Awhile ago, I recall Bruce Timm cited "Abin Sur" as the "problem" for why the S:TAS Kyle Rayner could not appear on the Justice League. Does anyone remember the way he elaborated on this explanation? Better yet, does anyone have a link to the interview in which he said so?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

His problem was:

Abin Sur was GL of Sector 2814 during the STAS GL eps. And if HE was GL of 2814, how could John Stewart have been the GL of 2814 for ten years or so? The answer is simple. There ARE no sectors. GL's are intergalactic space cops, who fight evil wherever it arises. Abin Sur was near Earth only because of Sinestro. Therefore, John Stewart could be A GL, Abin Sur could be A GL, and so could Kyle Rayner.

I think Timm is CREATING this problem intentionally. I don't see that one actually exists.

It's been said that John Stewart has been a Green Lantern for over ten years, but not necessarily GL of Sector 2814. That was Abin Sur's territory, but when he died John must have got it. It seems pretty simple to me.

But I'd still like to know which episode said "John's been GL for ten years." I realize it's been said in interviews, but when it comes down to it, if they haven't already specified "ten years" on screen then there is no reason that they can't change it unless they don't want to. Personally, I just don't think Timm wants to.

Apparently he's been there for a good while. John is a veteran of sorts, so we're to think. I personally don't think the problem lies of Abin Sur, it is Kyle. How can you explain what happened to him. Bruce is obviously thinking that as a whole we can pretty much think of STAS as another universe, which is fine, but we'll see. Cause that General in Origins wasn't happy to see Superman, and that made me think that this was a continuation of STAS/TNBA and should be.

I also know that Bruce has said in that interview that if anyone had any suggestions on how to explain and do a Kyle Rayner episode of JL then he was listening. I hope he is, cause the only real suggestion is to bring in Sinestro again. The sad thing is, Hal doesn't even exist.

Poor guy, first he goes mad, then he loses all his television and film rights.

I've said numerous times in other posts that the easiest solution to this is just have John as the GL of Earth and Kyle as the GL of the sector. DC comics even had this as a solution for a while in the late 80's or so. I mean, Earth has a huge group of power potential, more so than any other planet, and has a GL assigned to it specifically for that reason.

Personally, I think it would be more interesting to introduce Kyle as the "GL that nobody likes". I think something happened after Kyle appeared in S:TAS, and he was either stripped of the ring, or sent far away to do menial GL work. Ok, that does sound a little like the recent GL epsode with the whole "You did something wrong and must redeem yourself thing", but I think that if and when Kyle becomes the JL Green Lantern, unless there is a good reason to bring him back and interesting plot surrounding him, his character will fall flat and the public will be insulted that Timm and co. brought in a white guy for no good reason to replace a black guy.

I thought they sent Kyle to some sector of space for training in S:TAS. So if that's the case then perhaps he's still there and the council has assigned John to Earth.

I must admit I had hoped to see Kyle at the trial.

I don't think Kyle should replace John Stewart. I like John Stewart because he's different and the relationship with Flash is cool. I can't picture Kyle and Flash together, that just seems like mixing Sprite and 7-Up, there is no difference. Although I think if Kyle should make an appearance he should be more adult and more serious than before kinda in-between John and Flash. Also, I think if he made an appearance the writers should bring up the issue of why John doesn't make more interesting things of his ring.

I still think they should update Kyle with what happened to Hal Jordan. He should become Parallax. He should give us the feeling that something has definitely happened since last we saw him. It's kinda like seeing a kid you knew before he went to the military and after.
