View Full Version : What if the Big 4 Networks were still our only source of New Toons?

Saturday Mornings and syndicated weekday afternoon/mornings. The ONLY times kids pre-mid 90's (without Cable at least) could get their new toon fix.
But what if, today, Cartoon Network, Nick,Toon Disney, and Boomerang were only showcases for vintage programming (Or in Nick and Disney's case, they only had their live action stuff as the only new programming).
If Fox, ABC, NBC, and CBS were the only Networks in existance still to air Saturday Morning cartoons from 7 to 12 (or 8 to 1 depending on where you are), and they had FIRST crack at new shows/concepts, what do you think their lineups would look like today?
And I mean if they hadn't fallen into showing news shows or pimping out their schedule to Disney/Dic/Qubo/anime repeats and 'Educational content'.
What shows would make the cut that originally aired on Disney/Nick/CN, and how would they be changed from what we got in the final product?
Personally, I could see Powerpuff Girls ending up on NBC (with toned down violence, of course), Power Rangers continuing on Fox, and Out of Jimmy's Head on CBS. ABC, without it's endless Disney repeats, would probably still be running Bugs Bunny/Tweety today.

I could easily see hollow celebrity-based and movie-based cartoon shows still being produced.
They Call Me Macarena (1997), ABC The woman from the famous music video is cartoonified as a 12-year-old Latina girl who learns social morals and the importance of family each week.
Britney TV (2001), NBC Live-action shots of Britney Spears bookend this limited-animation DiC series where a cartoon Britney travels around the world giving little girls beauty tips. Several years later, a creepy man in his forties who demands the show be re-released trolls Toon Zone for several months.
Scooter the Amazing Scooter (2003), CBS A talking scooter with attitude, shades, and urban slang brightens the life of an African-American boy in what vaguely looks like Harlem.
Bridge to Terabithia: The Series (2007), Fox Kids This stays true to the promotional advertising, not the movie itself, and chronicles the adventures of two children in a REAL fantasy world.
I'll be back to make more.

Please, you know very well that in that kind of show she'd either be some sort of spy OR she would solve mysteries.

The big networks were not the only source of cartoons. A lot was supplied by independent stations.

At the risk of sounding bitter, the question is more like "What if the big networks' Saturday line up wasn't thought up by the station owners' lazy, greedy relatives who want to make the most money with the least effort?"
Even with CN, Indie stations and broadcast networks were able to come up with competitive programming. Sure, WB buying Pokemon helped to kill syndication. And CBS's "let's not even try" Nick Jr. line up of 1998 was a sign of things to come. But even then, the networks were trying.
I say if NBC or CBS came up with an intellegent, well thought out TV show that could comply with FCC regulations that was enjoyable on many age group levels, they could compete with the up to 3 cable networks that just rerun the same thing in the afternoon. It's just laziness and greed at this point.
But back to the what if....

WOW! In your what if simulation, DIC animation sure gets a lot of work.
Honestly, we'd see a new Spiderman series before the one that's supposed to come out. one that would have happened between the first and second movie, which would have been different than the MTV series.
We'd also see a lot of the Marvel cartoons that air on CN go to those networks sooner.
We'd probably see Nintendo make a new Mario series based on the new games that is CGI.
And a lot of the proposed ideas for cartoons, including the new Garfield series, which was just cut down to a DTV feature now, come to fruition. We'd see more animation jobs, and some odd creations on Network TV, and not lose new talent to compete with the already overstocked internet.

The Adventures of POG (1995, CBS) The POG Inc. mascot is animated, given a few friends who look similar to him, and has a ton of 11-minute escapades in his homeland of POG Island.
Sandler's Sanctuary (1999, CBS) A live-action kiddie show hosted by Adam Sandler. Contrary to what many assume, it isn't ripping off Pee Wee's Playhouse. It's actually stealing and re-writing scripts directly from "Pryor's Place," which preceded Pee Wee, and since nobody remembers that one, it's a free ride.
Furby and Friends (1999, Syndication) About a cheery gang of Furbies that lives in a bright, rainbow-filled sunny fantasy land. In most markets, it's stuck at 7 am.
L'il Jerry (1997, NBC) NBC's habit of adapting its prime-time hits as children's programming continues with this Film Roman show about a small Jerry Seinfeld at a day care center. Kramer, Elaine and George are here in kid form as well, only barely recognizable personalitywise (the only thing Kramer continues to do from the original show is enter through doors loudly). The Soup Nazi has been renamed the "Soup Grumpy-Puss."
Captain P the Playstation Master (1999, NBC) In this recycled series, Captain P buys a defective Sony product (what are the odds) and is zapped into Playstationland, where he teams up with Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Blasto, that completely forgotten "Rascal" character, and a completely out-of-character Lara Croft that sounds like a valley girl, carries laser guns and is almost completely flat-chested.

Since there were lots of "kiddie" versions of prime time shows i can see the following happening:
The School: The adventures of the "office" cast as elementary schoolers
Veronica Mars: The early years: Veronica Mars as a pre-teen detective, complete with a theme song by Hillary Duff
House and Son: An out-of-continuity spin-off of "House" where he adopts a sassy wisecracking kid who fronts his own rock band
(yeah, i know the kiddified prime-time shows kind of died off in the early 80s, but i wouldnt put it past the networks to try it again)

While the others were funny jokes, this one actually sounded like it could happen, scarily enough. Thank Toutatis it didn't.
Apparently, CBS did have a new series based on Care bears that didn't get much press. Looks outright terrible, but then again, i hate those damn bears. Shoulda given Mr. Beastly his own spinoff show.

It would probably air randomly throughout the day (seeing that Furbies were infamous for having that (creepy) defect when they would just turn on and say one of their lines for no explainable reason).:anime:

You know, I saw some of that horrendous GPK cartoon on Youtube a while back. Saved me from p**ing away 20 bucks, I'll tell you that.
I bet a lot of Nelvana shows would pop up on SatAm. I could see PBS dropping Cyberchase due to low ratings, and having it go to CBS with new episodes, and no "Cyberchase for real" segment

Cyberchase was apparently originally produced for broadcast on commercial television, judging from that there's commercial break fade-outs present in the episodes (with the "For Real" segment presumably meant to pad out the time commercials would've taken up); that, and the tone of the show doesn't seem completely "PBS"-like (considering the show's about fighting a villain who's out to get rid of a [literal] head of state... :-p ).

There was a Furby TV special in 2005 on Nickelodeon called Furby Island. It was about a girl named Maddie and her explorer parents visiting Furby Island in an attempt to find a lizard. Dr Conquest, however, wants to steal the Furbies. Will he?
I have this movie on DVD, but I haven't watched it.

Actually, thanks for bumping this....the two posts above are some of my all-time favorites. I need to write some more. Here's what we'd be seeing this past season...
Justin Beaver (NBC, 2010) The CGI adventures of a superstar beaver who also goes to a regular school full of anthropmorphic animals and hides his true identity. His catchphrase, "THAT'S BEEVALICIOUS!" is said about once every two minutes.
Angry Birds (ABC, 2010) The ubiquitous birds continue their eternal war against the Green Pigs. Despite the name, only one bird seems truly angry all the time -- the rest are varying personalities (Happy Bird, Grumpy Bird, Stinky Bird that Makes A Ton of Fart Jokes). Happy Bird is a Spongebob ripoff who gets most of the screentime. One bird delivers a special PSA message at the end of every episode, very very loosely tied to the plot.
Parks and Recreation in the Army (NBC, 2010) Sergeant Leslie Knope commands a team of bumbling privates. Most of the plotlines are identical to the ones in the Angry Birds cartoon.
Sheldon's Science Lab (CBS, 2010) The same character from CBS's The Big Bang Theory teaches children science with a wacky socially awkward twist in this E/I live-action program. Interspersed with Flash-animated shorts about Sheldon as a kid.
The New Smurfs (CBS, 2011) Coming this fall...riding on the coattails of the massive hit movie! They're just as you remember them, only more cheaply animated and with a pop-culture-referencing ATTITUDE!

I could live with that, with some modified changes, with Saturday mornings exclusive only to CBS, ABC and NBC, and 3 hours of afternoon daytime, Monday through Friday to Fox. Wouldn't it be nice if that could be possible, because imagine the possibilities. An animated Indiana Jones series from Lucasfilm Ltd., Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Animation on CBS, an animated Sheena, Queen of the Jungle series, from Disney Enterprises on ABC or Warner Bros. hour-long reboot of the Laff-a-lympics on NBC. Or how about this possibility, new episodes of Heckle and Jeckle. to run, during the week, on Fox. If that could be a possibility and like the way I described, it could be a win-win situation for all parties involved. We can dream, can't we, but the reality of is, ABC has moved cartoon programming to its Disney cable outlets and we're already aware of both Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, progtramming original programming on Saturday mornings. Maybe until that day becomes a reality, they can program on Saturday mornings the way the broadcast networks did, a long time ago.

Here is my list of shows, the last two are English dubs of anime, and only the last anime is based on a real anime called Kirarin Revolution.
Zhu Zhu Pet Adventures (CBS, 2010) The Zhu Zhu Pets live in a colorful town that looks like it was made by Rollie Pollie Ollie. They have fun adventures, and teach lessons along the way.
Squinkies! (ABC, 2011) The Squinkies like to do stuff girls like to do, like shopping at the mall and makeup! What troubles will they cause? Watch Squinkies! to find out!
Popples Popp (CBS, 2007) A young girl named Shiro just wants to be cool like the other students in her school, but can't find a way. Then, one day, she finds 4 Popples. Using their magic powers, Shiro's life is going to be more amazing than she had ever dreamed about. Imported from Japan.
Sparkling Idol Power! (CBS, 2007) Starla is your average 13-year-old girl, who loves fashion, daydreaming about boys, and eating! One day, Starla finds a turtle in a tree, who belongs to a boy named Lerato, whom she decides is the boy of her dreams! In order to become close to Lerato, Starla must become a pop idol herself! Ah yes...the Zhu Zhu Pet Show (CBS, 2010). It actually gathered a cult following of college kids because a bunch of Cartoon Network veterans were on the staff and it was surprisingly entertaining. Too bad it only lasted one season and there'll never be a DVD release.
Here's one you don't remember, because it never aired:
Paris Hilton's House of Style (NBC, 2005) Two months before this was supposed to debut in the fall season, parental groups got up in arms over what they saw as the portrayal of Paris Hilton as a positive children's role model. They came to this conclusion without seeing a single episode, but there was no quieting them down. Fox News also caught wind of it and blasted the idea to pieces. Paris appeared in comic book print ads for the NBC Saturday line-up, but on the morning her show was to debut, Will and Grace Babies aired for an hour instead. The show was never fully revealed, but those who worked on it have confessed behind-the-scenes details in blogs. Storyboard artist Aron J. Shay said there wasn't really anything immoral about it, but there wasn't anything good about it either.

Well, I really don't have much thought about some potential saturday morning shows, it is obviously clear that both Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon (and even Disney) have taken over the cartoon scene.
But if there is one show I can make up here, how about this:
Mean Girls: The Animated Series (2004, ABC): An animated series continuation of the hit film of the same name, although Cady and The Plastics appear completely barrel chested in this version.

The Action Pack (2007)
"Jason Statham, Vin Diesel and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson team up to protect the streets of Blockbuster city from the forces of evil. They team up with three of Blockbuster City's kids, Johnny the cool kid, Shana the girl who is also black, and Dave the wheelchair bound smart kid as well as Dave’s pet cat Whiskers. They must fight evil like the rogue general Kaos Destruction, the Crime lord Fingers Elsewise, corrupt movie director Bayson Bouwer, and others. Oh and in the second season there is a special episode where Johnny gets hooked on drugs because of some of his “cool” friends, and one of them dies (That is also the only episode where someone dies drugs kill but explosions and laser guns don't). There is also an episode where the Pack meet up with the first Action Pack consisting of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Jackie Chan."

Animated, an Inception series would kick butt--just look at Paprika which is really similar to the movie (wasn't Inception inspired by it a little? Or is that just fan talk?) that is, if the animation was top notch, maybe something like Avatar.

How about Saved by the Bell: the animated series?
NBC decided instead of doing a new season of SBTB with a all-new cast (which gived us "the New Class") goes with a spin-off animated series allowing for more wacky adventures (almost a la Bill & Ted's excellent adventures) for Mr. Belding and Screech. The Buzz Lightyear cartoon came out in 2000, so they clearly had two choices and went with Buzz's show.

And lest we not forget Modern Family Mysteries (ABC, 2011) where your favorite eccentric families solve mysteries and fight crime. Of course they had to make some changes like make Mitch and Cam cousins and make Gloria and Manny Jay's neighbors.

I think they said in the movie somewhere the show was old.
More shows:
Little Stewie (2007, Fox Kids)- Stewie Griffin goes on wacky preschool adventures.
Mulan: The Series (2000, Disney's One Saturday Morning)-The TV show based on Mulan.
Stardust Witch Meruru (2012, CBS Kidshow)- A girl named Meruru Akaboshi has to defeat Demon Star Beings.
Rebecca Black: The Series (2012, NBC)-Every Friday, Rebecca Black visits a different part of America.

Been there, done that. I remember when it was only three networks and Saturday morning was all you got, except for some local after-school programming on weekdays. What you got was pretty much what you get now, some good, some bad, some ugly.

Dancing with Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Cartoon Superstars: Join us every Saturday morning to watch all your favorite Hanna-Barbera characters compete for something or other in some sort of dance competition where they mostly just stand around to be judged by criteria that no one comprehends. But look out for that Dick Dastardly and Muttley always trying to pull one of their crazy schemes.
I would watch this for Hanna-Barbera alone. Wish they still made cartoons.

Same here, but guess what, before the turn of the century, Hanna-Barbera merged with Warner Bros. Animation, so I think we owe it to H-B by tuning in to WB's cartoons.

I know, just wish Warner would do more with the H-B properties, although they seem to be doing so now.

Springfield Elementary (FOX 1993). Spinoff of "The Simpsons" that dealt with the lesser seen children of Springfield Elementary like Lewis and Janey. High hopes for the series were dashed when it was revealed that not only did none of the head writers actually watch the simpsons, but they were determined to "out grossout ren and stimpy". Notable for using a different voice actor for Ralph Wiggum.

The All New Muppet Show (2011, ABC) The Muppets are back by popular demand! This modern version of the Muppet Show will sure please kids!
Inception: The Series (Fox Kids, 2011) The original team, now animated and working for the police, uses their mind-diving gear (which looks very different from the movie) to explore criminals' brains and reveal their secrets. They must navigate their chaotic dreamworlds, where anything can happen, while preventing being trapped themselves.
I want both of these. Especially the Muppets, since that one might actually happen. Another one that I always wanted...
The Incredibles: The Animated Series (ABC, 2005) Animated like the end credits of the movie, the Incredibles fight the criminals of Metroville! Only original cast members that come back are the kids and Samuel L. Jackson, who wanted to say he was in a Saturday morning cartoon. Genndy Tartakovsky headed the effort, deeming Pixar a safer bet than George Lucas for his next cartoon.
And one that fits in more with the ones here...
Doggie Do! (2010, NBC) Based on the insanely popular Doggie Do! game, this follows Doggie, a dog trying to live a normal life when suddenly, his "do" starts speaking to him! They get in wacky adventures when the Do often ruins Doggie's dreams! Famous for the crossover with Scooby-Doo switching places with the Do.

It didn't have the endorsement of the proper writing staff either, especially Matt Groening who asked that his name be disassociated with it. The regular show made fun of it several times, and several times after it was gone.
Boy, I'm glad that never actually happened. The Simpsons staff has a good hands-off relationship with Fox.

I admit this idea is based on an idea I read online around the time Star Wars Episode One was released, but what if....
Jar Jar's Podracing All-Stars (Fox, 2000) That clumsy Gungan is at it again, this time becoming a podracer, hoping to become the galaxy's champion. With Watto as his money-hungry manager, will he succeed?

How about thses ideas:
The Adventures of Indiana Jones(CBS)- Indy, along with his father, Prof. Henry Jones Sr., plunge into new archaeological adventures, taking them to anywhere in the world and dealing with a few baddies on the way, as well.
The Spike & Tyke Show(NBC)- Spun off from the Tom & Jerry cartoons, Spike, the bulldog and his son, Tyke, the pup, go through everyday father and son situations, such as cats showing up uninvited to their family barbecue/picnic, slick characters attempting to take advantage of Tyke by dishonest means, only to deal with Spike or any father and son get togethers, only to deal with that conniving wolf. Barney Bear also featured in new cartoons of his own.
The Beary Family(NBC)- Charlie Beary, his wife, Bessie and son, Charlie Jr. in all-new comedic family situations. A spinoff from the Woody Woodpecker cartoons.
Bad News Pete(ABC)- Disney's legendary canine villain, Pete, up to some of his old tricks, but failing at every turn with comedic results. He even teams up with the Beagle Boys for some of his plots, but still meets with failure. Kind of in the same vein as Warner Bros. Dastardly & Muttley or Pinky & the Brain. The kind of show, where the bad guy gets laughed at for not succeeding. BTW, there will be a few side gags to keep the laughs going.
This is all I can think of, for now, but I'll come up with more, later.

Jak and Daxter (FOX, 2004-2010) (TV-PG-LV): Watch Jak and Daxter's adventures throughout Haven City, trying to take down the Crimson Guards.
Sly: Thieves' Tale (FOX, 2005-2009, 2011-current) (TV-PG): Help Sly and his friends take down the thieves that stole the parts to an ancient artifact that will lead to destruction.

The game's name is Doggie Doo, no Doggie Do.
Here are some more shows:
Pop The Pig (2009, NBC) The misadventures of a pig who works at a restaurant and can't stop sneaking the food!
Lady Lovelylocks 2 (2012, FOX) A remake of the classic 80's series.
Adventures In Babysitting: The Series (1990, Syndicated) This series details what happened after the movie to the cast.
Lilpri (2012, CBS) 3 young girls portray the roles of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty in order to save Fairyland from trouble.
The Adventures of Remy (2007, ABC) This animated series is the prequel of the movie Ratatouille, and talks about the life of the rats before they escaped their world to the human world.
Twin Princesses Of Wonder Planet (2011, Kids WB!) Twin sisters Fine and Rein use their powers to save Mysterious Star. This show gains the same popularity as Sailor Moon did in America and merchandise of the show can be seen in every store in America.

Fun thread. I just watched the Community animated shorts (http://www.nbc.com/community/video/abeds-master-key-part-1/1389340/), which would probably give us a glimpse into that show as a SatAM toon. Oh, and I include the flash animation with it too, since you just know most would be animated like that nowadays.
That said, most of this stuff exists in some form. Nickelodeon has and currently still is hosting animated series based on hit films, but I guess you just can't beat the ubiquitous cheapness of Saturday morning.
Here's some shows:
Seth MacFarlane presents New York Kid (FOX, 2010): the Family Guy hitmaker takes on yet another family, except the focus is on the precocious Marty Henderson who lives with his crazy family in Samsquatch, NY, including his dad, fat bumbling Thomas; his mom, the curvy Veronica; his sister Amy who rarely appears; the family pet weasel Larry who just gets Marty into all sorts of trouble and the talking venus fly trap Audrey III in the windowsill who we assure is not just a one-note Little Shop reference! Plenty of cutaways are abound that explores relatable issues in a kids' life, and pop culture references to match today's middle schooler lingo!
Up (ABC, 2011): Carl has his trademark flying balloon house back!... somehow... and he's taking Russell and Dug along with them as they get into all sorts of CRAZY international adventures, such as fighter Russian czars, preventing crimes at the Louvre and sprinting from wild lions on a safari! (NOTE: most of these descriptions only occur in the opening credits, actual show is less exciting and more educational)
The New Adventures of Cars (ABC, 2009): Join Lightning McQueen, Mater and the gang as they live life in Radiator Springs... next to the awesome new racetrack that Lightning built which attracts goofy characters to zoom in and out of their normally sedate lives! An upcoming episode features a crossover from the gang of "Up"! No, we're not aware the world is supposed to be entirely made up of vehicles!
Seal Team 6 (ABC, 2012): Rushed into production after Disney claimed the rights, we follow the elite military snipers kicking butt without any of the nasty killing they actually are trained to do!
How I Met Your Mother: The Middle School Years (CBS, 2010): banking on the success of the hit series, Ted Mosby dials back the story to his kids' annoyance all the way to his middle school years, where young Ted is not only inexplicably friends with Marshall, Lily, Barney and Robin ages before he met them, but it's animated, too! Filled with sappy messages on abstinence, drug use and bullying before they become adults and commit this all freely. NPH hosts live-action segments bookending the program showing off magic tricks.
I think I'm good. Also, the "Napoleon Dynamite" series that just recently aired on Fox? Tone down some of the raunchier humor and it would fit in snuggly if SatAM toon blocks still existed.

The All New Muppet Show (2011, ABC) The Muppets are back by popular demand! This modern version of the Muppet Show will sure please kids!
The original Muppet show wasn't made for kids.
It was a syndicated show that aired in the 7:30-8pm slot.
Who would they get to guest star in an early Saturday morning show?
Even Muppets Tonight aired in primetime.

Ronald Rocket (Syndication, 1986-2001 and 2001-present) This show is about the adventures of 5 children who are able to go to outer space thanks to the help of Ronald Rocket and his pals. Like Chibi Maruko Chan, it has 2 series, the one broadcast in 1986-2001, and the one broadcast 2001-present. It even got movies!
Wacky Delly (NBC, 1997-present) This shows us the everyday adventures of talking deli meats such as Betty Baloney and Mr. Cheese. Mr. Cheese is often liked, and he has a running gag of saying that he is the best character on the show. It got 3 movies during its run, and the fourth, "Mr. Cheese's Titanic Adventure", is coming April 2012.

Probably in the early 2000's. I am going to say that Mucha Lucha and Xiolin Showdown were the last ones that really mattered.
