taiga drama.
I could see Fruits Basket, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e and Honoey and Clover doing well in the telenovela format.

You forgot the happy ending. That's not a requirement. Plenty of telenovelas end with the main character getting killed.

MAJIDE!?
Oh no, wait. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo would defintely NOT work as a novela...or would it?....
BUT seriously, folks. I wonder if something like "Hokuto no Ken" would work. I suppose Dr. Slump might work, but the comedy elements would have to take a backseat to the romantic tension between Senbei Norimaki (Arale's "father"), and Midori Yamabuki (Arale's teacher). Although, we shouldn't forget that some novelas were actually designed for family viewing (no joke).
