After watching "Confederate Honey" from Goopy's site, I had an observation and a question....

There is a scene with a few soldiers in it like this:

and I immediately recognized the second from the left as being a Henry Binder caricature. My question is whether any of the other soldiers are supposed to resemble certain staff members?
(I have a suspicion or two but I'd like to hear some other opinions...).

Any opinions?

To Binder's left is Ray Katz...

The other two I recognize from the T.Hee "Season's Greetings" caricature - BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER THEIR NAMES!

Danged Oldtimer's disease...

The short one is definitely Melvin "Tubby" Millar (almost certainly uncredited co-writer of this cartoon with Ben Hardaway and Jack Miller). The tall one on the right hmmm...

I'm not too good at identifying caricatures, but I think the one on the far right is a caricature of one of the McKimson brothers... I don't know, I'm just guessing.

Okay NOW I know who the one on the far right is... As PREPOSTEROUS as it sounds... it's PAUL J. SMITH !!! Now WHY Paul Smith is depicted in the Freleng group is beyond me (he was formerly a Friz animator) but by this point he was with Tex. Might be an old loyalty and tribute of Friz to his longtime co-worker, orrrr Smith may have been dragooned in to help on this cartoon....

Thanks for the answers youse guys!

I was pretty sure about Millar being the 1st on the left but I don't know that I couldn't have figured out Paul J. Smith! Thanks Tim!

Do you agree that the other one is Katz? It seems possible...

There is a good possibility that it is intended to be Ray Katz. Comparing these caricatures (*presumably actually done by Friz himself) to those by T. Hee back in Dec. 1936 is intriguing... From what Freleng said he was SO grateful to be asked back from MGM that he was very ANXIOUS to please... The Katz drawn by T. Hee back in 1936 is almost ruthless...fish-faced, bug-eyed, thick-lipped. This one is vastly toned down, almost to the point of not being a caricature. The Paul Smith is much more faithful to Smith's real appearance though. I can't remember if there are any other soldiers in the line... Are there?? (Gotta re-watch I reckon)
