When I first heard that Smallville was going to have Lex Luther in the show. I was a little hesitant. I thought it's not going to work. But, it has.
One thing I have noticed in regard to Lex's relationship with Clark in Smallville. Lex has always been flirting with his dark half. We have been hearing stories and tidbits from various episodes about it. And we see it in how he reacts to his business dealings. I think Lex is attracted to Clark for the reason that Clark is what Lex would like to have been. Someone with a loving family and who sticks to his morals, even when they cause pain. Almost, like he knows he is going bad and by being friends with and helping Clark, he can somehow retain some good in him. It sounds cliqued and I think has been mentioned on the forum before. But, it seems Lex is fighting to stay away from the Dark Side.
ps- In the comics Lex hates both Clark and Superman. Especially now that he knows they are the same person. I think that the comics should have taken the following approach if they could redo history and base it after Smallville. Think of the story dynamics. Lex could be Clark Kents best friend. Yet, he hates Superman. Can you imagine Clark's dilemma of trying to be his best friend and enemy at the same time. Just a thought.
