View Full Version : Purpose of Waluigi

To my knowledge, he hasn't appeared in any of the Mario proper games, or even in WarioWare or the Mario RPGs or anything which might give him some sort of character. Mostly he seems to just be filling up spots in sports games and Mario Party. What's his deal? Has he/is he ever doing anything, or is he the Lola Bunny of Nintendo characters?

He exists to be to Luigi what Wario is to Mario; an antagonist doppelganger. Simple as that.

True, but has he been in anything other than sports games and Mario Party?

I think his sole purpose is to be a character for party and sports games and that's it. I don't think he ever appeared in any other games, in neither the Mario or Wario series.

IIRC, the only apperance he's had outside of sports and party games is that costume Mario can get in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Wikipedia once stated that Nintendo was planning to make a Super Wario Brothers game starring Waluigi and Wario, but we all know what a reliable information source Wikipedia is.

And how long did it state this? I'm sure it was only up for a few hours possibly even minutes before it was reverted as vandalism.

Pretty much. The main article on Waluigi isn't even there anymore. He's currently just listed as one of many on the list of Mario series characters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waluigi#Waluigi).

Yeah that was unfortunately because of that administrator called TNN. He also got the articles for Toad, Daisy, Bob-omb, & tons of others redirected as well. He even tried to get Koopa Troopa & Goomba to lose their articles!

Waluigi is the most picked on of Mario's charatcers. Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Peach all have their own games. Bowser's the final boss in most adventure games, and Daisy was the damsel in distress once. Waluigi really is nothing more than a filler character for sport and party games. Maybe he should get his own line of micro games in the next WarioWare.

Waluigi's in Dance Dance Revolution, stealing Music Keys...

It's true, he doesn't really serve any real purpose outside the spin-off games, which I think is disappointing because I really like his design, despite the fact that he's basically just a skinnier version of Wario with a different outfit. He just looks like a character that you'd want to see appear more often, but sadly, he doesn't.

If Nintendo ever does make another game where Luigi's the main protagonist, it'd be neat to see Waluigi as the villian. Since they're expected to be rivals, the least they could do is interact outside the sports games. I'd at least like him to appear in the Wario series; even an appearance in WarioWare would be great.

Yeah, despite Waluigi's lame origins, he seems to show potential as a distict character and should be more showcased as a villian toward Luigi or partner to Wario.

Did Waluigi first appear in Mario Golf or Mario Tennis or a Mario Party game? I really can't remember...

And if I recall the website back then it stated that Waluigi was Wario's brother but he was too cowardly to go out and do stuff like Wario :p hence why he only shows up in 'safe' Sports game XD

You know what would be great? Luigi & Waluigi working together in a game to save that kingdom Luigi mentions in the 'Thousand Year Door'! No Mario or Wario to save, just the two off them in their own adventures :p

I'm almost certain the only reason Waluigi was created was so Wario would have a doubles partner in Mario Tennis.

Yeah it's the same reason why they brought back Birdo (yeah she was in Super Mario RPG but she wasn't constantly appearing in the Mario spin offs until Mario Tennis) & Daisy. They were of course partners for Yoshi & Peach respectively.

I honestly kind of like Waluigi myself. Whenever I play any of the plump plumber's games, he's always my first choice, but looking at it, you're right, he doesn't really serve a purpose. At least not now.

"Wuigi" doesn't really roll of the tongue quite as well. I do agree that "Waluigi" is kind of a lazy name, though. "Hey, let's just take Luigi's name and put a "Wa-" in front of it. Instant rival!"

Personally, I always thought his name would sound better if it was "Warigi," but whether or not that's an improvement is up to you.

Actually, the word "waru" in Japanese means "bad person." Wario is Mario + Bad Person. The Waluigi pun works even better - Luigi, in Japanese, can be pronounced as Ruigi. So it's Waru-Ruigi. Waruigi. Waluigi.

Anyway, this is the reason why we need a proper new SMB cartoon series. if anything, we could make him a character there. Otherwise, he's just Luigi's evil twin clone whatever. He's a cool character design (though a bit too much like a character from Time Bokan http://www.tuttocartoni.com/concorsi/disegno/d2006/disegni/handesigner/Boyakky%20-%20yattaman%20-%20TIME%20BOKAN_small.JPG)

I know I'm not the 1st person to make this comparison, but I've always thought that Waluigi bore a distinct resemblance to the Hanna Barbera character, Dick Dastardly.

Waluigi is a favorite of mine for spinoffs, but I have no idea why. Maybe it's because he doesn't appear anywhere else, and he's so darn wacky!

You haven't noticed how ever since Mario Tennis, the main Birdo has been female (with a female VA) & Nintendo has ignored the fact it used to be male? Like in Super Mario Advance it has the female VA.

yeah, back in the day when super mario bros 2 came out on the NES, nintendo hinted in the instruction manual that birdo was a crossdresser. nintendo probably decided to just make birdo a female now, though, due to PR reasons

though, it'd make sense if birdo was a he that looked like a she because yoshi is a she who acts like a he. i say yoshi is a she because it lays eggs. what male anything lays eggs?

Yoshis do apparently.

The way I see it, the male Yoshi lays eggs but they are not fertile and only females can lay eggs that hatch into baby Yoshis.

Or maybe we're all looking too much into it.

Or maybe the female Yoshis lay the eggs, but the male then stores them in a special pouch until they're ready to hatch, sort of like seahorses.

...Nah, I think the "reading too much into it" thing is probably the way to go on this one. (-:

Most likely PR & so they can have Birdo as Yoshi's girlfriend (they made renders of Birdo looking at Yoshi with hearts above it's head from what I recall).

Yoshi's a boy? "He" certainly has eggs to spare. Even if "he" was a seahorse-type being, I assume seahorse dads only carry fertilized eggs, in which case Yoshi would be killing an awful lot of potential young, which doesn't really seem in-character.

Eh, the whole deal with that species is extremely crazy anyway.

Maybe Yoshi's pro-choice and those are all first-trimester eggs.

jonny139's explanation was mostly correct...however, the word for bad is warui, not waru. Therefore, warui + ruigi (the way the character's name is written in Japanese) = Waluigi.

Naming the character "Warigi" would ruin the pun.

I should have been more specific. I meant, why not call him that in the US, as they changed some of the names around anyway?

Or maybe Yoshis are hermaphrodites that reproduce by cloning, thus explaining the lack of genetic diversity beyond skin color in the specie. The gender thing is only a preference due to their personality. A Yoshi chooses to be a 'girly' or 'boyish' Yoshi.

Or maybe the 'eggs' are not real eggs used for reproduction at all but a natural defense mechanism.

Maybe Yoshi needs to eat something specific to make a baby Yoshi egg. In Super Mario world, eating berries would make an egg with an item in it. In other games, eating certain enemies would make different egg variations.

Well maybe both gender can 'process' stuff they eat and get rid of them in Egg form, but only the females can process genetic material and make babies out of them? Or, following the hermaphrodite theory, they just need to wish it to produce reproduction eggs.

As for Birdo maybe it doesn't produce real eggs by the mouth, only secrete a hard substance similar to egg shell to use as a defense mechanism.

It's probably some defense mechanism for hiding Real Yoshi Eggs from creatures who might eat them... Think about this, for most creatures, what is normally created after a creature digests something?

That's a good defense mechanism :p off course it would still need a hard shell to look the part and hide the smell.
