What is your favorite secret government agency from a television series?

The only rules are that you can only pick one favorite and you must say why! No lists without reasons but you can list runner-ups, if you like.

I always like the top secret agencies on television shows. They always have the best gadgets and coolest characters.

My favorite: Special Unit 2 (from the show of the same name)

I mean, how can you not love SU2? They carry big guns with lots of explosive ammo. They are not above beating information out of suspects -- in fact, they have a good time doing so! They also are not above planting evidence or committing criminal acts so long as it's in the name of doing their job. Nick O'Malley is the coolest and Kate Benson is hot. Plus, they have Carl the Gnome, one of the funniest informants around.

My runner-up would have to be the Secret Service of the 1880's (The Wild Wild West). How cool is it to have a private train as your rolling headquarters? Artemus Gordon always makes great gadgets and James West is the toughest brawler and fastest draw around.

I would have to go with the Initiative from Buffy.

I don't know that the CIA and FBI really count, as their existence is not a secret.

Never saw SU2, though one of my brothers was a huge fan. I love the concept of Men in Black (even before the movie came out) and the series was really fun. I even enjoyed MIIB, so sue me. So that's my pic. Their suave attitude is probably the biggest attraction. Tommy Lee Jones was perfect for the movie role.

Hypnos from Digimon Tamers: Echelon meets MiB meets Matrix agents. For being on a show like Digimon, this agency was quite a surprise. It feels like a guenuine black-ops organization. Filled with Men in Black, Top secrect HQ's in public buildinga, dark experiments, strange technology, and even had conspiracy theorists claiming it existed.

Plus, the characters were really neat. Yamaki was really nasty, cold, obsessive, and efficient about his job. Reilly and Tally had their own peronal lives to deal with, which was funny to hear about their boyfriend problems while working.

I'd like to work for the O.S.I. (Office of Scientific Intelligence) from The Six Million Dollar Man and the original Bionic Woman. Hands down, they have the best health plan. Get banged up in the field and they'll rebuild you as a super-powered cyborg.

The one Bashir infiltrared in Deep Space Nine, or Cadmus.

True, but the fictional divisions on the show are, aren't they ?

Oooh, CADMUS! Good one!

Ah, Section 31. Proving that even the Federation has a bad side. They too were awesome.

Speaking of which, I'm not surprised anyone put the NID. They're were rather ineffective as a covert agency.

Indeed. If you're going to use unsavory means, at least have the decency to come up with real results.

Does Kronos from Bio Booster Armor Guyver count? I know they have a corporate front but the real stuff is rather covert.

I put Special Unit 2 Damn! That chick is hot!

Nick O'Mallie from Lois and Clark is so funny, and the monsters are hilarious. I love when they try to interogate a sphynx and he keeps asking riddles. It was wrong to cancel this.

That's good reasoning . My favorite is the one where the virgins were getting stalked. Slasher movie reversal. I'd actually be dead! What about the BPRD from Hellboy?

Well, it's not so much the agencies that are secret. It's what they do that's secret. Sure, everybody knows about the FBI, CIA, NSA, etc., but not so much what they do. Especially when you're talking about the X-Files division of the FBI!

Or what about MIB? Okay, maybe most people do not think it exists but people have heard of men in black working for the government (or at least somebody). The Chicago Police know about their own division called Special Unit 2...but none of them knows what SU2 does. The same seems to go for Torchwood -- the police seem to know about them, just not what they do.

And what's so "secret" about the Secret Service? My guess is it's what they do that's secret, not their existence.

Some agencies are actually good at keeping their entire existence a secret but not many. Probably Bureau of Lost is the most secretive on my list; only two kids even know about it's existence, though I suppose it was originally known in government, too. They are probably so obscure that they've been forgotten in all of the red tape.

On the other hand, take an organization like, I dunno, Ghostbusters (The Real Ghostbusters). Not only are they publicly known, and their individual indentities publicly known, but what they do is publicly known. They don't try to keep the existence of ghosts or the supernatural a secret. Heck, they even advertise it on television!

Anyways, my bad for not being more specific. I guess if I was being more specific, I'd say it's any agency that does secret stuff that the public doesn't know about. More specifically, they are usually involved in combatting or policing super-villains, evil scientists, terrorist organizations, monsters, aliens, and other supernatural creatures. Oh yeah, and spying or guarding VIP's probably falls in there somewhere, too. What can I say? It's hard to define secret activities! :D

Special Unit 2 was an awesome show. Funny, lots of action, and it knew no bounds. I would recommend buying it on DVD if there was such a thing. I've seen eighteen of the nineteen episodes and they were all great.

As for MIB, I was never much a fan of the movies but the first one was okay. I loved the series. Or I should say, I loved season one since that's all that was ever released. I've never seen the later seasons because they've never been released and nobody re-runs the show. I'm actually rooting for an MIB3 movie in hopes that somebody will release the rest of the show.

This sounds interesting. What is it? A movie or a TV series? Animated, I presume, or should I say anime?

That reminds me of some other secret organizations that I forgot in the poll: STNJ from Witch Hunter Robin and The Global Alliance from The Roswell Conspiracies. Not that it changes my vote -- Special Unit 2 all the way!

Arrgh! Thanks, that's another that I forgot. Though I never really watched the original Bionic Woman. I think on the new show, Jaimie works for the Berkut Group (sp). They are an interesting organization, to be sure, but they need better internal security! I think they are privately funded, too. Was OSI private or government?

The one Bashir infiltrared in Deep Space Nine, or Cadmus.

Oops, yeah, Cadmus should be on the list. Not my favorite, I'd still go with Special Unit 2, but I loved the Cadmus arc and their special ops (Task Force X).

That's good reasoning . My favorite is the one where the virgins were getting stalked. Slasher movie reversal. I'd actually be dead!

Well, Special Unit 2 was a great show for many reasons but it didn't hurt that Kate Benson was hot, too. :nurse: I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite but I'd probably go with The Invisible (I think) just for the banshee interrogation scene. I also liked when Karl tried to hide in the mailbox! That show always made me laugh out loud.

What about the BPRD from Hellboy?

Well, technically, it's supposed to be television shows. But why not?

Wouldn't the SGC in Stargate SG-1 count as a secret agency??

I voted 'others' since I'll go with Hypnos as well. Yamaki's zippo flicking is legendary :p

No. The Star Gate Command falls unders the Unifed Space Command of the U.S. Air Force, which is a branch of the Armed Forces which falls under the overall jursidiction of the Department of Defense. It is a military command, and not a covert agency.

This sounds interesting. What is it? A movie or a TV series? Animated, I presume, or should I say anime? It's from Digimon, 3rd season.

Hypnos is basically Japan's answer to Echelon. At first, it was just a covert electronic survelance agency, but latter shifted its focus on studying, capturing and hiding the existance of Digimon. It's Director became so obessed, he plotted to destroy any digimonhe came across.

Ah yes, STNJ is another one my faves.
