To help tide us over until the new motion picture is released I thought we could discuss one of the best things about Star Trek: music.
Personally, while I love TOS's theme I think I'm going to give this one to Voyager. Such a great theme, it's hard to describe.

TNG, for using the Moition picture theme. Any other op after that has been mediorce by comparison.

TNG, hands down. It's just so heroic and rousing, and immediately gets you in the mood for some phaser action.

I find Enterprise to have the best opening ST theme in that you get the sense of human achievement in exploring from the first sailboat on the sea to the Enterprise going into warp.
It gives a sense of ah and wonder that sets the tone for the series.

The themes for ST are, overall, very fitting for their respective shows. TNG and Voyager both had excellent instrumentals. In the end, though, I voted for Enterprise. The music is great, but so are the lyrics. Plus, it actually has two versions, which, I believe, are distinguished by a more hard/electric sound for the latter half of the series. Plus, the Rod Stewart original isn't bad either. TNG's theme is definitely the runner-up though.

Guess I'm going to be the odd man out and say Deep Space Nine. Its theme had that great Wagnerian epic feel that served the heavy duty war story that followed well.

I'll also say DS9.
Specifically the more uptempo version from season 4 onward.

I'm with you dude. It's probably my favourite instrumental theme for any television series, narrowly beating out Thomas Newman's theme for Six Feet Under and Darling Violetta's theme for Angel. (And, hey, it looks like quite a few agree with us!)
As for TNG, I was never really fond of Dennis McCarthy's shrill arrangement of Goldsmith's music. Plus it needed a bigger orchestra for additional oomph.

I've never been a fan of DS9's opening theme because of how plain it sounded to me. To each his own, I suppose.

Yep. I'll join you guys in naming DS9's the best. I kind of missed having a voice-over, like TOS and TNG, but in the end, I'm not sure it was really needed. The music was just so good.
Second, I'd name Voyager's.

It's a really hard choice for me. TMP's Trek theme is superior to TNG's version, but it still hits all the right notes. Pun intended.
Then again, Voyager's theme is SO DAMN GOOD. That's the best part of the whole show! What a theme. It deserved that Emmy.
I guess I'm gonna have to say Voyager, by a slim margin. (Or, as Riker would say, a "pretty big margin." Twenty-four Starfleet credits to the first one to guess why.)

It gives a sense of ah and wonder that sets the tone for the series. :cool:That is indeed a fine visual opening, but the thread is technically referring exclusively to the song. Which isn't that good. I actually preferred the first version over the second. Still, the lyrics are truly the heart and soul of Star Trek. I doubt they could have written a better lyrical tune for a Trek series, though most of us probably wish they hadn't even tried.
I'll also say DS9.
Specifically the more uptempo version from season 4 onward.I'm the total opposite. The original DS9 theme may have been slow, but its somber tone reflected the loneliness of being at the edge of the frontier (though it quickly turned out to be anything but lonely) and the darker mood of the series. I never got used to that up-tempo underbeat they laid down starting with season four. It's too repetitive. Actually, if they had just made the original instrumentation as fast as the new version without any extra beats, I'd probably like that better than either of the current versions.

It's been a long road...gettin' from there to here....It's been a long time...but my time is finally near...
Awesome.

Exactly. It's a shame they had to waste Jerry Goldsmith on the worst Star Trek (and Star Trek V, which he also scored, wasn't exactly a shining moment for the franchise either), but this is clearly the best theme in my mind. It's amazing.

The official reason for the change was that, as you mentioned, it turned out not to be very lonely. By season 4 the station was a hotbed of activity, and they felt the need for something that sounded more lively. Whether or not they succeeded is up to you.

Personally, I like the song to the opening of Enterprise over the other ST opening theme music. The song just feels like it has most personality then the other ST opening theme music.

TNG, just awesome.

Agreed about the Enterprise song. They could have easily just slapped a current popular song on it or something, but I like the fact they actually used a song that the lyrics represent everything about Star Trek (amazing that the song wasn't even written for the show, too), particularly the era in which this particular show took place.
That said, TNG is still my favorite theme, though Enterprise is a close second. Despite being a Goldsmith fan, Voyager's took awhile to grow on me, but I've since grown to like it. TOS and DS9 round out the five.

The problem with TNG is IT WAS NOT WRITTEN FOR THE TV SERIES! Its a movie theme and therefore doesn't count
