Great news for English speaking fans of this classic! It's such a kick butt show that deserves some recognition.

If you forget the fact that EVERYBODY seems to speak the same language it's a masterpiece of storytelling!

I already got MY set :D hehehehe. It included a mini-CD that had a modern interpretation of the theme song by a popular group.

I'm not sure, I've only ever seen the opening credits in French and the English version of the song was pretty close.

Actually, it was uncut in the sense it was uncut from the French version. The show has actual two seperate cuts produced. One in France, and one in Japan. Both versions are missing footage from each other.

This better show up on our shores....I love this rare show and I paid a guy fifty bucks for a set taped off Nickelodeon in 1989.

Well, the documentary segments were in the original japanese airing, but were removed for the DVD and future reairings. But that's besides the point.

I made an edit list to show the differences between the French and Japanese version, which you can read under the spoiler:

(PS. French Cut refers to footage removed/not present in the french version, and Japanese cut refers to footage removed/not present in the Japanese version)


Big Notice: The French and Japanese background music are different. The main thing you must keep in mind is that japanese background music is NOT the original music here. The french music was originally composed for the show, and got replaced for unknown reasons However, the opening and ending music are originally japanese. The dub theme was composed later after the japanese op/ed songs were produced.

French Cut #1 - Opening is cut down from 2 Minutes, 12 seconds to 1 minute and 56 seconds.

Change # 1 - Opening song, Boukensha-tachi, is changed to a different song in the French/English versions.

French Cut #2 - Roughly the first 28 Seconds are cut. The scene originally opened up with a ship going across a deadly storm, with the narrator telling the audiance about Spain and the legends.

Side Note:Some of the dialog above is moved into the first scene shown in the French version.

Small Note #2: Episode Title is missing on the english version. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not.

Japanese Cut #1 - The first 4 seconds of Esteban running through the town road is cut.

French Cut #3 - After Esteban gets up falling, a whole entire scene of Esteban running through another part of town has been removed. About 7 seconds are lost here.

Japanese Cut #2 - A pan shot of the buildings is removed. About 4 seconds or so is lost.

Japanese Cut #3 - Ok, this is a big one. Esteban watches Pedoro and Sancho continue to try and convince the people to believe that there is a city of gold, and the people continue to disbelieve these guys. 35 Seconds were removed in total.

Slight Note: 2 Seconds are added in the japanese version here. Esteban looks around the room when the door to the bar is open. This shot was originally used when Esteban was examining the people here.

French Cut #4 - People looking towards the door as the mentor walks is cut. There's no reason for this shot as it was used in a previous scene, and would have been a repeat frame. 1.5 seconds are lost here.

French Cut #5 - Esteban leans in a bit further a bit worried after the Mentor asks where Esteban is, is cut. 1.5 seconds are lost.

Japanese Cut #4 - The scene where people discuss about finding Esteban after the Mentor tells them he's needed for the festivle is cut. 3 or so seconds is lost.

French Cut #6 - Seems the French version cuts Esteban listening to the people squacking here. 3-4 seconds are lost. Though this causes the scene above to resync up.

Japanese Cut #7 - 2 Seconds are cut as the Mentor tells them they'll recieve gold.

French Cut #7 - The french version removes Esteban running back to hide in the barrels. 2 Seconds are lost. Again, the scene resyncs up.

PAint Edit?: I'm not sure. I might just be my copy. The wine bottle color is changed from pink to orange. I'm not sure if this is an actual edit, as my copy is horribly discolored. It's more then likely an edit, but until I get a better copy, I'll just leave it at that.

Japanese Cut #8 - 4 Seconds are cut of the Captain holding the baby Esteban.

French Cut #8 - Mendoza waits a bit less in the french version. 3-4 seconds are lost here.

French Cut #9 - Actually, this is the first cut that makes sense in the entire freaking episode. Due to a mistake, in the japanese version, after Esteban arrives to Mendoza, he is panting. When he looks up to Mendoza, there is a close up shot of him, with a perfectly normal face. This was cut from the french version, most likely due to the error. 3-4 seconds are removed.

French Cut #10 - 7 seconds cut of a close up of Zia gagged and a close up of Esteban freaked out is removed. This has to do with what happens with the japanese version however.

Japanese cut #9 - ...In all honesty. I'm glad this was cut, as it makes the scene flow better. Regardless, the japanese version cuts out a close up shot of Mendoza outside of the ship looking at the screen, then walking away, as well as the outside shot of the ship, then a shot of Zia and Esteban crawling over to the window in the ship and looking out the window, showing the clouds forming a dragon, forshadowing a future event. 50 seconds overall is lost.

French Cut #11 - Ending is shortened from 1 minute and 29 seconds to 1 minute and 15 seconds.
