The link now says that Alex Ross is involved in the project. I wonder if he is contributing to the Spider-Maa "Brand New Day" event. I'm really interested to see what this project is.

Alex Ross is on tap to do a Captain America mini, so they may just be announcing the specifics of that (release date and stuff).

maybe he's coming back to do the art for the marvels sequel.

Actually, he's working on the Avengers/Invaders miniseries to be released next year, but that's not why Marvel wanted you to "Save the Date!". There will be a new Captain America revealed in Captain America # 34, releasing in January. Alex Ross designed the new Captain America uniform, and I have to admit, I like it. It's got something new for Captain America, and it also pays respect to his past by bringing the design of his old shield into the uniform.

Here's the link to the story on Newsarama:

Enjoy.:D

Captain America with a gun and knife??? Must be Winter Soldier under the mask. And why is his costume so shiny?

He's got the gun and knife because America stands for truth, justice, and huddled masses yearning to breathe free, but it also needs to stand for increased lethality these days, too :D.

Actually, the gun is plausible ("Rubber bullets. Honest.") and there's lots of things you can do with a knife other than stabbing people with it. The one that kind of puzzles me is the canteen. Since when was a lack of water ever something that Cap was deeply concerned about? Did he die the last time around because of improper hydration or something? Or is it holy water just in case he's attacked by vampires? In that case, then maybe the gun is full of silver bullets.

This is all predicated on Cap not suddenly going lethal on us, of course. If he is, well, it's not like I'm reading the book anyway. I still think it's kind of a goofy idea to make Bucky the one who did the military dirty work, though that ship seems to have sailed.

And the gnashing of teeth over what his death (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=185326)"meant" (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=185326) that he was killed all seems even more of a reflection over what people wanted it to mean rather than any kind of political statement from Marvel. I think I may owe wonderfly 3 comics from my Drawer Boxes, though, since he was the only one who took me up on my bet that Cap would be back in 6 months (http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=2450729&postcount=5). Turned out to be 7 for the announcement and 10 for the actual return, so I was kind of close.

I'm mixed on the design personally. I'm not sure if I like how shiney the whole suit is. But that's really my only complain. I think the design is striking especially how Ross used the old sheild as an actual basis for the costume itself. Now it seems too obvious that it'll be Bucky under the mask and Brubaker once mentioned he set Bucky to take over the mask years back. The gun and knife is an interesting addition but it reminds of the 1990s when nearly every character was made grim and gritty.

But hey at least this new design is better than that horrible Cap-Armor from the 90s.

I like the design quite a lot, although I'm very disappointed they are bringing back Captain America but not Steve Rogers. Well, worried may be a better term. I'm worried they intend to redefine Cap to the point where its not really Cap anymore. Talk of updating heroes gets me anxious, especially when I think back on that horrific Civil War frontline issue where Cap is said to be too out of date and out of touch to be relevant to today's NASCAR-loving, myspace-using public.

So actually, I'm not sure I agree with Ed Liu about the lack of a statement. I think it remains to be seen. If the end result of the new Cap is to basically say yes to that and to give us a supposedly hip, "current" Cap for the sake of being current, something pretty significant is lost I think. In a way, it is already lost: part of what made Cap great was his status, his war history, his demonstrated leadership. Its easier to write for a blank slate, but these qualities unique to Cap can't be recaptured. I don't see how they can get that back, even if Bucky ends up as the new Cap.

All that said, this is comics and this return of Captain America doesn't necessarily preclude the return of Steve Rogers someday. Just not anytime soon, apparently. In the meantime, I'm going to get that Cap collection. And in spite of my worries I am interested in what will happen.

One thing that does really bug me: the gun. Why? It feels like a gimmick. Okay, so Captain America carries a gun now. I'm not any more or less interested because he has it. What is the point?

As Tim stated in the newest issue of Robin: "He's Not Dead Until You See The Body. And Sometimes Not Even Then."

Steve's coming back. I think we all know that. So whomever is in the new Cap costume, he's basically just going to become U.S.Agent 2 when Steve comes back.

That said, it looks to be a fun ride until then. I like the new design. Not as good as Ultimates Cap, but still pretty good.

Looks like a really cool modern design. Hopefully it is Winter Soldier since no one else has really been developed to take the role. Hopefully though Cap won't become like Batman and be dark and brooding now though.

Ed Brubaker and Alex Ross have been making the rounds about the new costume. Here they are at Newsarama (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=132706) and again at Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=12102).

Notable (to me, anyway) are the statements at CBR that there isn't meant to be any symbolism to the gun or the knife, and the canteen may not make it to the final in-book design.

This is the first I've seen of it.

Lordy, they went Ben Reilly on the costume. :p
