I don't know if this is true or not(good chance that it is), but apparently after screening the movie Fox deemed it too violent and pulled director Xavier Gens off the project and replaced him with Nicholas De Toth. Who's that you ask? The guy who edited Live Free Or Die Hard to be PG-13.
If this is true this is gonna make me hate Fox even more than I do already. They did this with X3 and Daredevil.
Honestly I do not get this one bit. What kind of logic is that? Hey Fox..read the title. HITMAN. Go on...sound it out.....HIIIIIITMAAAAAAN. Why wouldn't you expect it to be bloody and violent?

One less movie to see at the theater, one more movie to slide into the Netflix queue.
You'd think these studios would be worried that eventually people would smarten up and just not see the movie at the show since everything has an 'UNCUT!' version floating around now.

Here is something from IGN (http://movies.ign.com/articles/826/826204p1.html)...
TwitchFilm's source informed the site that De Toth, who re-cut Live Free or Die Hard to earn a PG-13 rating, ix expected to deliver a "bloodless version of the film assembled with no input whatsoever from Gens."
Studio sources confirmed that De Toth has been hired as an editor, but not "controlling the project" as TwitchFilms stated. We were informed, "Director Xavier Gens is still working on the film. The film still has intense action and will definitely be rated 'R.'" Our source strongly denied that Fox is softening the final cut and called the original report untrue. They emphasized that it will still be a true "R" and a not a "bloodless version".

Wow and I was looking forward to seeing this movie because the trailer looked good. Oh well as long as it stays as rated R, I will most likely still watch it.

X-men the last stand was rated R?
No. Both X3 and Daredevil had significant amounts of material cut out for the theatrical release, later restored as deleted scenes on the DVD and in Daredevil's case, a separate Director's Cut release that restored an entire storyline that ended up on the cutting room floor. I believe that the original poster is suggesting that the best-case scenario with this film is a similar release/pair of releases.
The idiocy here just boggled the mind.
You're missing the "t" in your first Criterion.

IGN's version makes more sense -- they can't get a new director after the film has already been shot and trailers are airing.
